I'm an "atypical" italian guy living in Helsinki! I love finnish people - everyone is willing to help (and I asked for a LOT of help, especially on my first days here). Actually, I do love the fact that they don't need to speak all the time - I think it's a matter of personal character. I like to speak only when there's something valuable to say, so it's pretty easy to get along with Finns for me :D As long as you're not touching a Finn, you'll be fine - I've seen someone doing just that at work and, oh boy, it was hilarious! The Finn was sweating and slowly dying :D

I wanted to add that Finns are probably the most humble people I've met - whenever I've got the chance to tell them how much I like Finland, they're always like: "oh, it's nothing, we're not that special"

As far as I know, Finnish people don't like luxury for some reason. They are not into super fancy things. Visually there's no striking difference between rich and poor Finns. Both live in modest homes, drive modest cars and wear modest clothes.

Maksym Frantsuzov You are right, in the Finnish culture showing your wealth is easily seen kind of pompous and embarrassing behavior. One factor is the old Lutheran culture that emphasizes modesty and rejects all bling bling, that still shows in Finnish homes, clothing, design etc. Finns believe envy has a role too, social control works in a small and rather homogeneous country. All tax data is public information so if my neighbor buys a fancy car I can check how much he/she has paid taxes :)

Only true words about finnish people! They're really kind and always ready to help anyone! The high education it's probably one of the reasons why things works there, but the kindness came from the heart, and when you can break the ice wall, they'll be loyal and friends till the end! In my dark days, there's always a finn friend helping and supporting me! Long live to Finland and SISU! Great video, sir! Onnea, Aleksi!

And if you don't mind, please ask the 3 life questions I love to ask most humans. 1) If the world was coming to an end, and you had one last thing to say to the world, what will it be? 2) What is the most important thing to you in life? 3) What do you love about life the most? I'm happy to have found your channel. It's very informative, especially, as I have a Finnish friend of over 40 years. We started as pen-friends when we were both still in high school. We've exchanged quite a lot of letters for years. For some reasons or perhaps as we both became busy with works and other things in life, we later lost contact for some number of years. But now we've reconnected through this modern age of social media. Even as we've only communicated in letters and these days in messaging, I can truly say that Finns are great and loyal friends to have.

That seems that finns indeed very happy about their country and being finns. That's really awesome. And it seems that it's somewhat harder for therm to answer about cons of being finnish than pros Without saying "we're too perfect maybe". For example what's bad about being conservative if all the things are going so well?) Or what is bad in speaking other languages too gramatically correct? All those "stereotyps" in the vid are so very nice actually. I love you , finns :)
@AleksiHimself
@AleksiHimself 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Vlad! This is how we Finns are. :)
@Mimix80
@Mimix80 6 жыл бұрын
I think the only reason for thinking about being too grammatically correct is that some Finnish people are afraid to talk at all. They expect too much of themselves when a lot of people in the world speak English even very incorrectly but they still bond with people quite easily and get the answers or advice they need. Many times Finnish people try to cope on their own even in though situations just because they are too afraid to say something stupid. I think that's what the guy in the video meant.
@Mimix80
@Mimix80 6 жыл бұрын
Also, a lot of Finnish people have so much knowledge and wisdom to share but out of the fear of sounding stupid (for some reason I don't understand) they speak quite shortly or quietly, tell about their ideas only when asked or avoid speaking at all. Maybe that's because of respecting the other people's personal space also on the area of knowledge and skills. We don't want to push our ideas and knowledge on other people if they don't ask. I think sometimes it works but on some areas of life it doesn't work so well. Like when you're actually supposed to share your ideas in your workplace or in your studies.

I can honestly say that, coming from a Northern part of the USA, Helsinki reminded me of my home. I don't understand the stereotype that Finns are not social. I was travelling from Vantaa to Helsingin rautatieasema and had no idea what to do. I asked a random person if he spoke English, in Finnish, and he invited me to sit with him and walked with me nearly the entire journey to the bar. There, three people invited me to party with them the rest of the night. Then I shared a cab back to Vantaa with three more people, saving me about 20€ in cab fair. The cab driver didn't speak English, but I could ask him how much I had to pay, and understood the amount he said. The cab ride only was 25€, but I gave him 35€ (which he tried to turn down). Moral of the story? If you learn enough Finnish to ask people if they can speak your language, Finns understand and will help you. If you ask in English, they probably won't because you didn't attempt to even learn any of their language before going there.
@tiawol9310
@tiawol9310 3 жыл бұрын
Oh no, we will try to help no matter if you ask i english or in finnish. :) Almost everyone can speak english quite fluently here, since we all learn it in school for at least 6-7 years (since we are 9 years old), and for 10 years if you go to high school. Also, it's part of a Finnish mindset that you help if someone is in need of help. It's common to think that you just don't leave people in trouble. It's actually in the law too, that if you see someone in a dangerous situation (like life-threatning or smth) and you don't do anything, you can be sued for it if someone saw that. Anyhow, just trying to say that most finns would be ashamed to leave someone in trouble if they come to ask you for help. We might not always approach strangers to offer help ourselves, but if someone comes asking for it, we almost always do our best. Of course there are exceptions too, but as a general rule I'd say that.

I understand now, why people do it, but I guess because of my background I wasn't encouraged to ask questions or talk, so when I did start talking more I just wanted to talk about serious subjects like religion and politics because I wanted to understand how the world worked. I'm still learning re. the latter.

Aleksi Himself - Videos about Finland Thank you for your answer. I was curious because weirdly i am attached to ancestry.com or 23andme.com videos and i discovered this connection. Your language doesn't fit in the area i know that and there was the other Turkish guy that you took videos together and you were like "This sounds like Finnish." Although our language got mixed a lot, we still use some words from earlier Turkish like "ben" means "I" and it is "men" in other Turkic countries. Maybe the reason is i am trying to understand my ethnicity since it's quite complexed. I feel like i am in an search of smth. Thanks again btw :) good days :)

Aleksi Himself - Videos about Finland i mean, Turkish is a language that you can learn through speaking not writing. By saying that, i know every language is learned by speaking but what i am saying is not like that. I mean in Turkish writing has no importance and if you want to become an expert on Turkic languages you should look at the way it sounds, pronounciates, not the way that you write. Like i can understand the Turkish that Azerbaijani Turks and Balkan Turks are talking, Azerbaijani Turks can understand Turkey and Turkmenistan, Turkmenistan can understand Ozbeks and Azerbaijan... This goes like this until the East Turkistan in China which you may know them as Uyghurs. I think we can apply the same thing to you also. Btw www.alfabesi.com/orhun-alfabesi/ this is the alphabet that earlier Turks used. Gokturks. If you are interested in you can check for Orkhun Ruins. :)

We are all relatives, it depends on how far back in time you go. But Finnish and Turkish? Then you have to go really far back in time. I'm not an expert but my best guess is 30000 years.
