I’m an architectural designer with education and years of experience in that field, plus I’ve done furniture and millwork design of low production quantities. I’ve recently have turned my attention to product design, and the differences I’ve noticed are quite profound from architecture. Something that’s mass produced takes a lot more thought and planning. The processes of production are of much concern. Material availability and cost are primary constraints too. I can do something like design a house that cost 3x the average and takes about 3x the labor to build, and that project can be done successfully. But if a industrial design for product has 3x the cost, then the company making it is likely a sunk ship.

I literally just discovered this career path today through my career advisor and through what she told me about it, I might’ve found the career I want that I never knew existed. Not only has it given me a WHOLE new appreciation for my belongings and surroundings, but it’s also just given me more inspiration to potentially lead a career as an ID. I’ve actually been doing it without even knowing. I always liked to redesign cars in my pastime, albeit most of them are sketches and doodles lol. I like to go into the details such as the headlights, door panels, seats, dashboard, etc. I’ve spend hours upon hours trying to think of new designs, what the buyers already like and what would make it even more desirable. Maybe adding in retro features while refreshing the look to attract buyers old and new. It made me realize that I’ve been doing it since childhood. Drawing washing machines, traffic lights, etc. Their designs just fascinated me and maybe this is the career I’ve been looking for. Almost feels a little too good to be true but there is not one career so far that has felt as familiar and fun as Industrial Design. I know it’s never gonna always be sunshine and rainbows but if it means putting my passion to work, I’m willing to give it a shot.

Industrial design, is a field within the greater discipline of Design. It's industrial because it's the design of products made by industry. Products made in a factory in mass numbers. It sits between disciplines like architecture and fine art. It's frustrating to me how many confuse industrial design with things like industrial engineering, and industry related activities. It might be easier had it simple been called product design. There's even an ad here on you tube for "industrial design services" that is not about products but about factories and other industrial functions. LoL. So much ignorance...
