I disagree when you said this was a movie Andy would've watched simply because: A. The aesthetics are contemporary NASA-punk B. The dialogue is way too naturalistic and modern C. Zero aliens D. i really enjoyed lightyear but just felt that it could've been...more? like there were so many interesting themes it introduced that i would've been more interested in it exploring. like, who ARE the space rangers? what mission had they all been returning from? how does all of these people being born from a entire generation of space soldiers impact them as people? like one of the main characters was scared of space! that was super interesting! who formed the original space rangers? why are they just making a whole new group of space rangers on their planet now without returning to buzz's og home base planet to like. regroup? i know it's a children's movie, obviously, so they didn't really NEED to explain this stuff, but it seems interesting to me. sidenote: i literally watched this movie in a empty theatre with my family so i think it's funny op got a full theatre.

At the end of the film they no longer have the crystal, or the formula to recreate it. They are unable to return to the "og planet". I really liked the scene where whenever Buzz came back from testing the ships, he'd miss out on years of time spent that he never got to see. His friends getting married, starting a family, and having a life. And the end Buzz comes to realize what he's spent decades working on would erase all memories spent on the new planet. Critiques I have though is that the side characters should've been given a little more personality, and that Buzz's personality doesn't fit the one he had in the films. But I do get that having a cocky himbo as a main character would be annoying af

Your thoughts on this movie echo mine pretty closely, but I’d go so far as to say this movie shouldn’t have been animated at all. Had they given us a Cheesy 90’s live action sci-fi action movie, complete with period correct visuals, I would’ve been far more lenient on it.
@forzaflash
@forzaflash 2 жыл бұрын
I personally loved it, I think it was solid, although I very much agree with most points, especially with the lack of risks they took for the visuals, both in a space movie and for a Pixar movie. Animation quality was amazing don't get me wrong, it's the art style that I had hoped could use some more, but whatever haha As for Buzz though, I actually found him quite interesting, I'll avoid comparing him to other Pixar characters, because it is evident he'd be lacking. Just in the movie alone he really is the only actual character... If I stick to the movie, I found his journey quite interesting, I was not expecting them to make Buzz so... obsessive. I had not seen many trailers to go in as blank as I could, I didn't even know why they were on the planet they were, so him being as laser focused as to not lose himself in failure felt quite unique, given I'd assume they'd play him more Captain America (and not because of Chris Evans). He carries a lot of guilt, struggles with the notion of failure and has to do everything himself... As Karsten said, fairly cookie cutter don't get me wrong, but I liked it. Not having a short before it was a sin tho Oh and I didn't think at all I'd end up liking Sox, I simply didn't expect him to be much other than a cute thing for the movie, but he's awesome :D *SPOILERS STARTING DOWN HERE* He's so obsessive in fact that he became Zurg, which I also found neat given how Buzz worked across his movie, I wondered about who he'd be, and I honestly felt a bit dumb that I didn't connect the idea that he would be Zurg, again, given Buzz really is the only character in the movie. I simply assumed he'd be more of like... a rookie turned evil or something and it was just another metaphor for his lack of teamwork or what not. I do wonder... with Buzz's arc complete, how will Zurg be a challenge in a sequel should they fulfill the teaser? I guess we'll see.

This film doesn’t make you feel anything significant? That’s such an interesting point of view to me, because I had the complete opposite reaction to it. My girlfriend and I went to go see this movie together and she was absolutely SOBBING within the first 20 minutes (if you’ve seen the movie, you likely know which scene I’m talking about) this then made me cry, just looking over and seeing streams of tears running down her face. Having such an emotional moment so early on in the movie kind of helped rope me into the rest of the movie and from there on out I was along for the ride. Honestly, for me personally…someone who grew up loving Toy Story and Buzz Lightyear, it was a really fun ride. One that I kind of wish I could relive but I know it wouldn’t be the same as the first time I saw it.

The main theme and core message (a lack of self-forgiveness not only leads to self-destruction but it may also lead you to judge the people around you by the same absurd standarts of perfection) is really good. Too bad that the writing just... falters. And that for a movie who's main premise is being a fake 80s/90s movie it really doesn't feel like one at all. Maybe the tone...? but the writing and cinematography and overall art direction feels like any 2010s scifi movie honestly. A friend of man said it felt like a *remake* of the movie that Andy would've watched back then, and I completly agree. Others suggested several ideas on how to improve it... I for one wish Zurg was... well, lets just say he should've been more of a Darth Vader, maybe even Skeletor - a little more dramatic, maybe even cartoonish. I feel they could have executed the same themes around this kind of villain without sacrificing his Villain Persona like it was. Plus it would fit wayy more with the way those characters were portrayed in the Toy Story movies.

I haven’t done a ton of research on this movie, so I’m genuinely curious- for those who have seen it, what is the point of this movie existing? They established in the first Toy Story that any backstory for Buzz Lightyear doesn’t matter because he’s literally just a toy. Does this movie do anything to earn its existence, or does it feel more like it’s just milking the Toy Story franchise?

It very much does. The movie is basically an origins to the Star Command cartoon series. And you get to see how it all builds up to it. Everything from the armor to the corporation itself. As an avid fan of Toy Story as a kid, this was a real treat to see. I feel like I understand the character more and we got a glimpse of the real man behind the legend. It was a fun and surprisingly tragic story with a very heartfelt message at its core.

It isn't supposed to be related to Buzz Lightyear as the Toy Story toy character from his original appearances, this is about the fictional character he used to think he was supposed to be in the originals. Remember that _"Buzz Lightyear to the rescue"_ and _"Star Command"_ stuff Buzz was talking about when we first saw him in Toy Story ? Those were catchphrases based on the character from the movie where he came from, and a movie about the real Space Ranger Buzz was already made. It's called Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command, and Lightyear is basically the same movie, but the story is told differently.

