In this video I discuss what EQ's I use when mastering and why. Having some of the world's best mastering EQ's to hand is a huge luxury we have here at Audio Animals. But each EQ has it's own unique purpose in the mastering chain.

Have you ever used Avalon AD2077? In Japan it’s really a popular mastering EQ. Would love to hear what you think.

I've never been a huge fan but that's not to say it isn't good. Just not my cuppa tea.

As always, I thank you and congratulate you for the clarity of your explanations, it really is "incredible", without using a computer you pleasantly explain things that others cannot (only fireworks!). I hope you remember to make the video you mentioned about limiters, I'd love to hear from you about that topic, and few talk about it. A hug,

Yes this one is on my list to review. With the plugin version coming out soon I want to directly compare it to the software emulation also.

i would love to get Goly, or maselec, but i cant afford it at the moment. Not sure if you know about this Heritage Audio SYMPH EQ Master Bus Stereo @ $1500 , if so wondering if it serves justice for mastering in the meantime that work up to get the Goly or Maselec etc? Thank you

It is a good EQ but it wouldn't be your mastering EQ or an EQ that works with everything. You will find it has a specific purpose in your chain. I would recommend a Goly PG as it is a high end EQ that is very cost effective. Better off saving for something that is going to be used for everything rather than something that is just time to time in mastering.

@@AudioAnimalsStudioThank for your reply,the only reason heritage it caught my attention bc people are praising its high end, and it got M/S which I am lacking in my analog chain, although i do own a drawmer 1974 which sounds great, But I totally agree with going the Goly PG route, or also considering the HD250! it makes total sense to get a high end one for long term, and it also looks attractive! Again thank you for the tip! Regards!!

Most Mastering Engineers are 95% in the box when it comes to real processing, and they use outboard gear like the Manley EQ you just mention as a color box and not to do much, because the plugins we use today are really good, specially if you get a good mix where you have to do very little to it, know when it comes to dynamic EQ vs compression, I walkways use dynamic EQ even when i'm not compressing, the reason being is that you want to help the final limiting stage so it doesn't have to work hard on some parts of the spectrum, so if you have an area that's interacting with the limiter you can tame it by gradually smoothing out that part, basically a dynamic EQ uses time constants to respond to the changes in amplitude, it can also be used as a de-esser or also can be use as an expander to bring parts of the spectrum that might need vibrance.

No one or the other is better. Analogue has huge pros and so does digital. The best setup is a hybrid setup.

I noticed you didn’t mention the Massive Passive?? Is there something about it t hat doesn’t work for you? Is it an eq you’d recommend for mastering??
@AudioAnimalsStudio
@AudioAnimalsStudio 2 жыл бұрын
I've never been massively impressed with the massive passive. It's a good EQ nothing wrong with it. I just prefer different EQ's. If someone wanted to give me one I'd happily have it and use it. I just feel there are better EQ's to buy for that price.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio fair enough. I got the opportunity to get one at a price close to the HCL Thermos. In your opinion would I be better off going for the Thermos??
@AudioAnimalsStudio
@AudioAnimalsStudio 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrStax2010 bearing in mind it's second hand and Thermos is new. It's a touch one. But I'd probably say if the Manley is in good condition get that. They are two different flavours. I personally prefer the Thermos.

@@AudioAnimalsStudio thank you so much for your expert opinion. It’s very much appreciated. Love the vids very informative and educational. Oh one last question do you use any valve based eq’s or are all of yours solid state??
@AudioAnimalsStudio

@@MrStax2010 I'm not massively keen on valve based EQ's which is why I don't use any.
