Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Couple of points I'd like to put forward in response though: 1. Although guild wars2 has tab targeting, I believe (off the top of my head, I haven't done a strict number count) that the majority of abilities can actually be dumb fired. There are a number of situations where you can use projectile attacks at greater than (targeted) maximum range, or use attacks on stealthed enemies (for example) which you wouldn't otherwise be able to use if you have to target the enemy first. This can also be useful in PVP where people tend to try to dodge inside your model in order to cancel attack animations, even if the animation still would have hit them because you rotated your character to attack (if you use the skill untargeted you will hit them after their dodge roll instead of missing and putting the skill on short cooldown). 2.There are some classes/weapon combinations in guild wars 2 which have a lot of movement built into them. Ranger sword/dagger is a notable one here, with built in chasing and evasion, backwards and forwards leaping and a flanking attack. Or take an engineer running rifle/elixer gun/rocket shoes - you can jump into attack, jump back out, and then jump back in again when it best suits. There are quite a few other examples but I just wanted to note that a number of movement skills and movement orientated weapons do exist. 3.The use of positioning skills is arguably less important in guild wars 2 in pve overall than it is in PVP. But there are various situations where using the right movement skill at the right time is also critically important in GW2 PVE, either in combat or as part of certain encounter mechanics. 4.You seem to have used one of the most mobile/movement focused classes in Tera as an example, which is fine since you were looking for something on the extreme end of the spectrum. But it is probably good to keep in mind that this IS at the extreme end of the spectrum for Tera, and that while the other classes have their own types of mobility they don't really compare to the warrior in the way they play. There have been some other games which change your attacks depending on the direction you are pushing when you execute the attack and which part of the attack chain you are in, or allow you to combo different attacks together as different chains. I think these kinds of mechanics can also make MMO combat more fun. Unfortunately they also have the side affect of making lag an even greater factor, so depending on your location this can be something of a double edged sword.

You can read the Warrior guide for more info. Pounce is the skill being used, which has a hitbox that extends slightly to the side and behind of the player (does fit with the sword swing, just looks wierd), making it ideal for that specific use. While the crab's hitbox extends out to its claws and legs. The important part is that this is consistant and based on the interaction of hitboxes moving in the world, not simply an animation which plays after the server decides you've dealt damage.

Agreed 100% with everything you said. You should try to get yourself a Blade & Soul account, mate. In terms of combat, it's somewhere on the line between GW2 & Tera, using your examples. In terms of every other type of system, it's an extremely polished experienced. Their UI, character creation, in-game social system, in-game screenshot managers, broker, questing, dialog, talent system, and tutorial systems are all uniquely superb to the genre.

I'm surprised you're the first to pick up on that, as I didn't use that control scheme when I actively played TERA, I used to flick the camera 180 to do that. It's the gamepad 'attack in facing direction' option. I'm not using a gamepad, but by plugging a gamepad in you're able to access an option which allows you to choose the direction of all of your attacks by pressing directional controls and a button at the same time, which then works with mouse+KB. I got used to it in Vindictus.

This is a great video and I think I learned much about myself. I think the main reason why I've always felt uncomfortable in combat for GW2 and terra is because I don't actually want action combat, even though I did at the time. I actually like the combat system(whatever it's called) in wow because it's less action oriented. I can see why someone like yourself and others who are into action combat would deviate away from WoW. I'd love to hear about your thoughts on Wildstar.

Just wondering, what part of the footage at 9m mark contradicted anything about his comments on wow? You can see the weapons passing through the crab and the crabs attacks missing his character. In wow he would have been hit every time but in tera he was missed by all of the attacks because he was not there. Pretty sure you are just trolling for attention with nothing to back you up.

In Tera, how is it you're able to aim your attacks independent of you camera facing? For example, you use Rising Fury to move to the left or right, but your camera is facing forward. When I use Rising Fury, no matter what direction my character is facing, the attack always moves in the direction of my camera :/ i can't seem to find an option to change this.
@acolyterush10 жыл бұрын
This is an option for Gamepads that you can enable by going into the controller menu. You then chuck the pad and use a mouse+KB with unlocked aiming.

Ah, no wonder I couldn't find it. Thanks Edit: For those who don't have access to a controller, you can use Vjoy virtual joystick. Google it, pick the headsoft website link. At the bottom of the page, download the one that says (Includes key to joy application), install it, go to system tray, right-click the icon, and open it. Set "button 9" to a free key (i use = ), that'll be your "select" key that brings up controller options.

The heartbeat generated quest and no requirement to seek quest giver.. Yep I'm hooked. You hit the nail on the head there, a few times. Combat feedback in WoW was actually pretty good, and playing TERA as an ex-WoW gamer you have to get used to the new possibilities. The sense of hitting in TERA is also unmatched, which is why I never had more fun in a starter area than in TERA's, despite it being way too easy. P.S.: Gotta give props again for finishing a fight in GW2 with no damage taken, which is almost impossible.

