As a child of 5, I was in a real airplane fire on board a Super Constellation of Aerolíneas Argentinas. One of the engines exploded and caught fire. I remember seeing bright red sparks and very black smoke coming out of it and the propeller blades still, probably feathered. The plane began to dive. The noise was terrific, the three remaining engines racing. My Mom had buckled me up tight by her side while my two brothers ran up and down the aisle shouting "Hurrah! The plane caught fire! Hurrah!" Women fainted, cried, prayed. Grown men had fits of panic and one of them tried to break into the cockpit only to be knocked down by a huge soldier. The next thing I remember the plane was banking very hard and then silence. Some time later there was much roaring of engines again - the one that had failed was still smoking - and suddenly the plane shuddered as it landed somewhere and came to a stop. There was smoke in the cabin. We were evacuated within a minute or two (forget women and children first). There was a single ladder and we seemed to be on a muddy dirt strip in the middle of nowhere (actually it was a small civilian airfield). Mom carried me down and my brothers followed with big smiles. I remember looking back and seeing one of the landing wheels smoking heavily, probably from excessively harsh braking. I was told many years later that the pilot had done some amazing piece of flying, dropping from cruising altitude all the way down to the first strip of flat land he could find. He was a former Argentine Navy aviator with thousands of hours on Corsairs and knew exactly what to do if your plane caught fire: Get down as soon as you can anywhere you can. He probably saved us all.

What about Jimmy Ward who did what Cyril Did but in a Wellington. He strapped himself to the inside and climbed out on the wing to put out the fire. He succeeded and was also given the Victorian cross.

As the Wellington was of a geodetic construction (spars crisscrossed in a diamond formation covered in doped fabric), he kicked foot and handholds through the fabric to give him purchase. This gave him something to hold on to in the slipstream and aided his efforts.

I am studying to become a commercial pilot, from now on I only fly Cessna... But the fire procedures are pretty much the same! I guess they might be good! Also, for some kind of fires, the procedure says "Increase speed to 100 or 120 kts (190km/h)" as if you were blowing a candle; Increase speed until flames separate from the 'fuel'. What do you think about it? Maybe there was some kind of 'not teached' practice consisting on DIVING to put off small fires!? Anyway, Great videos Bismark! Keep it up!!

I have a newspaper clipping of an interview with my great great uncle Charles Flannagan who was a B-17 pilot. He apparently had a rocket explode off his left wing, igniting the wing tank. He was about to signal to his crew to bail, but had to dive to evade some 190's. The next time he had a chance to assess the fire, it was gone. Purely anecdotal of course, just thought I'd share. :)

Fly the plane while everyone else fights the fire. As the man said it was part of their training. If that fails make sure your parachute is on, sinched tight and ready to go. Upon the order to abandon ship open all hatch and jump out, one by one. Of course flak changes things a bit. Adapt and carry on. Make sure your wounded buddies have gotten out and the chutes opened for them. Then after everyone else in the ship has bailed out, the pilot or copilot can jump.

Remember: if your cabin fire is a result of the oil getting too hot in your deep-fry chip pan, DON'T POUR WATER INTO IT! Turn off the fryer, and put a wet cloth over the top. Do not engage in a roll manoeuvre unless you have opened the canopy, as you will spill the burning oil into the cabin, but this is a final measure that should be avoided as the burning oil really does go everywhere, and you will also lose the fries you're trying to cook. For safety reasons, it's better to swap out the chip pan with a microwave, and just have microwave fries while you're flying, they might not be as nice, but really, just wait til you're back on the ground for the deep frying.

Wow all those pictures of the Martin B-26 Marauder in flames. Was this particular plane prone to fires? It's early variants were called 'widow makers' as they were tricky to fly-and I could only imagine trying to fly on one engine after shutting down to kill the fire. Regardless I've always loved the looks of the B-26. (Lowest casualty rate of all bombers in WW2 if the plane didn't kill you.)

I am 10 seconds through the video, but I think that rolling over is one of solutions. WWII planes had carburator enginers, so rolling over would cut off the fuel intake. Might be wrong though
@AbolaSpartan
@AbolaSpartan 6 жыл бұрын
Саян Ильяс Depends. Bf109s had fuel- injection engines so a roll over would do nothing. Early Spitfires had that issue of carburator engines but if the fire isn't an engine fire then good luck in surviving. Japanese planes were mostly wooden so a fire anywhere was likely deadly. Heavy bombers like a B-17 or Lancaster may not be able to roll over anyway.

Hai Bismarck, I was wondering if i could tug your ear for a sec. In war thunder, the 88 Flak truck was hyped for being a "Heavy Flak" vehicle yet we don't have any timed explosive shells. Yes we do have HE but that explodes on impact. what I wanted your opinion on is: Is it worth putting in the game? It would boost the Flakbus's SPAA abilities immensely and give it a solid counter for planes, I would love this seeing as most of the time when i play this i either die to tanks or to planes dive bombing my because my HE didn't hit them directly. I do see a reason why it shouldn't tho. A timer must be set for each round, but how would that be implemented? would each shell fuse have to be set before loading or would it be set at the vehicle selection screen? I see a few good reasons for it being in and a few for it not being in. I'd like your opinion on the matter if you wouldn't mind and if this was all too many words to read i apologize for that

I've often thought about the lack of consideration for emergencies in British bombers in WWII. For a start, the turrets were so small that they could only accommodate the airman without his parachute. In the case of the tail gunner in a Lancaster, it was stored just outside his turret but he still had to clip it on. The Air ministry seemed unable to comprehend the idea that a bomber which has been hit by Flak or a nightfighter and has been mortally damaged is unlikely to stay straight and level for long. In their minds, it seems, the order would be give, "Alright chaps, we've had it. Time to go", and everyone would calmly clip on their parachutes and make an orderly run for the exits. The truth, of course, was horrifyingly different. If the aircraft fell apart, the chances of escape were pretty slim indeed. Some pilots, like Bill Reid (also a VC recipient), were lucky and got sucked out of the top hatch by the draught. Bomb aimers tended to have a higher rate of successful escapes. I think the reason for this was probably two-fold: firstly, they had enough room to keep their parachutes clipped on (though they probably didn't) and 2) they were closest to the escape hatch in the floor. But the idea of trying to get out when pinned to the structure by 6G of rotational energy and your aircraft falls from the sky is horrific. No chance of escape there. For those who don't know, RAF Bomber Command crews suffered 44% fatalities in WWII. The only service I know of which was higher than that was Kriegsmarine U-Boat sailors.

I have a feeling at the first sign of fire the crew will yell fire then grab chutes, then attempt to fight the fire. I understand Modern Jets have one rule for a fire, at the first sign of fire, eject.

but at high attitude there would not be oxygen for the fire to burn plus the wind rushing by would put it out

Good thing you specified WW2. If it were a WW1 aircraft, then the answer would be too quick for a good video. Which is to say, that’s why they issue you a Revolver

WW1 aircraft pilots and gunners weren't issued parachutes is the point spindash was making. You either burned alive, jumped to your death, or got exceedingly lucky and where low enough to do a controlled crash to get out. Most jumped to their death, fire is a very painful way to die.

No, you have no fire extinguishing device for the fuel tanks, just for the engines. If fire catches on a fuel tank , you bail out.
