Actually 20 grand seems reasonable considering what anything costs these days. Your home will look and feel so much better and be so much safer and more efficient. Even if you lived on land you would need to do repairs. The difference being of course being able to spread it out over time. Also, you are helping to sustain others with the labor you are hiring. This shows others they can take a boat that's on her last leg and make it really safe and enjoyable for many years with less than 25 grand if they go to the right place. I am excited for the end result!

Good luck with the refit (and bills.. Ouch.). For the Starlink system, I strongly suggest you check users reviews online. There seems to be some serious hardware problem that renders the units unusable (cables and connectors). Consider having spare parts, since you travel around to remote areas. Having the Starlink permanently mounted may also benefit from some research. This seems to have disadvantages on Rvs/Boats. Cheers.

I was checking out a channel called Sailing Vessel Mig and he found a local guy in Washington state that builds some custom small refrigerators just like in a house and uses the sailboats factory icebox. You just need a place to mount the small compressor and parts near the ice box. It would be amazing to have a fridge/freezer like that rather than those little 12volt fridges you see off grid people using. I'm a truck driver and we quit waisting our money on those portable fridges cause they just weren't like having a actual fridge. The guy who built Migs fridge is a one man small business and he said anyone can call him with dimensions and needs and he can build it. Install is super simple.

Hi guys. Good episode on the costs. Similar to us. Regarding the Bimini hard top structure. Consider reinforcing the fibreglass transom (relatively easily glassed from inside) as the fixation on the deck restricts water flow off the deck and it will look a lot better. Sorry had to say it from a 23 year crusader Engineer. PM if you want as have done exactly this. Cheers and see you on the water.
@CalicoSkiesSailing
@CalicoSkiesSailing Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips! We wound reenforcing the transom exactly as you describe. We also moved the transom mounts higher and more outboard to a stronger part of the transom near where it turns into the hull 👍
@johnmccormick2398
@johnmccormick2398 Жыл бұрын
@@CalicoSkiesSailing PM if more details needed. Here in brief. Yes move the transom fixing points towards the outside(up or down not really the issue. WE then reinforced around the area with a 300*300*20 mm ply (shaped to the outside hull) epoxy glued to the transom- no voids! Then two layers of the structural cloth all round after creating a fillet and rounding the top of the ply. Must be fully wetted out of course(if in doubt look up BoatworksToday Utube). For the forward fixings try to fix to the “vertical” sides of the coating if possible as this will be stronger than the deck and not obstruct water running off the deck. Have attached a pic. Oops that did not work 🤔Cheers John McC SV Rukus

Thanks for sharing that info. You were wise to do all that work there and get CS ready for the Pacific. Given many of the issues, you had very little choice but to bite the bullet and do the work. Whilst NZ has great marine skills, we are comparatively expensive. So you're getting damn good bang for your bucks in Mexico.

Not sure what kind of hardtop Bimini you are considering, but I've seen a few being constructed. 6 yrs ago Blogger "This rat sailed" constructed fore and aft supported one for his cat using wood frame for just construction for foam panels and fiberglass unit. Ytubers Jessica & Ryan made one from foam and fiberglass and supported by metal bimini frame. Sailing Parley Revival essentially had a metal bimini frame made and solar panels make up the majority of the hardtop surface. A few others have used 4'x8' PVC panels from HD or Lowes, glued together and attached to metal bimini frame..

@douglasrobbie9998
@douglasrobbie9998 Жыл бұрын
@@CalicoSkiesSailing You posed question about what type of solar panels to use. Personally I like bifacial, especially in a marine environment due to reflected light, but they are big and do weigh a bit more due to extra glass layer, so frame needs to be sturdy. Altestore has some 540w (front surface rating) ones for 61 cents/watt. Santan solar also have some at around the 60 cents/w. Your solar charge controller has to be able to handle the watts and voltage though. I think you have Victron, I used Make Sky Blue 60a one for 640w REC panels in parallel budget catamaran PV setup with good results.

A couple of diagonal braces will do wonders to stiffen up a structure like your davit project. Paralell and perpendicular strucctures tend to be unstable that way. Even small knee braces or gusset plates are very helpful. Good luck!

Guys, you may not remember this in the future, but once you have refurbished all your cabinetry inside the boat, lubricate ALL sliding wood surfaces with candle wax. Just plane old candle wax. Buy a couple of white candles, because they don't have much colour and keep them on board. When any drawer or sliding door starts to stick, give it a wipe out to remove any dirt, then wax the contact surfaces. The wax doesn't discolour because it is basically unseen, and it will make all things run smoothly again. Oh, an I like the plans for the outside of the boat. The Clampetts would be pleased to see such an upgrade!

This might help you. There might be better thread than Gore-Tex now but i had may sails and bimini and everything resewn with it. It's very highly UV resistant and will outlast the the sails or bimini. I got tired of paying for things to be resewn every few years. The sailmaker said the thread would out last the sails. And it was worth the cost to buy the guy that made my new bimini top to buy him the spool of thread. and pay the extra cost for the sails. Totally worth it. I hope this helps.

MASSIVE fan. Just been back and watched all your films. Good luck with the refit. I aim to take up the cruising life asap. Probably in a Moody 38 which will be 30 to 35 years old. Also hope to do a YT channel and love yours. Hope to bump into you one day. Was amazed to see the old pictures you showed. You both look so much happier and healthier now. Loved it when you sailed round Manhattan… sailing into Manhattan is on my sailing list. And hopefully by the time my buddy & I get there the West 79th Street Boat Basin will be reopened and we can get a guest mooring or anchor ball. And stay in Manhattan for a few weeks. I’m from London, but have spent a lot of time in New York area as my dad worked for Citibank. My close friend in the area has just moved to a house in Florida with a dock and access back out to sea. Only hope it’s deep enough.

Hi Julian! Aw, thank you! Happy you found us. Your plans sound exciting, thats a great boat too. There's a good chance we'll run into each other, ha ... we'll be out here! Thanks for your feedback :) Sailing around Manhattan was always a buzz. We actually did it many times because we would do cruising trips down to NJ or even around the outside of Long Island and every time it was exciting. Def something to experience by boat, very diff than being in the city. Bill lived in Cobham for three years during high school days as his Dad had a job over there ... Hes got fond memories of the time spent in England. House with a dock sounds sweet! Sending good energy for your future travels, good luck and thanks for following our journey :)

How to turn a Saber 36 into a Super Saber. I find these video's very educational as you show what it's really like to own a sailboat, not sandy beaches all the time. A lot of work and money go into keeping a boat safe and in good shape. Bill never ceases to amaze me with his electrical/mechanical skills. Could you give a real time up-date, has Calico Skies splashed yet? I can't wait to see the end result.

Good choice on the SS frame. It's is stronger and you don't need a TIG to weld it. Any DC stick machine can fix it. Vacuum seal 5 or 10 pounds of rods and you can repair anywhere. Check out a channel called; Everlanders. He did a nice mount and reduced the cable and connections for his Starlink. It may help you out.

I realize you guys are probably far past this point in reqlbtime but What do you think about doing a hard top Bimini and dodger using a wood frame glassed in and tabbed to the boat? This would provide enough support to put davits up on the roof. Also would look clean like it was part of the boat instead of an add on. My mast came down and destroyed my canvas and stainless frame. Was thinking of doing a bimini/dodger this way
