I've read the two books in the kingkiller Chronicles ten times over and I don't regret a moment. I've never read a fantasy series so grounded. I'll definitely be looking at his book recommendations too. Love you Pat.

Fascinating that the best authors in the fantasy genre wrote themselves into plot knots which they seem unable to escape from.

@asheykamp6 жыл бұрын
@@darksaint0124 It's subjective anyway, right? Name of the Wind is definitely one of the best fantasy novels of this century. Where exactly you put it on the list might be different, but it's still a great book.
@darksaint01246 жыл бұрын
@Andrew to get on my list you have to finish your series. I have seen authors fail spectacularly on the last book in a series before.
@asheykamp6 жыл бұрын
@@darksaint0124 That doesn't mean that the entire series or an individual book in the series isn't good. The last Harry Potter book has a pretty substantial pacing issue, but no one's saying that the entire series is shit. That'd be a substantially unpopular opinion to hold. Name of the Wind is an amazing book in its own right, even if the series isn't finished yet.
@darksaint01246 жыл бұрын
As you said it is subjective. How you feel about a book or series isn't necessarily how I will feel. I've been burnt by series that never got a conclusion or tropey cop out endings that can literally make previous works suffer when taken as a whole too many times. It might be different if that same author has proven that they can stick the landing before, but a series is a series and not a standalone story.

A decade ago when I read Name of the Wind and was enamored by it, I discovered an interview with him very early in his success. I was very fond of how humble he was despite being so articulate and easy to listen to. Now he strikes me as overly verbose, arrogant, and openly hostile towards very reasonable requests/expectations from his fans to promises that he made and broke. I'll read the third book, and probably love it. But the man behind the words has clearly been spoiled by the spotlight.

What the fuck everyone? Pat is a human being, and he's working on it. Just wait for the book, or stop caring. Go read something else. There are tons of great books out there. If you don't have the ability to empathize with Pat for taking his time, and putting it out when he thinks it is good enough, then go somewhere else. Don't watch his videos, don't read his books. You're not helping anyone

The arrogance of this commentsection is asthonishing. Pat owes you nothing. And if it takes another 10 years for DoS, that's completly okay. You would hate him for putting out a book that can't hold up to your expectations. And btw. he's a father of two, deals with depression and has other projects to work on. Also, how many people are utterly shocked at the entitlement of some of the "fans" of Rothfuss' books? If you don't like them so much, stop talking about them. If you like them, realize you likely like them because of the vast amount of effort put into them, including brainstorming, drafting, beta reading (which takes time), combing over details and revising for consistency and effective story telling. It's as if people want the fine wine they're grown used to, but are so hasty they're asking for a product to be finished before it is. If they grasped how much time it took for their favorite products to develop, they would be shocked at how long it takes to make something great. It's not even almost embarrassing, it's completely embarrassing. I wish people would use the same entitled impatience on some other kind of worldly promise made by someone, like say, christ returning. At least abandon your belief that christ is coming back if you're upset about a final book in a series taking a small few extra years to get to print.

In 2011 i came across The Name of the Wind and Wise Man's Fear. I was dying to read them, but knowing how impatient and obsessive i am, i decided to wait till the 3rd book came out. I was naive back then...i had not been bitten by G.R.R. Martin and the neverending wait for WoW. These two books have been on my Wishlist for almost 8 years now. Every few months, i check on the updates regarding DoS. And the only thing that has changed is how abrasive, arrogant, entitled, infuriating, aggravating and downright disgusting Patrick Rothfuss has become. Recently my husband (meaning well!) got me the new deluxe 10th anniversary edition of The Name of the Wind and i am in such a dilemma whether to read it or not! I don't want to be left hanging by yet another fantasy author who is either too busy procrastinating or too much of an asshole to actually inform his fans regarding anything!!! Jesus! So absolutely galling! Edit:- Read it. Despice it. The most overrated book i have read in the 2010s. Disappointed but relieved. No waiting for me.

@@kenshin4287 He cares the most, he is the author. If he didn't care the book would be out already, it would be an easy cash grab. If anything the long delay is a good indication that he cares deeply about getting the story right. He doesn't owe fans anything, it is not like they funded the third book. They pay as the books come out. You pay for the first book you get to read the first book. Not a single fan has put forth their own money for book 3 , there isn't any preorder, there is no reason to feel entitled to it. Better to be patient and get a better story. There are plenty of fantasy book series to read in the meantime.

He’s rich! Think about it. The book is still making money. He might as well wait till it sales drop off before he has to increase his income again. If he released now he would loose a huge piece of sales from previous books. Plus, if you watch his early interviews he says he’s already written the whole thing. He stalling. For sure.
