I work at a county jail as a cook and I always feel so bad for people on holidays. Luckily the county I work for we have decided to try to serve the best food we can even if it costs a bit more. I do a full thanksgiving meal for everybody including homemade gravy and everything. It honestly makes me happy to help someone going through it and not being able to be around family or friends and make their time a little bit better.

Canned potatoes are usually thrown into stews / casseroles here in the UK for people who are on tight budgets, because it’s filling & big tins of potatoes are relatively cheap. As for watermelon slices (& other sliced fruit), it’s usually for single person households who can’t consume an entire watermelon / pineapple / insert other fruits here alone, but also helpful for people like me who are disabled & find it super hard to cut up fruits like that! I agree on the waste though, although where I live we have an amazing recycling system where our plastic gets repurposed over in Sweden I believe :) xx

One reason we have watermelon already cut up in plastic containers is because some people want to buy watermelon but don't want a whole watermelon and don't want to waste food, and also because some people are physically unable to cut up a watermelon. I have a friend who is disabled and can only use one hand. It's hard to cut up fruit with one hand. If she couldn't buy fruit that was already cut up, it would really limit her access to fresh fruit. I agree that a lot of plastic is bad for the environment and wish there were alternatives to that available in stores. But some people really do benefit from being able to buy fruit that is already cut up.

The butter reminded me of something my brother told me once. At the time he had just started working in the kitchen of a senior citizen’s care facility. He was telling me how proud they were talking up how every meal they serve is fortified to maintain a healthy weight on the residents. Then he said “ you know how we fortify the food? With loads and loads of butter, everything is dripping in it.”

I've had to stay in a rest (?) home twice & thanked God every day for sisters who brought me real chow that had flavor.
@MaxRide12 жыл бұрын
sadly, you're right (or your brother is) it also makes it easier to swallow for the older 'senior citizens' to swallow which reduces the chances of them choking - because their 'swallowing muscles' (I don't know the real names) are weak (much like all the others) which can increase the risk of choking if they eat 'normal' food. So any food in care facilities gets cooked to death (basically to mush) and has lots of 'slippery' ingredients added - like butter - to make it all easier to swallow. Granted all of this doesn't make it taste very nice but there you go. Health and safety mean more than taste and enjoyment, especially when liability is concerned.

Wow! You put a lot on that tray compared to when I was in County Jail in Ohio. I realize that’s a holiday tray but even the holiday tray was smaller than yours. Oh and in Ohio, county serves bologna sandwiches for dinner with two generic Oreos. We kept count once and we were eating almost half a loaf of white bread everyday. No exaggeration!!! Still, nothing compares to the food we got served in County Jail in Alabama( Lauderdale County I am talking about you specifically). I didn’t get a holiday tray there but the daily trays were as follows: breakfast was a half of a day old biscuit, one piece of turkey bacon or a small round piece of mystery meat and watered down kool aid. Lunch was a small sized hot dog with bun (only one mind you) and literally four or five crinkled French fries with a dab of ketchup. Dinner was a cheap bologna(no Oscar Meyer here!) sandwich, four or five fries or a canned veg and if you are lucky a couple of generic Oreos for dessert. Sometimes they’d switch lunch and dinner but it was always those three trays everyday. There was NO WAY those trays met calorie guidelines! I couldn’t ever get full, so I don’t know how a two hundred and fifty pound dude who is 6 ft y’all could even survive!!! It’s insane that some jails can get away with this bs…

There was always a half gallon of Italian seasoning, and that’s all we had to use for gravy for a week 😂 it was absolutely disgusting. Also remembered one time we got chicken and waffles but the warden wanted to ruin that for everyone so she wandered around outside the fence right before and at the beginning of lunch till a guard spotted something moving and she acted like it wasn’t her so they locked down the facility and made us leave the FIRST good meal we had ever had so they could count us for eight hours straight to figure out where an inmate was missing. Eventually the warden admitted to them she was testing them, but we didn’t get the one good meal they ever offered and it was just really bad timing on her part

From a logistical and actuarial position, how much costs are incurred in property damages and costs of managing/controlling nearly malnourished people? It seems to me that the personnel requirements to manage a population that is getting the bare minimum ALONE would overwhelm adding 50% to the food budget? Keeping people on near starvation is keeping them on a hair trigger which will increase incidents and increase costs of management and repair. The inmates have enough reasons/inclinations to cause trouble, why add another risk factor into the equation?

