Tiki and Cloud are pretty good at keeping the livestock safe, they are like babysitters to the young calves. When our dog decided to chase them, we supervised to see how they react. He was safe, had plenty of trees to hide behind and this is not a routine practice. www.picklecreekranch.com

I had absolutely no idea that donkeys are used as protection for livestock...how fascinating!!! Any time I've seen donkeys, they're either walking or just standing still. It was so cool to see them tear across the field like the little horses that they are. Both dog and donkeys appeared to enjoy themselves, nobody was terrorized, and I got to view donkeys in a whole new light. Love this!!

Laying back the ears has got NOTHING to do with dynamics. It's partly an aggressive gesture (to show you mean business), and partly simply safety first, you don't want your ear bitten off, do you? Cats, dogs, donkeys and horses all do it.

It’s good to see a video showing the true purpose of donkeys on a farm. I saw a video of a farmer with a Llama used for the same purpose. This Llama would patrol the boundaries at night and alert the farmer about any trespassers. It was amazing. I prefer donkeys myself. They don’t spit!
@Kayenne54
@Kayenne54 2 жыл бұрын
Alpacas are also used for the same purpose. But always TWO alpacas. One Llama is cruel. They're herd animals themselves, and need one of their own kind for company. Alpacas are extremely smart.

We have two gelding horses and a mule. The mule is DEFINITELY more territorial. He will chase coyote's, neighbors dogs, even deer out of his pasture. Donkeys and Mules will stomp a mudhole into canines. When my son and I camp out on the back side of our property, we put "Tank" (The mule) in a corral near the campsite. He always alerts us to the presence of coyotes.

donkeys are good at defending themselves. they're small but strong and loud. they can be quite fierce to a hungry coyote. also I don't know why there is so much butthurt about the dog being in danger. he would've only been hurt if he bit one of the donkeys, and he knew not to get too close. also the donkeys didn't intend to harm him but to drive the dog away. so please don't blame the owners for training their donkeys to protect their livestock. this IS what donkeys are supposed to do.
@cherylintexas
@cherylintexas 6 жыл бұрын
We really don't allow him to run around them much. We felt he would be safe since there were so many trees to dodge behind. He really doesn't want to hurt them - this is play to him and if he had been in danger we would have called him off. Plus, the donkeys know he is not a true threat but they do get irritated with his barking!

I don’t mean it as anything racial. I was told it’s an old “Italian farmers trick” to tie a donkey to a stubborn horse that gives you a hard time being broken. You tie the stubborn horse to the donkey and he will fight and spit and snort and the donkey will just stand their and look at the horse like he is stupid. Eventually when the horse runs out of steam and the donkey decides he wants the grass at the other side of the paddock the horse learns real fast he ain’t in charge and that donkey will do all the teaching to respect what leads you. :). I don’t know where the Italians got credit or why but it’s brilliant and it can or has worked. I never saw it with my own eyes but my mother always had donkeys including some minis. Amazing animals and the baby’s. Especially the minis are so f’n adorable.......

My mammoth jennet does the same. She and our biggest dog spent so much time chasing around the pasture, they would stop and nap alongside each other, but make no mistake. Any other dog or coyote who entered her pasture would be trampled and then tossed by a grab to the neck from her. Neighbor dogs learned quickly and coyotes and fox never enter her pasture. She is my soul donkey, bought from a kill shipper.

One of the few things I know about one of my grandfathers is that he loved his donkey like a close friend. In his remote village and during his time, his donkey was the only method of transport for olives and fruit to return back to home and market. I imagine you have to create that bond when it’s just you and the animal, out for hours and by yourself. Seeing a couple of these videos recently has helped me understand how special they are and the burdens they have reduced . Of course I am reminded of my grandfather each time, and in another life, I would like to have a donkey too!
