Thanks Geoffrey. I always appreciate your rural commentary videos. You really have to wonder who’s side our policymakers are actually on. I am always sceptical when I hear “We will spend a curtain amount of money” for transition of new policy. It’s always so vague with no projected outcomes or practical alternatives. Thanks for sharing a little of how you are making your meat products marketed for a premium making the small farm viable.

Our federal government can’t even commit to carbon emissions zero. But they’re happy to set an end date for sheep? We needed a transition goals like 50% and 75% boxed sheep meat exports then set an end date. And a commitment to the wool industry too

Hi Dave, I am glad you liked the video. Unfortunately the country no longer has any policy makers. They are all in the city’s now and have no rural experience. When I read how the money was actually being spent it amazed me that there was no actual plan for transition, just some money to come up with some ideas. Thanks from Geoffrey

Exactly, the live export helps put a base price in the system. It impacts the entire market including the eastern states.

Hi, thanks, I am glad you liked it. I haven’t had a chance to watch yours yet, but I will make sure I go and find it soon. We all need to try and get this information out to the city folk, so good on you for making one too. Thanks from Geoffrey

%100 for live export of sheep and cows, some country's want the animals live so they can process them themselves. I'm all for Australian abattoirs, but live export doesn't need to stop, sheep are well cared for on the boats there have been a lot of upgrades to the boats. People thought all sheep were treated badly when that animal cruelty group peta paid the staff to treat the sheep bad to push their own agenda.

Here in the Netherlands exporting live stock has been banned decades ago. I was born across a live stock transporting company. In my mind I can still hear the trucks warming up early in the morning as they where loading up fuel for their long journey. Some companies didn't survive the change. At the time that it all took place I was too young to fully understand what it all meant for the people. But I can't imagine that anyone wants to go back to the old situation. It wasn't pretty.

There's a small business here in SA called "Farmer To Fridge" that's creating a platform to help Farmers sell meat directly to consumers. I'm not sure if they're a solution to your problem, but that might be a possible market for some of your sheep and cattle? It doesn't solve the issues with abattoir access, etc, but it might help your direct sales initiative. I'm on their Facebook group, and there always seems to be plenty of interest from people in WA.

Hi Jim, we are looking at signing up with farmer to fridge. There is a whole bundle of red tape that we need to work out befor we can sign up with them, so at the moment we are working threw all that. They look like they are doing a good job marketing for people. Thanks from Geoffrey

@@brookdalefarm7986 I had no idea of the amount of red tape that was involved in a farmer selling their own meat until I started following Farmer To Fridge, quite unbelievable! I've used their platform to buy meat a couple of times, and I've always been impressed with the quality. It's nice to spend money where it'll support the farmers doing the work, instead of supporting supermarkets too! F2F are very active on social media, and their posts often seem to get a bunch of "What about WA?" comments, so hopefully it works out for you!

Again the farmers are at the mercy of decision makers, it sounds good to the general public processing in Australia and providing jobs but not thought through properly as to implementing it.

Hi, yes it always seems to be that way. I would love to seem far more meat and other animal products processed locally, but it is so hard to get all the approvals to build the processing facilities. Thanks from Geoffrey

Back in 2005 the then Prime Minister John Howard along with New Zealand suspended live sheep exports to the Middle East. New Zealand never resumed live exports but with careful planning and marketing have increased boxed mutton and lamb sales into that market. So it can be done! If Australia had gone down that path then all the processing facilities would be in place. Instead the government bowed to the lobbying of Australian farm groups and resumed the live export trade and has had numerous suspension since over welfare issues. This thing about cultural issues about the way the meat is processed is also a load of b/s. During the live export ban in 2011 the Australian public were also told this which was proved wrong when the Indonesian government started to import frozen boxed buffalo meat from India as the Australian beef prices were too high. Currently the live export sheep are processed in the Middle East using cheap Bangladeshi labour employed under slave like conditions and then exported all around the Mediterranean. The current Government has said at the last two elections that they were going to phase out live sheep exports but nobody got off their arses to do anything about it. Thanks for the video Old Mate. PS Sheep prices are not crash hot in New Zealand also

Hi John, yes we can defiantly move away from live export, it’s just the package that the government has put together to help the transition dosent seem to address the infrastructure shortage we have here to process the animals and sell as frozen meat. Hopefully the sheep price picks up a bit over there soon. Thanks from Geoffrey

Hey Geoffrey Thanks for your reply. Did you see Landline today. Some farmers are already making the change and one farmer cooperative processing plant is already making planes to increase it’s processing capacity. The chairman said they can export more boxed mutton than they can supply in the current market

Beef seems to be more popular than mutton for local market.its ashame that shop prices of mutton are very high compareded to what it makes for the supply line..local on farm butchers is good way to value add to produce

to put the size of the live export market into perspective, $77 million is only minimum wage for 1500 people
