I already know for a fact that the FBI can and will get upset if they cannot see what someone is doing on their device. Or at least that was the case at one point. My dad, who is a talented computer programmer, once made a security system on his computer. Said security system was practically unhackable unless you had an in person document. A few weeks later, he received an official letter from the FBI demanding that he remove this security measure as they could not hack into it and were concerned about it. My dad, of course, removed the security system immediately. About three years ago, my dad applied for a job at the FBI (desk work, I mean. Not anything fancy) and they flat out said that since my dad had been put on a watchlist they could not hire him. So. Maybe they’re not watching through the cameras, but they are watching. Or at least, they have been at some point. XD

I figured out back in the early nineties that everyone was being watched as much as was then possible. I was in the state police, had just made master sergeant, and was assigned the task of taking field reports and entering names and objects (guns, cars, etc.) listed and then connecting these people and objects based on relationships. I had hardly started into that task when I was assigned two others, and that task and the computer suddenly were no longer there. I realized then that someone had decided that having officers in the field do this wasn’t secret enough, so no doubt some more specialized personnel in a central office were taking reports from all the districts and doing it. It wasn’t actually surveillance, but it was an indication to me of how surveillance data is used: everything we do is monitored now in any way they can, and everyone we know, everything we buy, and everywhere we go is tied to us digitally, so that they really know us, know what we will do, and can prevent us ever hiding from them. This is not a good thing, and if it were up to me, the massive databases they keep on all of us would be purged, and the people who made the decision to watch our every move would spend the rest of their lives in prison. Yes, I am a retired police officer, but I never wanted to be part of a police state, which is what we are becoming.

Tell your dad that next time he applies to the FBI he shouldn't hack into their computers to put his resume at the top of the stack of resumes they get for cybersecurity jobs to stop hackers. Most secure way is to mail it in an unmarked envelope, no return address, too much postage, and put baby powder inside with the resume so it doesn't get stuck to the envelope. Trust me, the FBI loves applicants who put that much effort into applications and they'll show up at his front door wanting to interview him almost immediately
