Thursday marked a landmark day in the history of the NCAA and College Athletics. The Power 5 conferences and NCAA settled out of court to set up a new model for the future of college sports. Is the Big Ten in a good spot compared to other conferences? What will the future of college football look like?

Doubt they will ever allow players to display advertising on their unis... Some schools will have to drop their FB rosters to 70-60 if they want to continue other sports. Go Ducks

Maybe. But I have seen things happen in college football that people doubted would ever happen, and yet they did (a playoff, payment of players, A change in the transfer rule, a change in the red shirt rule, etc.). I am not saying I like these changes or not. That's for another conversation. But nothing surprises me anymore.

This doesn't eliminate NIL. Teams will pay NIL on top of this price.

The big boys are still going to get those top players, you can't really go up from where they are at. The lower half BIG10 teams will probably see an uptick in recruiting due to a competitive advantage against 80% of the sport.

All this money and we’re still going to pretend these guys are students? It makes the major/minor league baseball system look sane.

It goes both ways. I understand why people are worried but also thinking about the landscape this year, we have 3-4 legit title contenders that probably wouldn't exist without the portal.

Blame the NCAA for that, over a century of pure greed caused this mess

Yep. And neither has college sports up to this point. But it won't be long before everyone realizes none of this has anything to do with going to college. There'll probably eventually be a minor league for the NFL to just start drafting kids outta high school.

It is amazing in this time of equity that college football & basketball is still capitalistic and moving toward oligarchy. PS. I am a poor person who believes in capitalism as my children are escaping being poor (with fond memories of adventures that the rich cannot have).

School cap is one thing but if you still get to have alumni sweeten the pot with NIL then it won’t bring parity because it just eliminates the title nine lawsuit threats because now the players are employees of the school.

Will players be signing contracts, and how will that work with the transfer portal?

It could be the solution to all these transfers from year to year. Seems fair enough if they're gonna give these kids big-boy money then the athlete should have to sign a big-boy contract that states you have to stick around for a few years.

Also, it’s going to be fucking hilarious when the players get an income tax bill for damn near as much or more than what the school is paying them As soon as they are paid directly, all benefits are taxable, scholarship, room, board, books etc.

@bigtented Good insights, I agree with much you said. However, I'm wondering about this being open up to contracts. Which then means we'll need parent or guardian signatures, can you put into a contract you will be receiving this money as long as you are committed to this University for 2-3 years. And maintain a GPA of. Just like we would say for a scholarship. And then how legitimate can these contracts be. Does this then open up agents to step into the college market to represent their clients on all levels? And then for title nine, is it judged to be a spreading of butter? As we normally thought of it over all these years. It was not designed for money.

I'm curious how contracts with the players as independent contractors would work. That I'm still trying to figure that out, but that may be the sweet spot.

Outside of title 9, everything you described mostly already exists in some form or fashion. This will just expedite a more consensus baseline around it for all programs. VERY curious how each school chooses to distribute these funds. That will be a very interesting thing to follow.

This will lead to parity, which is a good thing.
