What Does the Oncotype DX Test Show Doctors About Your Colon Cancer?

All colon cancers are not created equally. Doctors have been labeling cancers in stages, stage one being the least aggressive and stage four the highest, for many years. The Oncotype DX colon assay lets doctors look at the cancers genes in order to predict how the cancer will react to therapy.
Dr. Fadi Braiteh tell us that the test helps doctors decide if they should treat their patients with stage 2 colon cancer or not. Doctors use the results of the Oncotype DX colon assay to predict the risk of recurrence each patient has. For some patients the trouble of surgery or radiation treatment is too great considering the nature of the disease. Those patients may be placed on active surveillance until the cancer changes.
Dr. Fadi Braiteh earned his medical degree in 1998 from Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon. He completed his internal medicine internship and residency at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. From 2003-2009, Dr. Braiteh completed three fellowships -- medical oncology, phase I drug development and palliative care and symptom management -- at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
