Good to see a young person explaining the details besides the program was very well compered with good questions - The Print is definitely setting a trend in good, informative and largely unbiased journalism, please keep up the good work, ensures eyeballs in the medium and long term.

Thanks for picking my question and an otherwise very educational session. Appreciate Radhika's fair-minded and forthright comments on economic matters.

One thing that perplexes me is the unemployment issue. I was looking at CMIE data for December and frankly it is shocking. Haryana has an unemployment rate of 37% , Delhi is at 20% ,Rajasthan, Bihar and Jharkhand are close to 20% or above. These are catastrophic numbers. Interestingly UP does better at 4% , even Punjab is okay at 6%. Something is very wrong in the policies of some of these states. Haryana , Delhi and Rajasthan are unbelievable, they are fairly rich states with different parties but they all have ridiculous levels of unemployment.

maybe the numbers are wrong if it's so ridiculous

I seriously doubt the haryana and Delhi data... It's very hard to see it. May be they are taking people who can work but aren't working(like a few farmers near Gurgaon and Faridabad) also into consideration.

@@swarajkumar1758 i agree CMIE numbers are quite dubious. Surveys always have huge errors.

@@swarajkumar1758 No, the numbers are probably RIGHT. It is easier to estimate or measure unemployment rate in Urbanized states as the majority of population lives in cities/towns and are engaged in manufacturing or services. However, states like UP are largely agrarian, which means agriculture is the largest employer. If the agriculture sector is not doing bad then the unemployment rate ( better to call it rural unemployment) is less in poorer states. I live in Kerala, which is a relatively wealthy state with high social indicators but have one of the highest unemployment rate in the country. Here also an interesting fact is that most unemployment people are well educated & have at least a degree or diploma.

CMIE data is bogus. 4 out of 10 unemployed would have been visible to the naked eye. There could be the case of "underemployment" but these numbers are far-fetched for unemployment.

As India is not a strong Exporter, We have to depend on strong local demand, which in turn depends on Jobs & wages, urban & rural.

Increasing Skill level of the human resource available is the best way for economical growth. Investing in infrastructure of skill learning is an requirement. Help from both Government & Private Industry is required for this.

A 7% GDP growth estimate for 2022-23 is not bad, but for India to join the Second World Economy (Per Capita GDP of >$10,000) from the current Per Capita GDP of $1980 it will take decades. For most Egoistic Indians who want to believe that India is already a First World Economy (Per Capita GDP of >$30000) it is a very distressing news, indeed. Something very weird is happening. As India grows at 7%, its Exports and Imports also grows; but, the NET, there is Trade Deficit depreciating the Rs unless RBI interferes in FX market, which hurts India's Foreign Reserves negatively. Why is this happening? Most of the Economies which showed torrid growth after WWII (Japan, Germany, South Korea, Singapore etc) all showed Trade Surplus with their Export Emphasis. Why is India not giving a concerted emphasis on Export Emphasis, taxing heavily the Imports? Modi Raj lost lots of value in Re depreciation in the last 9 years. Only the very Rich is doing economically well, leaving the average Indian in the dumpster. Rich Indians and Corporates consume plenty of foreign goods, smartphones, jeans, expensive watches, cars etc leading to the NET Trade Deficit. Modi could very well see the Negative Effects of his Supply Side Top Down Economics, and revert to the Demand Side Bottom Up, Middle Out Policies which will benefit all the Average and Poorer Indians! Just a Thought!!!

Mate, for India to transition to tier 2 income countries, India will need not Billions but Trillions of dollars. The ONLY way for this to happen is for India to become a manufacturing hub. For that to happen you need excellent infrastructure. Modi govt has done a stupendous job in the infra section. And the next 4-5 govts will need to continue to push on infra with the same passion.
@mohamedhabib8460
@mohamedhabib8460 Жыл бұрын
@@CoolITTrends I agree to some extent. 1. Yes, India needs Trillions of dollars of Investment. Who will provide it? Domestic Savers? Not enough from the Local Source. It must come from very rich FDIs and FIIs. Why is it not coming in so far, when it can go to many other large economies? India has a broken Court System, & ancient Labor Laws, and Corruption is pandemic & endemic. For the Court to adjudicate a small snag in the Contracts, it will take enormous time and need to pay up the bribes to many actors! 2, What do you want to manufacture? Where do you want to Export "that" manufactured goods? First, we need a Grand Strategy: What to & Where to? Where will the DEMAND come from? Without this, it will be like China building Vacant Cities of Houses, left unoccupied for years! So, we need to learn the lessons of HOW Japan, Germany, S. Korea, Singapore did economically post WWII: Enter into Preferred Nation Status with the mighty US and EXPORT all the goods manufactured to US Markets in HUGE quantity! But, our Foreign Policy stinks. We sleep with Putin, the Villain of the West! How can we ask the Preferred Nation Status from the US? In conclusion, India's Courts, Labor Policy, Business Policy, Foreign Policy all stink to the heavens! Modi/Seetharaman talk the talk, NEVER understand the nuances of International Trade and Wealth Creation to help the impoverished average Indians! Lol...

There is inverted duty structure, where tax in inputs is high, and that on finished goods is high. This impacts value-added exports. This is expected to be corrected in upcoming budget. GST rationalisation will help.