All classes in TERA have mobility specific mechanics. He mostly showed the Warrior which is arguably THE most mobile class. Mystics have teleports forward, Archers, Priests, and Sorcs have leap backs, Lancers and Berzerkers have the least amount of mobility but they also can simply block attacks with their weapons and/or have solid skills that often knock down mobs, so mobility is less of an issue. Slayers have a tumble forward (and a leap back). So, yes. Mobility is available on every class.

This is grossly disingenuous argument. You're hitting a level 6 scorpion outside of ogrimmar. Wow's combat is a lot more methodical. Movement isnt entirely fluff, you cant dodge/parry/block when you're not facing a target, there are dead zones, you cant cast in someone's face. Movement has less meaning in WoW because its not as reactionary compared to Tera. I prefer the former because I like rpg mechanics more than the hack n slash gameplay that action rpgs bring which eventually becomes spamming abilities, running mobs down and dodging basic telegraphs. If I wanted to play an action hack n slash, I rather play metal gear revengence, they're just totally different combat systems.

It seems a rare thing in the gaming industry where a person says it how it is, not how they perceive or wish it to be. This video is bob on and strips back all the bollocks we hear about MMO combat. I too have been wishing fork MMOs to leave the stagnant state they've been in and become dynamic, ie if you swing a sword and miss, you miss. I hope soon we will see arms and legs being lopped off goblins in real time and huge attacks carving trees down etc (like in EQN). The problem is there are lots of players who fear these changes because that means the system they've been coveting for the past ten years is gone and they need to learn a new one, scary shit :) Excellent video, maybe you should become a game developer mate?

This video really explains the differences in combat very well. Although I wouldn't say combat in Tera is "better" then in WOW. It's different and it's great that more and more of these type of games come out. But I don't see it as a complete replacement of the WOW type of games, there will still be people that like target selecting games better. Just as there are people that like TBS better than RTS. Some people like to chill when playing a game.

Modern MMO's are integrating more mechanics and flashy gameplay that makes more sense. When WOW was first released this type of gameplay was not possible. In my opinion the modern style is much more enjoyable, immersive and fun that the WOW mechanics. Comparing these games is wrong as they are from very different times in video gaming. However, if people was a more casual fighting experience they should go play hearthstone.

+bladewolf VII there are many ways on how you can avoid/dodge/evade enemy attacks aside from anticipating then moving out. yes it is correct to use appropriate skills as an escape mechanism since dodging has cd/uses either mana/resolve. it's like using those skills to juke/fake enemy champs in LoL. it's a matter of how you incorporate your skills in the combat system but you can learn more once you do pvp and asking good pvpers/pvers tips in game to help you out. :)

Are we sure that everything in GW2 is a just a conal aoe attack? It wouldn't seem it should be so reliable to sidestepped attacks if they were conal to such a degree. Also, GW2 dungeons are good, but the bosses are (mostly) not. Basic encounter-to-encounter combat makes fights interesting and active. Simple boss designs take away from that. And do Tera classes other than Warrior and Archer really have the same mobility? My experience with the other melee classes was less than compelling.

So u either end up paying huge amount of money to get the best gear in 2-3 months if u have a good party which will let you take the materials dropped in dungeons, or you spend a year of your life getting the gear and then the devs bring out new best gear and u have to grind again. And after u get the gear there is nothing more to do.

EQN is at a far earlier stage of development than people seem to acknowledge, you really can't put it in the same category as TESO. So far there is nothing to show other than an impression of their visual style, and a lot of talk about vague design concepts that may possibly make it into a retail game at some point. Their world builder is on the way, but i'm guessing the game itself is perhaps 3 years off. I don't know enough about Black Desert to comment on that, and haven't played it.

One game I hope has action combat instead of hotkey spamming is Everquest Next. The game looks amazing and I bet a solid combat system where you have to HIT the enemy would make it gold. Now, I heard it slows down the server on multiplayer, but here is my solution: If you want multiplayer, your restricted to the hotkeys so the server doesn't go crazy. but if you want ACTION combat, play in a singleplayer server! it's the same game, just different combat system and no other players.

I love your video. You actually motivate me to play Tera now but there's just 1 problem with what you've said... Tera sacrifices free movement during attacks in order to achieve a meaning and purpose for every ability in terms of movement. GW2 strikes a great balance where abilities can move you while there's still abilities that you use while running freely. BDO just... does that times 10, but no one really takes BDO seriously for PvP anymore.

