Philippians 3:12-16. NLT I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you. But we must hold on to the progress we have already made. To me, the terms "press on" and "focus" do call on the human capabilities God has given us. Because we are not yet perfect, we have in the past and probably will in the future fail at times, but these efforts are volitional acts we are called to do as God does His transforming work upon us. It is a struggle to become obedient, but that struggle is evidence that God has not simply replaced our soul in our body with a spiritual automaton that doesn't make mistakes. He values our independent and interdependent soul, seeking not to destroy it because it is flawed, but calling our soul to the destiny He created us for, helping us appropriately all along that journey. I very much believe the Christian life is full of effort, which includes fatigue and failure, which induces proper humility, which fosters in us grace and love and encouragement toward others, and a clearer understanding of the depth of His grace and love toward us.
