As a game dev, I’ve wanted to explain the intricacies of game design to you for quite a while. But I never did, as I realized that people kind of have to try it for real, in a serious way, before they can actually get it. Glad to hear that you’re in the shit (in a positive sense). It’s tough as hell, the learning curve is brutal, but if you come out of it at the end with more knowledge and skill, it’s a major gain. And if you do it with a good game, it’s fantastic. As a solo dev, I worked (and still work) 12 hours a day on my game Aftertime, and this man had no issue calling it all Marketplace assets (Most probably did that to gain some views). It's just $4.99 in USA and $2.99 in most other regions. No one got scammed or got something other than what's shown in Steam page. A game can be bad, but that doesn't mean it's just bunch of assets put together. Some people should learn to respect a dev's hard work, instead of blindly trash talking about their projects.

As a solo dev, I can say that going into this back in 2020 knowing nothing at all about the deeper aspects outside of RPG Maker has taught me a LOT. I quit my job in 2021 due to health issues and with free time on my hands, I began to get DEEP into game dev. It's the beginning of 2023 and I'm still trying to maximize my own efficiency so I can make a working game. My game's gone through many iterations and ideas, just so I could balance ambition and actually being able to finish the game. So far, the ideas I've been through are: A first person version of Hatred with a much more empathetic story, first person Fallout 2 with a bigger focus on the sandbox, arena survival with battlefield pickups like MW3's Survival or, the basis for this specific idea, Frantic(a Miniclip game I used to play). Right now, the idea I've landed on that I feel combines a lot of what I want to do is a STALKER style survival game set in a vaguely Eastern European location, so I can be more creative with the environment. Having grown up in EEU myself, I'm VERY familiar with the old Soviet architecture, which makes me not want to restrict myself to Chernobyl and Pripyat, since they're actual real life places with pre-existing locations, buildings and structure.

The point you made about the wedge is not far off what I touched on in a stream - you all are ARTISTS. You pour passion into an expression and of course you have a business to run otherwise how do people get paid and you all live and all that. But there are others who ONLY care about money. I think you can run a good business and thrive without squeezing every last penny out of someone. The wedge is a double edged sword really, consumers have had bad experiences with cynical people, creators think consumers have absurdly high expectations. The best way to get through it is to listen, understand, and make a good damn piece of art.

Of course, with all games we won't know how it is until it comes out, but with how in depth your critiques are for games, I am sure that quality will be good. It does give you a different appreciation for games, you’ll also see features in other games and start to realize how they were implemented. Making a game isn’t hard, making a fun game is hard. You’ll be your biggest critic, remember players won’t know the choices you removed during iteration so don’t be too hard on yourself as you push to making things fun. I hope it doesn’t flop, and if it does, I hope you release what you have for free as a mark of “we made a game. It was not good. But we completed something”. Best of luck, keep at it. Although not a game dev still some advice from a MIL-SIM player. 1. Add enough customization options to guns but not too many, too many attachments can be overwhelming. 2. If your on the realism side don't add microtransactions, skins, gun skins, etc. Squad recently released microtransactions with a menu almost ripped from Fornite, followed by outrage from the community. 3. Good blood effects and gore is key in realism, if there is alot of gore then it feels like your actually shooting something, and that you have hit it.

