Looking forward to this series, I'm a Firefighter and I'm really exited to see what will you bring up. Just one thing on this video, the CO2 extinguisher does not break the redox, but replaces de oxygen, there is an extinguisher that breaks the chain reaction, but instead of CO2, it has a chemichal powder that does break the redox.

4:51 Just one very important point; water doesn't cool a fire, it smothers it (removes access to oxygen). What is really neat to watch are items that create oxygen when they burn, like magnesium. Once it starts burning, it will continue to burn under water, which is why for some fires (depending on the fuel) one needs to use a different class/type of extinguisher.

CO2 extinguishers do not work by breaking the redox reaction but by replacing the oxygen by CO2.
@seraphina985
@seraphina985 7 жыл бұрын
Indeed only Halon extinguishers actually worked that way and those are banned for almost all terrestrial use now because they are as good at degrading ozone as they are at degrading the intermediate oxygen radicals that propagate combustion reactions.

Matches (mostly) don't light up thanks to friction they light up thanks to a chemical reaction between the powder on the stick and the powder on the match box. Matches that can light up without the match box simply contain both chemicals on the stick.
@will3346
@will3346 8 жыл бұрын
The chemicals are part of it but the friction contains the initial heat to get the reaction going. If friction was not part of it the matches that have both chemicals on it would spontaneously combust
@flaviusclaudius7510
@flaviusclaudius7510 8 жыл бұрын
+Chlagvuk You can test this idea really easily! Gently touch the match head against the side of the box, and see if it ignites; if the friction is unimportant, you should end up with a flame.

Good stuff. The only thing is CO2 will only remove is the oxygen therefore suffocating the fire removing part of the fire triangle. The chemical reaction can be disrupted by using a fire extinguisher called HALON 1211 or HALON 1301 HALON for example, however is highly dangerous to the Ozone depletion so it is an absolute last resort. But great stuff. I like how you brought the history along with scientific relevance to explain the substance of fire.

@Natu776
@Natu776 2 жыл бұрын
This is due to different dimensional realities being temporarily created and you are viewing it through a portal into that dimension. Matter obeys different physical laws in different universes. To find out more jump into the flame where the portal is created, and hopefully there will be a being to explain it to you. Most of these portals lead to some dimension named "Death", and apparently its nice.

Trace I think you missed a great opportunity to illustrate how a non fiction generated heat can produce fire. Many brush and forest fires start because sunlight being reflected through an item of glass heat a small portion of arid dry grass or timber thus creating heat strong enough to start a smolder that builds to a greater flame.

+Mehdi RH The blue stuff at the bottom of the flame is light emitted directly from the formation of new bonds (the energy is released in part as photons). The orange bit is stuff in the air (e.g. particles of soot) that is heated to the point where it radiates away heat into the visible light, in much the same way a piece of hot metal glows red.

question: how does water extinguish fire? why doesn't the fire use the oxygen in the water as fuel to burn?
@will3346

First water cools down the fire and also smothers it. Second the reason why it doesn't pull the oxygen out is because the hydrogen and oxygen bond is extremely strong

"If oxygen doesn't exist, people cant breath." what exactly do you mean by that? just because you breathe air do you have to name it as oxygen and call it made of an oxygen atom? Things are not made of atoms. But, It is easy to achieve people by writing fictions as atoms and atomic structures. Okay: let me ask you a question, how does oxygen itself burn? by another oxygen? what is fire exactly, in terms of atoms? - don't tell me about the meaningless word chemical reaction. I want you to tell me in terms of atoms and their components If you know exactly what fire is and atoms are real. Thanks..
