Having been a teenager in the '70's, there were many concerts I attended (and it didn't cost much either, not like today by a long shot). A few of the more memorable ones were The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Yes, Jethro Tull, Alice Cooper, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Robin Trower, Mahogany Rush, Kansas and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. And let us not forget The Chieftans! Started riding in 1971, and I still have my '73 Yamaha 500 that I bought for my 19th birthday. One big negative on early 70's bikes, though, is that stock suspension sucked, especially shocks. But I agree with you on learning on an analog bike; in fact, all of my bikes are analog. Traction control on my Daytona is the right wrist. Modern bikes are amazing, though; I rode a Ducati V4S, and the clutchless shifting (up or down) was incredible (as were the brakes, never needed more than one finger). Power and acceleration were otherworldly! I had to cancel my planned trip to Barber Motorsports Park for the California Superbike School two-day camp I'd signed up for before all the recent craziness, now I'm planning on doing it in August in Virginia, looking forward to experiencing a BMW S1000RR on a track!
@LuckyLukeRides4 жыл бұрын
I was looking forward to your comment Mark, I knew you'd have some stories about the classic Rock bands but wow, I didn't expect that much. What a long list of experiences that I'm insanely jealous of!! I agree, older bikes must've have bad shocks, technology has helped in a big way there. Does the Yamaha 500 still run? What's clutchless down shifting like? I'd imagine weird... can't imagine it being smooth either. Sorry to hear you had to cnacel that Superbike school trip. The track day sounds awesome though! Make sure to get some footage. I'd love to see it :)
@triumphrider97964 жыл бұрын
The Yamaha is currently undergoing rebuild, has 124,000 miles on it (if you want to see a pic, it's in a video on 2WheeledRider's channel, one of his "Mail Time Monday" vids, I think it's #5, possibly #7 in that series; the photo is from 2009, it's the most recent one I have). But yeah, it was still running but the head gasket was leaking so I tore it down, going to re-paint or powder coat the frame and get the other paint re-done too, it'll be better than new when finished, it's getting a Race-Tech treatment for the fork like I did with the Bonnie). I've modified the hell out of that bike, couldn't afford a new one for so long, it was cheaper to rebuild the old one! I didn't even mention how many times I'd seen some bands; Black Sabbath was the first one I ever saw live, opening band was Humble Pie; a later show, Blue Oyster Cult opened. Didn't mention Rush either, but I only saw them this century! And there was one show that was the strangest combination I ever saw, the opening band was Earth, Wind and Fire (incredibly good); second act was ZZ Top (not well known then) and the headliner was Uriah Heep! The clutchless downshifting on the V4S has to be experienced to be fully appreciated; it is utterly seamless, the electronics match revs faster than you could blip the throttle! But yeah, it's an odd thing to do when you're so used to how it's normally done. I really did want to do the Superbike School at Barber, but doing it VIR was my second choice anyway, I hear it's a great track (and at least a day closer to home and only a few hours from some fantastic roads in southern VA, NC and TN). Not sure I can get video (don't have a camera), I'll have to check and see if any is provided. I know there are YT vids from the school, probably from different tracks. And somehow I never saw the Rolling Stones live (only caught them on the old Ed Sullivan Show on TV in the early 60's, he also had The Beatles on, everybody played that show back then). Never seen U2 either and only saw Springsteen fairly recently (after "Magic" came out, amazing show). I could go on but I've already rambled on!

I agree about the late 70's early 80's as regards music at least. I was 20 in 1979. Not so sure about motorbikes back then though. I love the modern tech of the present day bikes, helmets and gear. Heated grips, abs, built in sat nav and bluetooth helmets. Its a lot safer and more comfortable to ride in bad conditions these days. I became a garda biker in 86 and my first personal bike in 1990. The gear was useless and you suffered in bad weather. Even in 2000 when I bought a new Suzuki Bandit 600 the gear was still not up to much and rider aids were unheard of so its a lot better now.

Some interesting stuff there luke. You mentioned war times and bikes. My partners first bike was a royal Enfield. Not an old one but anyway, still cool bike. Was a kick start. Nearly broke her back kick starting it. I learned to ride on it. The history behind them is interesting. They made a 125cc one during WW2 that was nicknamed the flying flea because they parachuted them into war zone areas and used by the soldiers. Made 🤔😂
