I fully agree, I have come across negative reception of even my ideas for writing a book by people closest to me. We dont control the reception, we control the input, and for most of us, most of small time writeres we write for ourselves. I dont write for the public, I write for myself and positive reviews is and unexpected bonus

...to what?? Doom? Madness? I admit, I sometimes feel disconnected from "modern" sci-fi by not reading current stuff as much. However, I do intend to do a series on the 100 Novels and 1000 Short Stories and such that best represent the first 25 years of sci-fi (and eventually, fantasy). So, I guess I'll get caught up at some point.
