I really love the way you can tell the difference in how much rats like a treat by how violently it's taken from your fingers. Something like a blueberry would be a very polite "oh, don't mind if I do!" grab, but we would give our rats something really unhealthy like a whole Cheez-It a few times a year, and got damn those were SNATCHED tf out of your hand.
@monicaevie41523 жыл бұрын
You would give them a cheeze-it only a few times a year? Shit, I give my rats junk food almost daily (along with healthy food of course!) Rats love food and they don't live long, you might as well let them enjoy what time they have by letting them eat yummy food! :))

My rats favorite food is dandelions which makes it nice and cheap if you ever saw my lawn. I read the flowers are not good though, just the leaves but there is a bunny around here that eats the flowers. Me and the bunny have an agreement, he eats the flowers and my rats eat the leaves.

@Eternatease6 жыл бұрын
I have read stories about rats choking on pizza crust. And yes, the spices (and don't forget the salt content!) and other ingredients (salami) can be bad for the rats as well

Sugar (except fruits) and any milk products should be in the what not to feed imo, and I say this after I spent a lot of time reading studies etc. ! Skin and seeds of avocado are bad but avocado itself is really good. Pumpkin seed are really really good for rats too (noticeable positive effect on tumors and cancer when rats are feed with this type of seeds.) Also the best is to try to find some organic food or to avoid the skin of vegetables like tomatoes and cucumber because all the pesticides are in the skin. Good video, I feel like rat diet is underestimated when it comes to their health.
@Eternatease6 жыл бұрын
I would always be cautious about claims about another 'magical cancer therapy'. Too many pseudo-scientific sites make unsubstantiated claims. Try here for peer-reviewed scientific information: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed and enter 'pumpkin seed cancer' or 'pumpkin seed rats' in the search field.

I understand, but I was not talking about magical cancer therapy, not at all, it's sadly mostly just studies done on .. rats as ''guinea-pigs.''

Hello ! I am a French recent rat owner (2 babies rescued from a laboratory a week ago). In order to tame them, I used to give them some plant-based yogurt. Now, I can barely hold them, they come on my knees, I can slowly stroke them (I'm taming them thanks to your videos), but I have noticed they have become completeley crazy about yogurt. And I used to give them 2 a day some yogurt. And now, each time I propose them some veggies, they don't even try it ! So I would like to know if I should stop yogurt.. ? Maybe replace it with a less sugary food ? (They don't like the apple compote) I thank you a lot, your videos have helped me with my first ratties !

As for meal worms, when I first got my little baby girls this was one of the only ways to get them to eat protein. Unfortunately the breeder I got them from was feeding them poorly and they were lacking the protein they needed to grow. Now my little mooshies only get them here and there for treats. I hope this helps also per rat per day was 2 each.

First time rat parent but I did own a dwarf hamster prior to my three ratties. And I did feed my hamster mealworms. Now I know they are two different animals but they are still within the rodent family. I wanted to pass along info I learned while feeding my hamster mealworms. That it is HIGHLY reccommended to feed mealworms as a HIGH VALUE TREAT meaning that its used as a great reward for something like litter training. But should only be given once a week. And that it's also recommended to crush the mealworms head before feeding them it because the insect will bite the mouth/cheek area's potentially causing some infections.
@UnbelievableSeries6 жыл бұрын
I'm safely assuming this same base advice can be used for rats as well! And I believe that it can also be used for any other rodents potentially.
@ShadowTheRat6 жыл бұрын
Yup, rats can have several worms a week although especially with older rats you want to minimize too much fat or protein. My girls don't get meal worms however they have found and eaten bugs before so I'm pretty sure they'd be more than happy to take on a mealworm.
@garyadamsgma14956 жыл бұрын
Meal worms are a favorite treat of my rats! I buy the freeze dried meal worms found in the Wild Bird feed section of the store. I have fed them live meal worms and they really like them, but it is a little gross! LOL Meal worms are only a occassional treat.

I've heard that rats can eat normal non diluted peanut butter if you spread it really thin on something and give it to them. I don't know if this is true and I haven't tried it but it makes sense that it would work.

Rats, like humans or any animals naturally have a small population of mites living on them. These are species specific though and cannot transfer to you, and they are microscopic so you won't see them visually (any visual parasites need to be treated). The rats own immune system keeps fur mites in check, however occasionally stressors like going to a new home or doing intros can cause a flare up, at which point you need to step in and treat them with kitten revolution in order to bring numbers down again.

Rice can be a bit iffy if it isn't watery enough, but oats should be okay. Even rice is okay as long as you aren't letting them take huge globs of sticky rice. Personally I've had trouble with dry oats (they scarf them down and more than once have choked on the dusty bits) so I won't feed them dry most of the time, but I have given them some oatmeal on occasion and that goes down fine.

@ShadowTheRat5 жыл бұрын
It’s actually even better for young rats as they need more protein than adults - the youngest rats I’ve given it to were 4 weeks, but I’ve seen breeders give some when weaning babies as well (it mixes great with softened pellets as well for older or sick rats, but due to the protein content when rats get older you do need to ration it more since rats as a whole are prone to kidney failure as they age (especially males)).

I’ve fed my rats peanuts from a bird mix because I thought because it safe for squirrels it would be safe for rats. But I guess not 😬? I’ll stop feeding them peanuts in the future. Do you know why rats cant eat peanuts 🥜 ? Have i just killed my rats 😟. Do I need to be aware of problems that raw peanuts cause?

Roasted peanuts are fine, but raw peanuts and any raw legume will contain hemaglutin, and this will cause the clumping of red blood cells and the destruction of Vitamin A. In small amounts it won't hurt them enough for a noticeable effect, but its still best to stick to roasted peanuts and other legumes only. As for your rats they will be fine - just make sure to stick to roasted or cooked legumes like peanuts in the future.

Is it alright to give them doritos? Mine loves them
@ShadowTheRat3 жыл бұрын
As a rare treat, yes, but like other junk food they are way too salty and have no real nutritional value so they shouldn’t be given often.

They'll snatch sugar out of your hand but politely take the veggies lol

Why can you only give them cooked peanuts? I had no idea that was a thing
@ShadowTheRat6 жыл бұрын
Peanuts are actually beans (legumes) despite the name and raw beans contain toxins in them. Both humans and rats shouldn't eat raw beans but in our case our larger size means we require more to be harmed.

Why can't they have peanuts? (Another filler aside from corn in most rat foods. Yikes)