It is generally the best way to make the best product, it is just hard to find the people willing to put in the time and effort that you must need to have such a beautiful looking game from lighting, ragdolls, . All look as good as the best FPS games I.. Actually, no, i don't think I can say I personally have seen a game with gameplay as realistic as yours.. No cap. And yes, I do agree - gaming community is toxic as fuck, but don't you think it's also partially fault of content creators jumping on the hatewagon, so they can count in more views? Let's be real, when a certain game fails miserably on launch literally everybody is talking about it, usually in a way not to alienate themselves from the wider audience or even cater to it. I also think that videos like this are much needed today in order to revert this trend of "blind negativity" and bring back some rational thinking to the community overall. All in all, thank you for making this video! I hope we'll be seeing more of stuff like that not only on your channel! As a gamedev myself, I understand you. Making good games is hard, takes a LOT of time, dedication and love. Sometimes makes you want to quit simply by the fact that you have to deal with so many things at the same time. It's tiring but I know it's worth when I see people having fun with the game when we are testing. I work in a game called Kubberz. It's a monster taming action rpg that will have open world and multiplayer. We are like 15 people (Maybe less or more. My memory is terrible) working actively on the game. The thing is that the game is HUGE. There are so many things to do and when you see this kind of thing you start to think that games well made worth much more than you think. We are planning to have the most usual PVP (Like 4v4 TDM, King of The Hill) but we also want an immersive open world. And doing this properly takes time. A LOT of time. You will make mistakes, rethink designs, rethink mechanics and will start understanding that some things that seems simple is HELLA HARD TO DO. Like The Water you see in a game probably take weeks to be created... Of course you can go the easy path looking for assets, but a lot of them are not well optimized so you need to create your own solution if you care about the game (Or check is the Asset is properly optimized for the game, for example). Being a gamedev is definitely harder than most people think. Being an indie dev has it's particular challenges as well depending on the size of the game you want to build. But at the end of the day, you just want people to have fun. I really like the fact that in our game, we tested the new alpha version we are creating. We hated it. We hated it because it was buggy and had so many problems. When we solved the pile of problems we could see the potential of this alpha version and that's so rewarding when you look at it.

This video really made think about my frustration with a couple games, one of which you touched on. Star Citizen can be frustrating especially if you poured money into it like I did but when I step back and look at what they are doing I come back down to earth…everything in star citizen is being built from the ground up and although I no longer play it I can appreciate it. Ground Branch is another and it’s only because I hate the length between updates for a game with minimal content but once again most of that game is being done from the ground up and it shows with perhaps some of the best “realistic” weapon animations right now. I will be buying your game because I can root for someone who took that step into the unknown and didn’t take the easy way out and it will pay off bigfry because like the games mentioned above, you are doing this from the ground up.

I personally couldn't care less if there isn't a single original asset in a game, as long as the experience that game offers is interesting and well crafted, because the core experience is what games are really about in my view. I think you should calrify (I think I understood what you mean but others might not) when you say an entire game made of marketplace assets; you don't mean a solo programmer buying assets so they don't have to make models, and then creating original maps and content from them, you mean "marketplace asset flips" where you just drop a completed map into your game. Am I right? Because you have to start somewhere and there's nothing wrong with using 100% marketplace assets to save on modeling or animations as long as you implement them in a unique way.

When it comes to consumer never forget one thing. The negative ones are the most vocal ones. People are more inclined to mention when something isn't to their liking and complain, then to praise something they like. So try to filter trough that, always look at what the complaints are to see if there is something you can work with, but never lose hope cause the reality is that for all those who complain, a lot of people like it and just not mention it. Working at a media company and in retail has shown me that, people expect a product/service to be good so they don't mention it when it does, and they are quick to shoot you down for the most minor things if they don't like that.

If it costs less than a Kid Rock concert, then I think you're doing more than fine. I look forward to playing this game.

Sadly, I think a lot of people will see this, think it is cool and make sense, and then never consider it when they are in a situation where they are challenged on these perpectives.

Agree and disagree with some points made in this video. I don't mind peak 53 doing what they have done. They have gathered a solid audience with the resources they had, and can now hopefully build off of the momentum. They have hired map designers now :) can't wait to see what happens with the title. If nothing happens, it is what it is. But I'm being cautiously optimistic! I think your opinion with peak 53 was a little too eager and/or early. Honestly what you call a scam.. I call smart money making decisions. Instead of wasting hundreds of dollars on actually building maps from the ground up, Peak 53 simply purchased the maps from an actual developer who's good at it. They used those professional maps to make a solid trailer that will gather an audience, now they can actually hire developers to get it done. Really smart money saving decisions, especially for how small of a team they were. They know how to save money while also looking good. Also you have to remember developers are people.. and people make mistakes, I'm not going to hold a developer accountable for the rest of his life for any previous games they may have failed on or may have left behind, in pursuit of a greater Passion. Anyways, I respect you as a content creator. Just think you jumped the gun on this one and it would have been more beneficial for you to see how it played out first. Then made a review on the game. Also quotes like "it only fools the blind" is a bit harsh. Been a supporter for a long time and comments like those feel like a low blow. You'll be better off actually convincing people without the name calling.

