If you’re thinking, then you’re not doing it right. It’s all about the flow. Just my opinion

My thinking is a bit 'tetris'-like, so these groups of notes suggest themselves to me, slightly before I commit to playing them. Because I can't always fit that tetris musical component, I use what I can, and try and make it all fit together. Sometimes I 'really' want to play what I was thinking of, then I stop and play it exactly. I can only do that in shed time, most times it's worth doing, but sometimes it was an impossible line! Even so, I usually try and mod it to fit, so use a version of it. If you listen to some old jazz recordings, you can actually hear the player quietly singing the line they're actually improvising, while they play it!

Enjoying these kind of vlogs Daniel! Keep sharing these. They are more valuable then you'd imagine!! Especially coming from a player like you! Idea: Maybe you can also talk about your flow while actually improvising? Thanksss

Fully agree with you, once you get the language down you just flow and make sure to be on point. I think doing a video on how you reflect on recording yourself will be really cool.

I frequently hear phrases like mind's ear or visualization used when discussing learning improvisation. Is the ability to imagine necessary to improvise? I have a condition called aphantasia which means I can't imagine. Thanks Daniel.

I’m no expert, but I’m of the opinion that improvisation in music is a result of being ‘fluent.’ I mean fluent in the same way that it’s used in languages. When you typed your message, did you have to slowly think how to write each sentence? If you are fluent in English, you didn’t. The words are ingrained in their meaning. I worked in a kitchen where everyone spoke Spanish and I didn’t. So instead of being able to say “the chicken is done” I would have to stop and figure out “what’s chicken in Spanish? How do I say done?” But there were some occasions where I had used a Spanish phrase so much that there was no thinking, no time lag at all. In music (to me), a word is like an interval, and a sentence is like a melody or phrase. And this is where relative pitch comes in. If I hear a major third, I can recognize that as quickly as I can hear the word “pollo” and know it means “chicken.” If I hear a simple melody like the Star Wars opening, I recognize it like simple Spanish sentences “Este pollo es no bueno” or “this chicken is not good.” Those are silly examples, but the point is the same mechanism that allowed you to learn fluent English should allow you to slowly build up your relative pitch. At least, that’s my opinion.

@@debaser1042 Very interesting and helpful take! Makes a lot of sense when you think about it that way. Thanks.