2:45 Canned potatoes? I don't get it either. As an Irishman*, that just ate fried potatoes for dinner...I didn't know that canned potatoes was a thing. Just keep them in a dry, dark, cool area and they last for ages. My grandparents where farmers. They had just had two small sheds with piles of potatoes and it was fine as long as the door was shut to keep them in the dark, out of the rain and away from mice, rats, and whatever else lived outside that would want to eat them. Buy I guess if you live in Florida, its gonna be hot and very humid all the time, so that's probably gonna create a lot of mold very fast. I think our climate here in Ireland is definitely humid, but way too cold for that to be a problem for a few weeks months anyway. *Don't worry, I'm not offended at the idea or anything. People that get offended at cultural appropriation are racists by definition. Potatoes came from America, not Ireland. We culturally appropriated them into our culture and anyone that judges us for doing that is as I mentioned earlier, a racist by definition. Anyway, back to this video...

I am very surprised that instant potatoes are cheaper then actual potatoes that you did nothing too. Because instant potatoes requires a process. Regular potatoes, you just pull them out of the ground and wipe the dirt off them.

My sister will be getting out this Sunday but she's currently sitting in jail and she will be in jail on Thanksgiving so this video kind of like I don't know is hitting me a little different but I'm definitely going to have to show her your videos when she gets out the 27th

Oh. I hope she is doing well. Can you do a Sunday Thanksgiving for her? That would be lovely.
@lou36392 жыл бұрын
@@ms_cartographer thank you for your concern and yeah that's what I told her because I talked to her on the phone earlier today and she was crying like kind of upset but just breaks my heart to hear my sister like that but I told her I said I'm not going to have Thanksgiving without you so when you get out Sunday we'll just have Thanksgiving then just think of it as you know we're just celebrating Thanksgiving a different day that's all

@@stephanieseahorse4165 yeah me too ❤️💯😔 I told her I didn't mind sending money and other stuff to make her time easier but that it was getting expensive so I'm glad she's almost out. And another thing too is she's my twin sister and our birthday is Christmas Eve 🎄so I'm definitely glad she'll be out for our birthday as well🥰

Interesting video. A friend was released from federal prison earlier this year. Her description of the food was awful. She described Thanksgiving Turkey as pale coloured slimy processed meat. In UK jails the budget for meals is around $3 per inmate per day. Breakfast is usually a carton of milk, cereal, 2 slices of toast with butter or jam. Lunch a sandwich maybe soup or chips and a piece of fruit. Main meal something hot pies, pasta, fish, meat with vegetables. There are usually choices Vegan/Vegetarian, Low Fat, Healthy Option, Halal and standard. During Ramadan Muslims are given hot meals in thermos containers to eat after subset. Diabetics are given extra milk because the whitener is made from glucose syrup a sandwich and an extra piece of fruit. Inmates work in the kitchen get certificates in food hygiene and catering useful after release. Each day the duty governor/warden has to visit the kitchen taste the meal options and sign a daybook to say the food meets the required standards. Authorised civilian monitors (Board of Visitors) Visit prisons regularly they can turn up unannounced and on planned visits. Request and be given access to go anywhere, speak to inmates and staff. They also check the food. It's not gourmet food or best quality but it's edible and nutritional and as much as possible is fresh or frozen rather than processed or out of date.

Canned potatoes are a lot of times used for soups or things that pretty much use potatoes as a filler instead of just for taste. They’re not the best eaten by themselves but anything is good with enough salt and butter lmao. They’re good to donate to food pantries because they last a long time and isn’t chick peas or green beans

Our county's sheriff department waited 6 months from charges being filed the Friday before Thanksgiving to come arrest me in front of my kids when I offered to come to the jail as soon as the charges were filed. Our holiday meals was exactly what you made and described we were all constantly starving and would do anything for just a extra bite of food.

In my prison experiences we had sliced turkey with bland ass side dishes. I never ate it, I always sold it to someone else
