Tour this hand crafted wood shop. The transparent shop is small so I had to design everything. As an architect I love beautiful spaces. This is my Zen retreat. This video includes lots of hacks for woodworking storage. A place for everything and everything in its place.

Fitting that you mention negative space in architecture in relation to storage, because the same is true of the importance of negative space in editing. I appreciate the floor plan with camera angles shown, because it can become a little confusing to get a gist of exactly where things are in a workshop. Those indicators and the pause in voice over when showing a tool are important bits of negative space in the video for understanding and processing. It's very well considered.

Rick, I have been an architect here in Mississippi since 1985. Your shop design and tour is one of the more elegant and resolved solutions I’ve seen in a long while. The detailing and shop furniture is well thought out and beautiful. If I’m not mistaken it appears the wall cladding you are using is polycarbonate sheet; just curious about how this space is heated and cooled. My shop is in my 3rd car garage. It’s 18x24, but it’s so packed with tools and machines, it lacks any thread of organization as your shop offers.😂 thanks for sharing, it’s a very inspiring design.

Eric, thanks for the comment! I am getting into the design but in general the shop is intended to be an outside space. The weather is reasonable most of the time in Charlotte so it has no cooling. However I did install a good heater a few years ago. The heater will bring the shop from 30 to 50 deg in a couple hours. I heat the space only when I am in it. Maybe 15 cold winer days a year.

I'm also in Charlotte, but my shop has full-sun exposure above and on South & West sides with paving on the West side and no windows. Love the design of the building and negative spaces. Great workshop. I live in the UK - winter temperature can be an issue (less so with global warming) - had not considered a workshop with glasss walls . . . My workshop has not been built yet -- obviously where its possible to add some joy through the design then go for it. Thank you. Your workshop is like an elegant skeleton clock - simplisticly, two parts - a glass rectangular block and an internal wooden frame - but merged.

Your video is a wealth of great concepts in practice. I learned about negative space years ago designing a server room which is always too small. I then turned it into solving tought experiments where I solve the opposite when I am stuck. My experience with architects and interior designers makes me wonder why they don't get into sound and smells which came to mind when I first saw the image of your shop. However, you clearly nailed it. I bet your space is quieter than many shops while running power tools with the doors and windows open with fresh air clearing it out. Then your mapping of hotspots. You would be fun to work with. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the tour. The openness is amazing and I’d love to work in a shop like it. I’d be scared of my fancier hand tools and likely to build a serious case for them to lock. I have a few military-looking toolboxes with the double lined metal sheets and an articulating latch similar to windows that spans out to locate pins outward. Bolt a few of those to floor. Just for the special, irreplaceable items. The space under he drill press is the only spot and I personally love the Woodsmith drill press cabinet. Seeing how open you made everything is the opposite of cabinets. Whitespace is a big deal to me too but mostly from print and I think of enclosed boxes when woodworking. Nice to see the antonym of closed.

Wow! You pack so much into that "small" shop, yet it feels incredibly spacious. It must be pretty mild where you are. It would be too cold in winter where I live.

Sometimes a little cold and sometimes a little hot, so it goes.

@@kazebeedesign Honestly, growing up in Michigan I have found that the extremes of temperature over the seasons actually has the effect of helping develop physical resiliency and health. If there's anything that can help one deal with cold and heat, it's being completely absorbed in a wood working project! Beautiful shop...I'm jelly!

Such a beautiful shop man, absolutely my style and aestethic. Had to subscribe immediately. When I fell in love in love with woodworking I didn't have access to any indoor space whatsoever so I started building everything outdoors and just tarping everything every night. Finally built me a 8x10 lean to shop with two open ends so the sunshine and hummingbirds could always say hi. Two months after I finished building my shop we lost the house and had to move into a rental. So it was back to tarps for me. We went through one of the worst storm seasons this last year for our area here in Southern California and I escaped with almost zero water damage, I'll chalk that up to a success. Ill always set myself up to work in an open airy space like this in some tandem with the elements. Great stuff man, I feel like anybody that is relegated to a very small shop learns to use every single inch to its utmost potential , just as you said. Multiple uses for everything, folding workspaces on hinges, etc. Best wishes from Cali bro!

Just watched the shop video and immediately subscribed - I haven’t been this excited about a design for my own (eventual) shop in a very long time. For lack of a better term, let’s say your design esthetic really appeals to me. I look forward to your future releases and thank you for sharing your work and your vision. 👍🏼

Love the clear walls and window openings, they complement the "minimalist functional wood-shop" approach. Nice touch with the air cleaning and dust collection. You must have a brush attachment for vacuuming surfaces and corners?

Welp, I found a new inspiration and obsession. I am in love with your design aesthetic and commitment to craft. I was looking at your website, specifically your home, and noticed some long round dowels in the upper area of you living room supported by large gussets on the walls. Are these some sort of lighting element or what are they? I’m located in Michigan and if I could find some land to buy, I would love if you designed my home. I love seeing simple yet beautiful materials allowed to exist instead of our strange obsession with hiding everything possible these days. Very inspiring!
