Great vid. Anyone putting sub 50p seriously needs to get their costings re-done. Reinvestment, staff wages & facilities, farmers quality of life, not working an 80 hour week, paying suppliers on time, good environment for cows, slurry storage, fencing, i could go on ....

The price must start with a 5. Dairy farming is so capital hungry and the new legislation coming down the line will only add to that. Where is fair trade for uk dairy farmers?

If farmers have to comply with all the new and existing regulations then the consumer has to comply with the price to go with it. Gone are the days agricultural is going to lie down and take the ruff end anymore . You want the best in the world farmed products you can have them but it comes at a price.

I agree. We need a better price for our milk. I’m not intending to be negative but we would have to be careful that the market wasn’t flooded with milk. Farmers jumping into dairy. Then there is the concern of cheap imported milk. Probably substandard quality. There is a lot to consider. It’s not just demand a better price there are a lot of variables too. Don’t miss understand me. We would be grateful for 0.45p/lt.

The supermarkets don’t pay the farmer :) the milk goes to a processor first

We need 50ppl + to give us a chance to pay off debt and reinvest in the welfare of the cow , but not just the cow . The actual farmer and his family do not take very much out of the business to live , I would be surprised to hear of farmers taking over £20 k out of the farm for their personal income unless they are debt free being a 2-3-4 generation owner occupier or tenants that pay a low rent for a well equipped farm and those are few and far between . The problem that will arise when we do get a fair price is that people will increase production as a business is in itself an organisation to produce profit . So along with a fair price there needs to be agreement with the processors on how much fairly priced milk they need , the production above this can be sold on a price based on the low priced powder market or the Global Dairy Trade as all milk is priced now .

Here in NZ we are getting around 56 cents or 27 pence…. Things are tight but most farms paying their way

How are main supermarkets making money ( & their suppliers ) selling 1 litre UHT cartons at 55-60p each / a litre ?

I know the answer to this, but what happens if you get a fair price? 50p or more? who regulates supply, if you all increse milk output by 10% (may or maynot happen) with what happen last time farmers were garenteed a fair price, and we ended up with butter mountains etc in storage. this is why high fair prices are sometimes self defeating. would you welcome some form of marketing board to regulate supply if the result was you could get 50p/liter or more as a fair price? I also liked the suggestion quality pays better etc so min fair prices with extras. this may let a fair price exist without a marketing board type system of control. for those in this indusrty which would be better?

I was surprised at how low the pence per litre was. I’m a non farmer and I thought to myself a 2l bottle of Pepsi Max is about £1.80, it’s got to cost more to rear a cow and feed it than it costs to produce a similar size bottle of chemicals, so I thought a fair price would be about £1 per litre. Why are the milk producers not getting a fair price? I would be happy to pay £1 with the current level of food prices.

A fair price poll will never show consistent results as the costs vary from farm to farm. Rental vs ownership, land production, economies of scale. One question you should ask is what size should a dairy farm be to be viable.

I think the problem here is one of globalism………..it’s not impossible to store ‘milk’ for long long periods. Meaning that corporations like N*stle can play the global commodity markets and buy bulk, when cheap and dehydrate the product. Of course there is no global standard, and whether they care or not, if there was., is another point. it means they ultimately control every aspect of supply and cheap, no standard wins out. This has always been my issue with the EU, they could and should control all imports to the continent, and ensure all is on a level playing field. But if you think about it, this an almost impossible task, unless you want to be a North Korean type state. Same goes for steel and essentially all manufacturing……..it will end only when suppliers costs increase past our costs, or put simply, when we can no longer afford theirs and our products become viable. As a pig farmer, I know this all too well.
