I definitely don’t think the committee was expecting John Denver to advocate for artistry the way he did. I’m so grateful Dee Snider gave him applause, albeit posthumously 😊
@chadhallack9675
@chadhallack9675 3 жыл бұрын
No they just assumed that John Denver would advocate for the censorship and never really vetted any of them they literally picked out d Snyder and Frank Zappa because they thought they would be the best examples they could get of the exact kind of thing they were trying to prove a point against and that John Denver would be the antithesis to that and instead they were all on the same page. John button hooked the shit out of them and it was epic!

In Dees defense, I don’t think anybody really knew about John’s battle with censorship himself with Rocky Mountain High. I think the best part of that hearing is is knowing that John was Tippers ace in the hole. And it backfired spectacularly.

John Denver did not just speak for the hearing against censorship, he placed the onus in general, pertaining to what kind of kids are being raised, squarely where it belongs, on the shoulders of the parents. Listen to every word, right to the end. For some reason YT will not let me post the link. Here is the title. John Denver at PMRC Hearings.

I was 15 at this time and I watched the hearings with my Uncle Bill. He was very interested because he lived through the real fear parents had about Rock & Roll in the 50s. He told me great stories about those days. One was about his father who did not like RnR. His dad's hatred of Little Richard was off the chart. U.B. was told that only Pat Boone versions were tolerated in his house. U.B. wasn't having any of it so he had a "2nd record drawer for his 'forbidden' music that my father never knew about". Together him & my dad saw all the greats of 50s & 60s Rock & Doo Wop. Miss both of them 😪

And yet mainstream "rock pop country" whatever turned their back on JD. John Denver was in a class of his own and these hearings he stood up for all artists. What a shame the music industry treated JD so poorly (shame on RCA for dropping him after so many albums and sales, the whole being rejected by We are the world BS, etc).. And seem to have forgotten John Denver's talent and immense legacy! RIP JD ❤ He deserves better... Time to get JD back!

The PMRC did win, but not in the way a lot of people think. Part of their existence in the first place was not just to help prop up Al Gore's visibility as a presidential hopeful, but also to provide a "moral panic" smokescreen for a tax bill on blank cassette tapes (HR 2911, if memory serves) that the RIAA wanted Congress to pass, basically as a way of making it more expensive for consumers to "pirate" music. And that bill DID pass, so yeah, in that regard, at least, the PMRC achieved its goal. Oh, and one of the bills cosponsors? None other than Al Gore. And part of Zappa's testimony was to point this out, like "we know why you're REALLY doing this, you're not fooling anybody."

The whole taxing blank cassette tapes (see the film) was really a short sighted tactic that had great influence on the PMRC getting dropped too. I dont even think I have a cassette player let alone a blank cassette tape anymore. Its so weird how the govt allows every penny to be squeezed out of its citizens through taxes. That never ends well.

John Denver's picture should be up there with the gods of rock. They should erect monuments in his name if only for what he said that day. His music is amazing, too. I am a big fan of all types of rock, but John Denver made me a country fan by the time I was 5. My dad had a whole bunch of John Denver tapes. Even my grandad, who would have been 114 this year, loved John Denver's music.

It did. The PMRC wanted a rating system that was based on a third party’s interpretation of the songs. Imagine it being 1989 and you wanted to buy Metallica’s new album but were told that due to its nature, you had to be over 18 to buy it. Secondly, the PMRC wanted any song that they deemed “explicit” to not be played on TV. That would have included Twisted Sisters campy but great video “We’re not gonna take it” video.MTV was big back then and there were a lot of knock offs. Lastly the PMRC stated that any band who’s live performances “violated their policies “ would have to have their “contracts renegotiated by their record labels.” So yes, it did help. John Denver’s testimony showed the hypocrisy of the trials

I may have the team wrong but it doesn't matter his point is there ! I remember his speech today more than I can either Zappa's or Snider's. Zappa and Sniper may have been more compelling, but their Testimony was doomed from the start, because the Committee had steretyped them so badly prior to the Hearings that no matter what they had to say, all the Committee saw were two long haired, drug induced "hippies" who were just using words too big for their Vocabulary. The PMRC was waiting for John Denver to blast Snider and Zappa and join their fight; Denver turned right around and pwned the Committee so thoroughly that they couldn't even come up with any coherent Rebuttal to Denver's testimony. John Denver essentially gutted and eviscerated the PMRC with his Testimony.

Looks like the PRMC won. I remember going to the record store in the 90's and seeing parental advisory labels on a few of the albums. Like Dee testified, if you look at the album cover you should be able to determine if there is going to be any offensive content on it. I think that the labels not only insult the intelligence of the purchaser but also harms the reputation of the artist.