I have a suggestion, you should do it where if you shoot one of the bad guys somewhere not in the head they'll still be alive but fall to ground and trying to alert others. I've seen others do it, but if that's not the type of gameplay you want I'm fine. Your game looks amazing

$10-$20 is definitely the right spot for indie games. Like I’ve said previously, as long as you aren’t pushing the awful $70 price point that’s seeming to become the norm I’m all in.

I've been involved, within different roles, in developing all sorts of software-related projects for over a decade now; mostly solo, sometimes as a project manager or lead programmer. Many people without experience tend to assume that we can just check a box or drag a bar to enable and tweak things. It's easy from the outside to assume that, because a feature is in one game, that it should be easy to just "add" to another. The veil that AAA studios always kept up until just before launch (at least back in the day) hid all the technical work that went into getting things to that point. Software development (game dev imo being a discipline of which) is hard. And not for the reasons you might assume. I could go on and on about the pitfalls of software development and the irony in its consumers' perspective. This isn't too say that I don't get upset when I experience a problem in a piece of software or a game. Just because you can guess why it happened doesn't make it less frustrating lol. Especially when you think you can fix it. I was really glad when I watched your studio/game announcement video and I immediately wanted to take part. I don't remember if I applied. I've been waiting a long time for someone in this space here to start something. Good also to see you gaining some perspective on the other end of the industry. There are still amazing things happening in gaming, but you really gotta look.

meh, the difference between hate and criticism is that hate is criticism designed to make you feel bad. It doesn't even matter if there's a positive outcome, the point of hate or vitriol is just to attack the target of criticism.

This was insightful and I'm glad you got it off of your chest. Game dev is a volatile thing - trends change, standards shift, and something like Covid can come along and wreck your whole pipeline. That said, most paying customers don't care about that sort of thing. They might understand them, but they won't care because it's their money that's on the line. It won't make me feel better about buying a disappointing game to know that the devs had passion and worked very hard on it. At the end of the day game studios are not charities and gaming customers are not philanthropists. There is a fair exchange happening there, and all of the problems you've talked about in the past come from one or both parties being dissatisfied with that exchange. On the other hand, if a game is really great and it's something that I feel appeals directly to me then I actually am happy to spend a little more money to support the devs and potentially fund a sequel. Good luck with this project dude it's a big undertaking and I don't envy you. I wish you and your team nothing but success.

Quite glad to hear you calling out the project management issues. Its a huge problem in all industries. Upper management seem to think that a subject matter expert is the right person to lead a project. Usually couldnt be further from the truth. So many of companies in so many industries need to invest in proper project management. Like just Bethesda... that fucken nard, Todd Howard, hes not a manager, or a leader, and hes definitely not a project manager. Fallout76 could have been great with proper management. Instead they turned into a beloved franchise into a complete joke. and its happening more and more often

In the end, you can only progress by accepting a challenge, and embracing the shit that comes with it. What you put out as a result of dealing with all of the shit, and putting the work that you put in, will hopefully be worth it to you firstly, and make yourself proud of your own effort and team. I'm sure that you will look back on this journey with relief, and understand the growth in perspective.

Yeah all well and good when you have a team of people. When you are completely solo and doing it all by yourself it becomes WAY too difficult and time consuming to build a game and to create EVERY asset in game.

Having game dev knowledge and skills, I'm not too critical on mistakes. I do a lot of research on games before I buy them, considering the price based on how much time I would play the game. Transience is a game that I would spend $20 or $30 on just to support the team. Knowing from what I have seen it's at least that much playtime value.
