With big saw dust pile always throw a small piece of wood into the pile before climbing on it, to make sure it is not on fire under it, the entire pile under the top dust can be on fire. And be aware some times a wet saw dust pile can catch on fire under it just from its own heat, from decomposing.

My grandfather raised blueberries and we went to the local sawmill for sawdust to ring around the bushes. It was great fertilize as it decomposed. That was 50 years ago and it’s still a good practice.

In my experience the best compost is made from a variety of materials, "green" and "brown" mixed together. Wood products tend to consume nitrogen from the soil as they break down, so it is best that wood materials be well aged to make good compost. I use the loader on my tractor to turn the piles of mixed material primarily oak leaves, pine needles, lawn clippings, and kitchen waste. It is not necessary to have fancy compost bins, the piles work well if they are turned once in a while. I enjoy your videos. Looks like spring is arriving in the south.

As a child growing up I was raised with both a dairy farm and a sawmill. The fastest way I ever saw to compost pine sawdust was to use it for bedding in the free stalls. As it became soiled we would pull it out on the barn floor and scrap it into the liquid manure pit. It is a great way to help add humus to a sandy soil. When used for a bedding in a calf barn pine sawdust does not break down very fast. Because of the lack of constant moisture. By adding hay straw and other materials like uneaten feed, that holds moisture better it broke down quickly. It will help if you stir your pile after a heavy rain this will trap the moisture inside the pile this will cause it to break down quicker. Great video.

We used to spread out a layer of sawdust, then spread a small coating of ag Lyme and fire pit/wood stove ash on it, and then would repeat. Every once in a while we would turn it with the bucket tractor. With in a couple of years it would the darkest most fertile dirt you could get. We had the space to run multiple piles so we could separate out hardwood from softwood. Softwood would break down quicker. Good video 👍

This was a great video Tyler and Brittney! It’s incredible the number of “Monday morning QB’s” who watch uTube videos. Why, because so many uTuber’s spend half of their videos explaining to novices the reasons for their methodology and process. It has to be frustrating but you both handle it graciously.

As a retired firefighter from Alabama the people who didn't clean out their Is chimney at the start of winter you can lose your house I don't remember how many chimney fires there I had to go out and put them out and if you put water down the chimney you Crack the chimney wall and then fire can get out and Spread it through the rest of the house

Could you slide a piece of plywood between the pile and mill to keep from pushing it under the mill, then use the bucket on your tractor to scoop it out? That would cut out a lot of scooping by hand.

build you a box the length of sawdust or as much as you can fit from post to post in your shop. make it where forks can go under. the side closet to the mill open. when your box gets full drive the forks under it and dump it all at one time

that's a good idea what he is doing with some of the beds by putting sticks and limbs in,, later that will rot down and help make better soil. I guess pine will be ok for that,, up here in MO. we have several black walnut trees and the roots will kill tomatoes and peppers and the like, but I think the limbs will fine .

The local sawmills make good money from the waste sawdust and shavings selling to local farmers. The larger mills have a machine that bags the shavings that all the horse and small animals owners spend good money to buy. I am glad to see you have one smart horse owner who is willing to do a little work to save money on bedding.

Pine burns hot and fast plus all that pine rosen will build up in your chimney over time and cause a chimney fire if you don't keep you chimney cleaned! Pine is better suited for a camp fire that's about all its good for but some people like to burn it in wood stoves but they clean their chimney every year and people burn any kind of wood in their outside boilers!

I've been mixing sawdust and planer shavings with grass clippings for over 35 years. I don't garden but all my friends who do can't get enough of my compost. They call it black gold. Try mixing something green with the sawdust to make better compost. Just dust alone takes forever to break down and the PH is no good.
