ALSO, it seems that lately these stores like dingy Wal-Mart, & Target are not offering customers a good choice of clothes, the clothing styles & colors suck. Retail "Shrink" by definition is loss/decrease of inventory from causes other than customer sales, not just loss of inventory due to customer theft.Theft is a type of shrink just like: employee theft, bookkeeping errors, vendor fraud, etc. You can't under staff and cut corners and expect to not see an increase in all types of shrink.

My girlfriend used to work for them and she would come home every day with stories of people walking in and just walking out with merchandise without paying she said the store policy was not to bother them not to say anything and every single day people just walked into those family dollars And stole. that’s what they’re not saying you can’t make a profit if the items you’re buying are being stolen instead of paid for.

@@MeMyself-y5n Well- they *did* sell name brand products for $1 at the .99¢ store and they just went out of business this year 🥺 Idk about Family Dollars everywhere, maybe there’s regional differences or perhaps they’ve changed since my last disappointing attempt at trying to find low-cost quality items but this has definitely been my experience, mostly off brand, OVERPRICED 🗑️. If you’re able to find some deals at Family Dollar, that’s great and more power to you, most of us could certainly use the saving. I’d still recommend price comparisons with other discount stores. I do occasionally scour the shelves of a Dollar Tree (well the $1.25 Tree now… Sidenote: absolutely wild how they just raised prices by 25% in one fell swoop 🙃) but as I’ve gotten older I’ve learned that buying the “low-cost” option is often the more expensive choice in the long run- like smaller sized products that are exponentially more expensive than their full sized counterparts or low quality products (paper towels especially!) that you have to use 2x as much of for the same results. *sigh* late-stage capitalism, what a time to be alive ❤🤍💙🤠

Dollar General is expensive as heck. They take advantage of their rural locations by only having the most well known and expensive brands so the poor folk who might not even be able to afford a car are forced to shop in Dollar General and remain in poverty due to the massively expensive prices and despite the low cost of operating in a rural area, they only keep 1-2 people working at a time and pay them as close to minimum wage as possible. Absolutely travesty of a chain store

Nice segment. But, if anyone has shopped at Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, and Dollar General, they could easily figure out which one of the three was about to close. In addition to the disorder and dingy ambiance at Family Dollar, the merchandise selection is poor and poor quality (even for discount merchandise), and the prices are not as good as Walmart. Dollar Tree, sadly, could also be dragged down by this catastrophe. Their stores have been struggling, too, in recent months. With inflation, they cannot keep their price low, while keeping their traditional selection of merchandise.

@@ryantetreault3447 I wish I had done that too. Definitely noticed it. Definitely knew they were using the pandemic as an excuse to raise prices like every other gouging corporation and those others making record profits because of it. The second I saw that literal 25% price increase / 25% inflation, I thought okay, not cool, and knew that they were betting that because things were "just a dollar" that people would still think it's cheap at "just $1.25." And they were right. They could and are getting away with it like everyone else. I would've liked to have voted with my feet and $ too. But the Dollar Trees in our area were and still are too valuable to me and looks like others too. Their greetings cards (fortunately still many for 2 for .50), gift wrap, seasonal decor and items, office supply, crafts and snacks, some toiletries, home goods, etc, are still an amazing selection and still good price. And the selections and volume are even a little different at different stores. The seasonal items like decor, outdoor stuff, etc is really popular, a big selection heavily stocked and sells out in just a few weeks. So word is out that it's the place to go for those items. I know I use them a lot for that. All my Christmas supplies and most decor even & year round greeting cards & gift wrap supplies come from there. The oversized Xmas gift bags were so pretty last year I altered them a bit with thin long strips of craft wood for frames and used them as good looking wall art. 👍 Best place to shop for those things actually. Fortunately or unfortunately. 🤔😩😒

The CEO of Dollar Tree says the investments into Family Dollar have not paid returns. The reporter says Family Dollar still did not invest much in store operations and quality as much as other competitors. Looks like they had did not manage their stores, inventory and product assortment to maximize sales and lower costs. If anything Dollar Tree’s acquisition gave them inroads into metro cities way back in 2015. With complimentary product assortments between the 2 brands and different markets Suburban (Tree) and urban (Family Dollar), there is no reason why this should have failed unlike Walmart express that failed in cities because of having more of the same essential products and cannibalizing sales from the bigger formats just outside metros. Looks like a classic case of mismanagement, poor quality of store, inventory and product assortment and not being able to win customers over. Even the high income customers in cities today are buying cheaper alternatives more from Walmart, DG etc. so it’s just about catering to their needs as they change.

Corporate knew this, and only organizes the cleanup after they were tipped off that Fox was coming to highly their position in the neighborhood (which is a food desert.) They completely ignored complaints from staffer, the community and the alderman . The store was back to its original state after a month. They do not care because they make profit regardless.

