What does a musket really sound like? Reenacting and Reality

While it is technically a massive inaccuracy for reenactors to not shoot each other at events, it seems to me that a certain level of modern safety regulations are probably for the best within the hobby. That being said, merely loading our weapons with blank rounds means that rather than firing with a sharp cracking noise, we produce more of a whooshing sound. It is not nearly as intimidating as a round with the paper wadding rammed home, and of course does not even begin to approach the force of a fully loaded piece. So, when out firing some live rounds, I thought it might be appropriate to show off the differences in sound between a 'reenacting round' and an actual shot. -

Every once in a while this video decides to explode on me again, adding another few hundred K to the viewcount. While I love to see it and welcome you all...honestly I have ~no clue~ why it happens! This is a silly video from when I was really just starting youtube as a hobby! But hey, if you're interested in learning more about 18th Century military history, you may like some of my newer work of a much higher quality! Also to clarify a quick point that many have asked about: When talking about "safety regulations," I was not talking about any firearm laws. Obviously the US has crazy policies (or lack thereof) when it comes to guns and we are definitely *not* more safe than the UK and EU. I was specifically referring to the safety regulations of reenactment events. In the UK, and I've been told in many Continental countries as well, reenactors will use their ramrods, whereas in the US, most reenactment organizations specifically forbid this as not being safe.

I have a video recommendation for you. Do a video that goes into the specifics of equipment and uniform (preferably) of the British one from the American War of Independence. It would for sure help me since I'm trying to put together a uniform, but I'm not totally sure what the specifics of the uniform I need to look nice.

I don't know why it showed up in my stream today; I don't recall seeing any of your videos in my stream before. It's always wonderful when you stumble across a topic that you had not even wondered about before and find it so interesting. Also, the presentation was pleasantly straightforward and clear. Finally, I found your persona to also be very straightforward; lacking in pretension, seemingly not taking yourself too seriously, gentleness, and a hint of humor. All together, a nice combination. You have a new subscriber! (But then, what do I know? You might just be a big jerk...) PS I assume movies use the safest method, perhaps enhanced with something to make a more impressive flame, and then dub in the real sound?

Yeah, the musket balls often had imperfections in them, small air holes or bubbles when they were cast, which was (I guess?) unintentional, but when the ball hit a target, these imperfections caused the ball to explode, dealing much more damage then a perfect musket ball. @@assassinaria fun fact: the transatlantic accent was specifically developed for radio broadcasting because it was meant to be understood by people all over the continent. That's why the enunciation and articulation is so ridiculously heavy. It was never a voice that people spoke in unless they were presenting something through radio or television, so it was pretty much just as forced-sounding to the people in the early 1900s as it is to us because that's exactly what its supposed to be.

There was actually a group of 95th reenactors from Australia (youtube channel cdsadler) who did a test of thing quite some time ago. Fun fact: Muskets, (or any type of muzzleloading firearm) are considered antiques even if newly manufactured and aren't technically considered "modern firearms" by the gun control act of 1968. Meaning pretty much no requirements exist for owning one. Therefore they can and should be owned by everyone in the US. lol!

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Thank you for this. I am a Canadian Armed Forces veteran. I did my basic training in 1978 and that was using the FN-C1 (Fabrique Nationale Canada's 1st, 7.62 mm semi-automatic rifle). I fired it with both blanks and live ammunition and I was aware of the difference. Unlike your musket, we had a BFA (blank firing attachment) which put a steel peg in the barrel so the gases would divert into the piston used to reload the rifle. Without it, you had a bolt action rifle and had to manually reload it every shot. But it still did not report or kick in quite the same fashion as firing a live round. This was an excellent demonstration on your part.

For those who aren’t aware, the “crack” of the gunshot comes from two things, the expanding gasses and - more significantly - the round breaking the sound barrier. With a blank, the gasses expand at their normal rate. Black powder is a very slow-burning propellant, so the explosion isn’t hypersonic, thus it sounds like a fire cracker in a tube (which it essentially is). With the paper, those gasses are compressed, so you get more escaping the muzzle at one time. More gas, more boom. The paper, however, is too light to break the sound barrier and is too soft to resist the immense forces of the expanding gas. With a ball loaded (from the shot of the table, it looked like he was using a .50 caliber ball) there is the sound of well-compressed gasses as well as the shock of a projectile which is strong enough to resist the tremendous strain of breaking the sound barrier. First of all, lead is much denser than paper (go figure) and thus is able to plug the gasses much more effectively. This combined with the sound of the ball breaking the sound barrier and creating a small sonic boom is what makes the live musket shot the loudest.

He's also more articulate than most Europeans. He is more articulate than an average person in general because he raises the bar for himself purposefully so he sounds more authentic in his videos than the "average joe and their disgusting peasant way of speaking." Anyone can pretend like they're speaking in a much higher capacity, this guy just keeps up the act and adopts it as it's own separate persona because appearing smart means so much to him and his videos in order to try and attract/impress like minded individuals. I mean, more power to him, but people are just calling him out for it.

Articulate means to convay oneself effectively and fluently in speach. I see no reason to think that by omitting the final R in words and using archaic speach patterns allows one to more effectively convay their thoughts verbally. If you look at African American Vernacular English for example it allows speakers to convay their thoughts just as effectively as any other accent. The only difference is style which has more to do with cultural preference than level of articulation and fluency.

Oddly enough, I've known several American Civil War reenactors that fire their blanks "European" style. I didn't even know this was considered unsafe, as evident by the fact that myself and a few friends went about 50 yards down range of an ACW firing demonstrations and just sort of walked about, without any of the demonstrators or teachers batting an eye. (To be fair, we were fourth graders and that was well over a decade ago.)
@BrandonF

The standards are certainly very different between hobbies and organizations. The BAR (Brigade of the American Revolution) tends to be rather specific in its safety regulations. That said, I don't see it as being particularly dangerous to load with the paper! Just train every man to know to stamp out a burning bit of paper if he sees it on the ground, perhaps.

A lot of reenactors angle the muskets a little high (over the heads of their "enemy") when they fire so in the event that something should happen go down the barrel say in a "European Style", it is less likely to to injure or hurt someone.

You'd be surprised, actually, how easy it is to get a musket in the UK! Largely just need a shotgun license! There are also a lot of Napoleonic reenactment groups out there. Look around and see if there are any events near you!

@@BrandonF I will indeed. A good friend of mine is involved in Viking re-enactment, he might be able to point me in the right direction. :-) If not, then I'l have a word with my cousins the next time I'm in Florida. They might know someone who has access to one... On firearms legislation over here: yes, it's possible to get a license, but it tends to fall down at the justification for ownership part. I live in Scotland, just outside Glasgow. Our local police have been known to seize legally owned air rifles on a whim. Just trying to get a response from them is difficult, much less overturning their decision. I don't know anyone living on a council estate or a suburban town with a shotgun license, although I know many who've applied. My best bet might be moving back home- I'm from the Hebrides- and getting a hunting license. I'm not particularly bothered about not owning a shotgun, but having to cross the Atlantic just to fire a rifle is bloody annoying! It's about the only thing I miss about being in the services...

People dont understand that it actualy take strenght to always remain civil no matter what. Imagine what unflapable strenght of character does it take to remain civil in the face of real bastards. If you want to see a prime example of what I refer to look up the speeches and record of UK"s chief prosecutor at the Nurnberg trial Hartley William Shawcross, even when confronted with veritable scum of the earth he remained unflapable civil, and composed, not yeilding an inch to vitriol.