The thing that rly bummed me out about this movie was how they did Zurg. It was previously established that zurg was buzz’s dad… and now he’s just buzz? Makes no sense. And that made zurg less of a good villain in my opinion, and his character has nowhere to grow since they are clearly making a second film with that end credits scene.

Watch 2000’s Buzz Lightyear of Star Command - it was a made for TV movie, directed by the same people who did Aladdin 2 & 3, and would later go on to make Kim Possible. The voice acting cast is stacked, the story is simple but charming, the characters are both funny and likable - for what it is, it is of surprising quality! I watched it recently and felt it was definitely is still worth a watch today!

As someone who basically was Andy because I was 12 when I first saw Buzz Lightyear in 1995, I still remember Woody climbing up the bed and our first glimpse of Buzz clearly. Right from then I was a fan of Buzz, even now heading into my 40s just about, I'm still a Buzz Lightyear fan. LIGHTYEAR in my opinion didn't disappoint, sure I'll agree it may have been better with John Lasseter and I personally think that Brad Bird would have done phenomenal, but LIGHTYEAR was still a great movie. Not only are there ample amounts of references to Toy Story, there are enough references to the whole sci fi genre to make anyone geek out about, Star Wars, 2001, Alien, Starship Troopers, other cartoons like Galaxy Rangers, just to name a few. People need to remember that this is LIGHTYEAR 1, not Toy Story 5. This is not a Toy Story movie, its it's own movie. And I call it LIGHTYEAR 1 because I think it was just the introduction (like the intent behind Buzz Lightyear of Star Command The Adventure Begins) it's just to introduce all of the characters, I believe the real Buzz Lightyear action would be in a sequel or series on Disney+. The ending of LIGHTYEAR is the beginning to what Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story is living out in his head. Plus the reveal of Zurg opens up 2 new story arcs. And personally I think LIGHTYEAR far exceeds Luca and Turning Red, especially Turning Red lol.

The message that this movie accidentally pushed really bothered me. The characters constantly make mistakes and win out of luck, they are so unlikable because of how stupid they where. When Morrison makes a life threatening mistake they respond by saying that it’s okay and it was “just an accident”, when buzz says that he should be better they respond by looking at him as if they said something wrong. After the entire movie where they continue to be incompetent and mess up lightyear chooses them instead of the professional soldiers. Instead of choosing the trained people he picks his group because of a personal connection to them despite them being terrible at their job the entire runtimes. No no no please. Rubbed me the wrong way.

To be a box office blockbuster today, a movie has to get repeat viewings...a lot of them. That happens with box office blockbusters today within the first weekend. Hundreds of thousands of people do rewatch such hits within the first weekend. People even leave the theater and get right back into the ticket line. Lightyear isn't that movie. It's "okay." It's "fine." But it's not that much fun. It's not a movie that people are going to leave the theater and get right back in the ticket line to watch again. Moreover, Disney has rather shot itself in the foot with Disney+. Taking the family to the theater can be an expensive proposition these days, and the economy isn't that great. The audience for this movie is already paying for Disney+, and they know the movie is going to Disney+ within a couple of months. They may go to the theater once (if at all) for the big-screen experience...but only once.

Honestly, I enjoyed this film more than I thought. I thought it was going to be like really really bad, but to me, it was great! Sure, not that much emotion, but I think this was more a action film without too much emotion; something like Transformers is, and for that, it made it an amazing movie for me. I expected action, I got action; I did not expect outstanding cinematography, but I got it; I don't know why I didn't anticipate robots, but there they were and made it so much fun. To me, this feels more Pixar than Soul, Luca, and Turning Red. Pushing the limits of what CGI can do. Something along the lines of WALL-E.

Its a common theme to trick viewers with nostalgia for characters to go to the theatre or watch the show these days, to only bait and switch ya while they break down the cannon lore or replace them with unknown younger actors and actresses for demographics, or change the lore or respect for the character entirely. Its common now. . Look at Joker movie, for example, star wars, star trek, marvel, etc. they all do it.

I actually argue that this Buzz Lightyear is more human... I know I'm comparing this Buzz to a toy, but the Toy Story Buzz had a more dramatic personality while this Buzz feels more grounded. My issue though is the premise, it was advertised as an "origin" story for Buzz Lightyear the character but it doesn't feel like that. When I think "Buzz Lightyear origin story" I think of Buzz Lightyear the rookie becoming Buzz Lightyear the space ranger, not the space ranger becoming a slightly different space ranger.

Even this movie don't know what it is or what is trying to be, if it's set on TS universe (because of the whole "the movie Andy saw back then" stuff) should more like a goofy space movie like every animated or live-action movie on the 80's or 90's targeted for everyone (kids and adults), but it tries to be this serious and dramatic tone at times but then some little goofy joke with the characters and then again Buzz being super serious, honestly I don't think kids like Andy back then would be so invested in movies like this one.

I felt like this was a good movie, perhaps great even in my personal opinion, but it didn’t feel like a typical Pixar movie. It honestly feels like a basic but well executed science fiction movie, but it happens to be about Buzz Lightyear, which is what justifies it being both a kid’s movie and an animated Pixar movie. While it’s simply not a Toy Story movie at the end of the day and isn’t about the Buzz we see in those movies, I do think it’s a perfect introduction to the world of science fiction to any kid who’s a fan of Toy Story, and I honestly wish this movie was getting more attention.
