Earwigs are equipped with some pretty imposing pincers on their rear, and they're not afraid to use them. But when it comes to these appendages, size isn't everything.

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
Many animals seem to show a preference for symmetry in a potential mate. It can be a clue that the mate has the genes necessary to develop properly and thrive in an environment full of stresses and dangers.
But in some critters buck the trend. Like the earwig, a diminutive insect found on every continent except Antarctica.
Andrew ZInk, an associate professor of biology at San Francisco State University, has been looking at how symmetry affects earwigs success when it comes to social interactions.
He’s studying maritime earwigs, a larger and more powerful cousin to the common European earwig you might find in your backyard. Both creatures bear fearsome looking pincers on their backsides. And they aren’t afraid to use them to defend themselves. Zink knows all about that.
--- Do earwigs climb into your ear?
The quick answer is no. Earwigs are not interested in climbing into your ear to lay their eggs or otherwise. They’re no more likely than any other bug to accidentally find its way into you ear. The name earwig come from the old english words for ear and insect. It may have been named after the shape of the common European earwig’s wings, which when extended resemble a human ear.
--- Do earwigs pinch people?
Earwigs will use their pincers to defend themselves, but the pinch is typically not strong enough to be considered dangerous.
--- Do earwigs fly?
Male common European earwigs have wings and can fly to disperse and find mates. Females do not have wings or fly. Neither male nor female maritime earwigs have wings or fly.
--- What do earwigs eat?
Most earwigs are scavengers and omnivores. In addition to scavenging and eating plants, the common European earwigs also hunts small prey like aphids. Maritime earwigs are carnivorous hunting smaller arthropods like sand hoppers.

Looks like there are lots of questions about how exactly male earwigs with more asymmetric pincers to their advantage during fights.According to Muñoz and Zink, earwigs slide the straighter side under their opponent and then bring down the the tip of their more curved side onto the top of their opponent’s abdomen. So instead of just grabbing their opponent, they are now poking them with the point of that curved side. Sometimes they apply enough pressure to actually penetrate their opponent’s abdomen, which is usually a fatal injury. There are illustrations in the scientific article. www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Asymmetric-forceps-increase-fighting-success-among-Munoz-Zink/8d04ce84806b1e4da666fdbc0256c425235c92c1/figure/2

A few years ago, we started getting earwigs in our house. My wife was freaking out until I explained to her that they don't actually go in your ears. A few weeks went by, and I woke up around 2AM one morning with a sharp pain in my ear. I started panicking as I could hear something moving around. Ten minutes later, after nearly ripping my ear off, I finally felt it and pulled it out. Sure enough it was a big ole' earwig. I had to go to the doctor the next morning and get ear drops. He said my eardrum was bleeding from it cutting me up with its pincers. Earwigs are no more likely to go in your ear than any other bug, but that doesn't mean that they can't. Haha We had a pest control company come out immediately.

Another function of the pincers is they help them fold their wings! Their wings fold up like origami into tight little elytra on their upper back and they're iridescent. They don't often use them given how much time they spend underground. I've heard people call them "secret angel wings" because of how pretty they are when unfolded!

Earwigs have another genetic quirk. Here in Riverside County California, I've seen some with wings. Maybe three in the last twenty years. They aren't in the class of hymenoptera, so there's no queens. Apparently it's a recessive gene that occasionally shows up. I have observed that trait works to their evolutionary disadvantage. The ones with wings are out flying about, having fun, partying, drinking and showing off.... right where they become easy prey for birds and other predators. The preferred wingless Earwigs are hiding under rocks, out of sight from predators.

We have a huge "problem" with them where I live since we are in a valley and have springs underground which always mean moist dirt for them and as much as I hate the little things they are pretty fascinating.

One time at a park, I was curious about what was under these 2 white cylinders pipe thingies protruding in pairs of two near a tree, I decided "Hmmmm, why not lift one of the covers of one of the white cylinders up?" So I did and to my absolute horror, it was literally JAMMED packed with hundreds of earwigs and I closed the lid faster then you could get out of school for summer break! Having a huge fear of earwigs didn't help either!

Susan Kay I don’t think I know any kid/teenager, that would be watching any educational video on KZbin, when they could be watching Jake Paul. (Sad, I know. I was always into nature and animals growing up; now it seems most kids are just concerned about money & ‘dabbing on them haters.’) With KZbins algorithm though, it actually shows that videos between 8-15 minutes are most watched, and get the most out of their revenue system. That’s why if you look at pewdiepie or other bigger youtuber’s videos, they are all around that same length. I’ve actually made this comment before and pbs responded by saying that they were happy to hear how much I and others enjoyed the channel and they would try and extend future videos if possible. So that was pretty cool. 😊

I love earwigs. They used to freak me out but once I picked one up to bring outside and weirdly enough it reminded me of my guineapig. They’re very curious and timid. I had to force him onto my hand and he wasn’t excited. He never tried to bite me or hurt me in anyway he was just exploring my bracelets until I brought him outside and he walked onto a bush immediately which is a problem I have with mothes. Once I pick them up they never want to leave. I wouldn’t actively seek out to hold one again but they weren’t as scary as I thought they would be. 8/10 because I had horrible goose bumps the entire time

To be fair, most earwigs like dark, moist, confined spaces, which is a perfect description of our ear canals, so if they find themselves trapped on a bed with little in the way of good cover options, they have a tendency to mistake our ears as safe burrows to hide out in until a better option presents itself.

Thanks for the clarification. I've always been disgusted and fearful of earwigs because I never knew why they had pincers, but this put me a little more at ease. They still look like terrifying alien spawn, but I will admit they are quite interesting now that I know more about them. Thanks for sharing!

osiris122cf Spiders will bite you if they feel threatened and wasps will sting if you're close to their nests, but I still find them fascinating. Same for earwigs. I don't have to like them to think they're neat!

As a kid I liked catching them but knew little about them. As a grandfather, now I can teach my grandkids more than I knew. Interesting insects.

Earwigs eat a lot of things besides smaller insects. Peaches ripening on trees and corn silk on ripening corn are two examples. They only come out at night so birds can't feed on them. You can easily trap them with a plastic container with a few holes drilled in, a little molasses in water, a little yeast, perhaps a little liquid dish detergent.

This video was really well made. And although I know these are harmless bugs, after accidentally swallowing a few of them as a lad, I am completely disgusted by them.

If you put an earwig in your sibling's ear you can successfully scar them for life, especially it you tell them the bug burrowed into their brain and laid eggs.

When I was a kid (ten years old), sitting on my front lawn in shorts, I got bit by one of those. It held onto to my inner thigh pretty good. It hurt a lot, lol!

If the pincers are actually legs.. Does that mean they are arachnids instead of insects?
@dudev
@dudev 6 жыл бұрын
No. Arachnids are a group that share an ancestry. An evolutionary similarity doesn't mean creatures are related.

l lI ll l__ earwigs are weird. They have practically 8 legs like arachnids, use their abdomens as scorpion tails, slide and go undergound like earworms, and show exoskeletons similar to cockroaches. They are the "platypus" of insects