If Tera had taken the time to actually add some content to their game it would probably be the top MMO right now. To me Tera has the best combat system of any MMO out right now. +ChrisTeamProdigy The WoW crowd has a skewed perspective on this if they don't have much experience elsewhere. On a macro scale, your movement in WoW in terms of who you're in range of, whether you're LOS'ing behind a pillar etc does matter, but any smaller scale movements do not have impact in the way they have in other games. I've run flags in CPMA CTF, running through people for Rogue backstabs isn't exactly something I struggle with. If you're watching me mouse click the Hemmorage... It's because it's clearer in a video for me to move my mouse pointer over something and visibly click it. Personally I'm not a fan of TERA, I've always found that the game had extremely floaty combat, that as you demonstrated, the "business end" of a weapon does NOT need to connect with an enemy. Where as when you showcase Vindictus, notice how your Tumult blade doesn't deal full damage when executed improperly. I don't know how to explain it, but TERA's combat system has existed in mmo's since 2003, or at least that's when I was First Introduced to RYL. A game in which using as your described, these "AoE hitboxes" simulated something that no one had really seen within the genre before. It was great for what it was, but ultimately it was mismanaged and because of it, they were sued into oblivion and the game was forced to be restructured because of it. I simply don't see TERA as being on the same Tier of combat design as Vindictus, it's too outdated for me.
@GenericName00711 жыл бұрын
Well Tera is not going to bury any MMO, it's not a great game as a whole I simply like the combat system. I also think there's room in the market for both types of systems. I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't enjoy needing to be so active all the time or they just grew up with the "traditional" system so they don't want anything else. Far as what is "action combat" my own opinion is simply a system that allows 1 to 1 to 1 from key press, animation and hit and blows go where you aim

Its failings are everything other than the combat. All of the game elements normally associated with MMORPGs: Questing, crafting, gearing, end game progression, are all weak compared to the behemoth that is WoW. I enjoyed combat in the game while the limited content lasted, and if you haven't played it then I would still recommend trying it just for the combat. But don't expect a polished western MMO.

The big problem I have with Guild Wars 2 is how nearly everything is about Kiting. Tera has some really nice Blocking mechanics, and the tight-hitboxes are an astronomical step up from GW2 in that regard. That being said, I agree Tera is rubbish as an MMO, despite having the closest to my ideal combat style I've seen so far. There's a major flaw in the Tera-style combat, however - while it works well in 1v1, the moment there is more than 1 player on one side it becomes boring. Lacking an interesting rotation, if you find yourself free to nuke (i.e: someone is tanking for you), you will for the most part just spam your most effective skill(s) nonstop. Deodric Buchanan the concept that you only like what you're good at is fallacy, and what he shows in the video isn't bad gameplay.

real time combat vs turn-based combat

The problem is very few people want to play that kind of action combat as a main game. There is a reason why WoW, ESO, and FFXIV are all the top most populated games. It comes down to the fact that action combat is just too stressful. It is fun in short bursts, but the amount of focus you already have in endgame content is already huge, you don't want that all the time. You look at these games and you have these bursts of focus and then these laid back sections in between. You get this short 90% intensity gameplay and then you get a much larger block that of sub 30% intensity gameplay killing trash. It prevents players from getting burned out. In action combat you end up with this 90% intensity all the time when you try to do any content. Even look at your single player RPGS like skyrim. You have action combat, but that is separated out by the travel and talking. Your still spending the majority of your time at the lower intensity points with intense combat then you do more other aspects in the middle. Until an action game gets the intensity aspect nailed down I don't see action combat ever becoming big in an MMO. I don't think action combat will work until we get more VR players. It actually works amazingly well in VR because of the real time aspect, it slows down gameplay so the intensity is actually not as stressful but still somehow manages to feel even more intense than the insanely fast pace of a game like tera.

No. WoW's PvP in previous xpacs was legendary for a reason. Having to watch your footing and enemy's footing in arenas while reacting with the right abilities has its own intensity. MMORPGs have worked that way from the get go and shouldn't disappear.

Skyforge= You can't dodge for shit. All you can do is have "better" gear and kill an enemy first.

That leap away at 9:36 still did damage to the enemy even though you were pointed completely away and not near it. So while your points about dodging and small hitboxes seem good from a player standpoint , they don't seem to apply to the enemies in TERA. If that is the case, it isn't as skillful as it seems you are making it sound.

totally agree and it is one of the reasons Warhammer: Online was so rubbish, the animation and combat was very odd and not satisfying at all

Of the games with more interesting combat that are currently available, it's difficult to recommend any of them as a long term 'Home' MMO, however they are all worth a poke as a curiosity, just for the gameplay. If you're looking for a social world that could support a gaming group and is likely to provide long term content updates and enjoyable, replayable end game, then the next notable game on the horizon is Wildstar. Just don't expect TERA combat out of that.
