As a Hawaiian speaker and a researcher of Polynesian culture, I have noticed that there are many similarities between traditional Nahuatl music and Hawaiian/Polynesian music. The teponaztli looks curiously similar to the toʻere drums that are found from throughout the Pacific, including the indigenous communities of Taiwan. The two drums being used simultaneously look is also extremely common throughout Polynesia which uses the toʻere (hollowed drum), and the pahu (standing drums). In Hawaiian music, we add and/or modify words to add a feeling or help with timing, but it has no meaning: Ka ulu kukui o Kalamaʻula --------- Ka ulu kukui o Kalamaʻula . Ka nani o kuʻu one hānau - Ka nani kuʻu one hānau. We do not speak like this, but we commonly make these changes when singing/chanting. The Austronesian people have landed on every shore of the Pacific, and more information is being revealed that we also made it to the continent and intermixed with the people there. There are even legends of gods that dwell in the east. I wouldnʻt be surprised if they were talking about an ancient Mesoamerican society. The information presented in this video is super fascinating, and it makes me want to learn more about Nahuatl. Please keep making more content. Thank you

considering how the spanish have paved over the mesoamerican cultures you have to imagine the kaleodoscopic generic fast-paced latin-american party music and imagine the aztec culture and their instruments making music to this energy... music has changed so much with european conquest and the industrial revolution so you can only imagine the best energy and apply it to general historic knowledge to imagine what it must have been like

Thank you for all your videos. You’re very good at teaching. This video on songs is very interesting. And now I am wondering about Temazcalli’s and songs for that ceremony. Do you have a video that talks about how Aztecs used Temazcalli’s, how often, we’re they an important ceremonies and what songs were sung during a temazcal. My uncles or Lakota and I’ve done a lot of lodges but how do I learn more about a temazcal and the songs? Thank you again.
@thenahuatlchannel389610 ай бұрын
Thanks ! most of the temazcalli were used for medical purposes and spiritual cleansing, but they were often smaller so they were more individual. I'm not sure if anyone had specific songs for them, but it was definitely not necessarily a harsh sweat lodge like teh Lakota's which is quite difficult hehe. It was more of a calm steam bath.

I'm curious to know if the teponastli can produce more sounds than just the two tones by using the sticks or perhaps hands differently. Maybe the -ti -to -ki -ko are actually sounds that describe not just high pitch and low pitch with down/upbeats, but also -ti -to (high pitch with sticks hitting center of drum, low pitch with sticks hitting the center of drum) and -ki -ko (high pitch hitting it with hands/side of drum/sliding, etc, low pitch hitting it with hands/side of drum/sliding, etc). This is what I think particularly also because /t/ and /k/ have similar consonant features, but slightly different "timbre". I like the upbeat/downbeat idea better for its simplicity and more likelihood of being true, but I cant help but wonder about them referring to different sounds/timbres/rhythms. I'll be wondering all day! haha

Ive been having trouble translating the song in xochitl in cuicatl by miktlan tonatiuh I was wondering if you could help me. This is what I hear... In xochitl in cuicatl nitotiani. So as you can see I'm struggling with "nitotiani" "tepaktia" and "itekmatilia". That's how I hear the words. But I'm not sure if I'm hearing them the right way.

ihtotia = to dance. ihtotiani = dancer. They're saying< im a dancer, axkan = now, nitepaktia - i make pple happy, toyolotsin - our heart. moyokoyatsin - your creator, itekmatilia (maybe you are hearing< titechmaktilia, or something with "maktilia" which means "to gift".

Incredible incredible video I can't believe I learned so much in just 15 minutes Do you think it's right to enjoy songs that you described, like the religious songs about ipalnemohuani and ometeotl that are more reflective of Plains music styles, as reflective of our Nahua culture?