Dollar stores are going to have a lot of competition soon becasue all stores in the USA that you shop in will have a low price section carrying ultra cheap stuff soon. Why? because the customer demands it. With the rise of websites like TEMU that sell direct from China the manufacturers in China are producing those goods in large quantity but with large US retailers they can offer an even better long term contract and so they will adapt to the new customer and manufacturer leading to a lot of the stuff showing up in your local grocery store and whatever stores you shop in. It might take a few months but it's coming. This could be a problem for Dollar stores but great for the customer as they will get to buy cheap goods right while doing shopping and reduce their cost of living which is always a good thing.

Please please do the minimum journalistic effort and research these companies’ claims of shoplifting epidemics and syndicates. This has been repeatedly debunked. Stores weren’t closed because a guy took a roll of paper towels. The companies cut wages and positions until their stores were trash pits, and shoppers had to do their own shelving, when the store could open at all. Deterioration in experience quality made the stores unappealing and sales reflected that. Family Dollar could have raised wages and hired enough workers to allow for sick days, and treated their managers better, but instead they chose to close stores and blame their customers. Good riddance to an untenable business model.

One great thing about Family Dollar that keeps customers coming back is that they don't have to deal with the sheer hugeness of Walmart. There is usually no running in and getting a few items, paying, and being on your way at Wally World. People can buy most of the same name brand items at a similar price at a small store a mile or two from home, and continue on their way. Yeah, they still go to Walmart, but just once a month, because it's such a project.

Well, I can tell you how they stay open. Many people with kids in tow, many elderly or disabled people, and many poor people without transportation need to go somewhere with a variety of goods but that is close to home. Family dollar has name brands, off brands, a great coupon app, super discounts on off-season clothing, a refrigerated section, frozen food section, toys, crafts, light hardware, automotive supplies, a large variety of OTC meds, body and hair care products, etc. And actual cashiers to check you out. It is a huge loss to a community when one has to close because of theft.

Family Dollar has raised their prices where they are more expensive than the major retail stores. There is a constant turn over of employees and managers. Such as other supposedly dollar stores, they do not have enough help, no storage areas so therefore customers can't get their carts down the aisles because of the delivered items still in cartons are filling the aisles. I only went to Family Dollar for one item and now that it has gone from $5.00 to $7.20 in 2 years........I don't feel it is worth my time to go.

Seems like it would make more sense for Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and Family Dollar to just merge and become one large company (Dollar Mart, Cash Cow, or whatever they want to call themselves.). Since Dollar Tree is charging $1.25 now, it really can't call itself "Dollar" Tree anymore, anyway. And the other stores can combine with it, use the combined money to improve the stores, change to better locations, pay their employees better, and clean up their stores. Besides, although people might complain about it becoming a monopoly, all 3 stores are selling similar stuff for similar prices. Might as well stop hemorrhaging money, combine forces, and improve their situations, for their sake AND for ours.

Dollar General is not a real dollar store, it’s worse than 5 below, even after they turned into 5 above

The familydollar store in jonesboro, GA is just Horrendous, it even stinks in there. Im not one to have very high expectations generally, but if I recognize it then its extreme.

closures are due to reduction of families because they are expensive to function and increase of inviduals which are cheaper. so when there are no familiar then no family dollar

It's almost like selling merchandise for $1 leaves little room to actually properly run a business. Dollar Tree in my town has looked exactly like the disheveled Family Dollar for the past 25 years. I would love to see these disgraceful rackets flop and get replaced by respectable and legitimate organizations.

In a different world the high unit margins could be very profitable, while providing a valuable service to smaller households who prefer variety over bulk. But dollar stores refuse to install self checkout due to fear of shrink... then you have to pay a cashier to scan every $1 item.

I came to enjoy rummaging around the disheveled aisles. The shopping experience was surreal. Who would run a place looking like that?

Family Dollar don't sell anything for a dollar besides off brand items. But even off brand items are more expensive than Walmart's off brand items.. Walmart is the reason why Family Dollar is struggling

I'm sorry but their stores are always a mess and chaotic. Usually 1 person working register , stocking shelves at once. I don't care how cheap , or not , a store is....people EXPECT the basics , like a clean store, friendly workers , safe product, etc. Family Dollar is terrible at the basics.

Family dollar is an ok store, just don't expect many things for a dollar.i have walked out of a few of them because after five minutes no one is at the register even after chasing the clerk down.dollar stores aren't like they used to be, everything was a dollar.now about half of the store is dollar stuff.its at least a dollar 25 and everything has gotten smaller.i can see why they have problems though,I never thought people would bother to steal from a dollar store but kids regularly walk out with lots and lots of stuff.

So they come into town, out compete existing businesses and now they’re shutting down? Won’t this leave a lot of people in food deserts and without job opportunities?
