It is not showing off if a person feels happy because he has done an act of worship, because that is a sign of his faith. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever feels happy because of his good deeds and sad because of his bad deeds, that is the believer.” Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said: ...."When the basic motive for worship is to be seen by others, such as one who stands and prays so that people will see him, and so that they will praise him for his prayers. I don't quite understand Does it mean like I you are doing ibada like reading Quran and someone walks in and you close it, that is riya? Or does it mean if we are doing ibada not properly and we stop when someone walks in that is riya? Jazakallahu khairan

From what i understand is when you are reading Quran, then someone walks in and you close it, that means you are worried to be judged being riya by someone else. And that worried feeling shows you are riya. Because what other people think about you is matter to you. So he told us that when we are doing ibadah, think of no one else because ibadah is about us and Allah alone. Don't mind what other people might think. You are doing ibadah is purely because you want to worship Allah, so whether people walk in or not, watching or not, you don't care and just continue your ibadah for Allah as long as you don't disturb anyone else, or of course it'll be riya, too, once you disturb someone else, like doing dzikir in loud voice and disturbing someone next to you doing their ibadah. Wallahu'alam bissawab
