well i mean...crunchy tacos, and chimichangas are not really "authentic Mexican cuisine" they are tex-mex. basically Americanized Mexican food. much like panda express is Americanized Chinese food. so some of the foods they were mentioning are what i would call American in that they are inspired by other cuisines but tailored to American tastes

In Germany, as far as I know, kids are required to graduate, speaking 3 languages, fluently; German, English and the third is an elective. I am myself am immigrant (LPR) that eventually naturalized (now have dual nationality). I don’t have a particular pick when it comes to food since I can eat just about anything. I will NEVER be a vegetarian. As kid when I immigrated, the most impressive stuff that I experienced was the SIZE of the supermarkets!!!! HUGE!!!! And lots of different types of food.

I think a lot of Europeans are making that judgment based on they're American style restaurants that they have. That attempt to make American style Foods but really don't have a clue. There's really no such thing as American food. America is the world's largest Melting Pot there's so many different cultures so you really can't say you don't like it because it includes every type of food in the world.

Interesting prominence for Mexican food, even though it's probably mostly about Tex-Mex and not elevated. Hey, they're students, not food travelers with a spending account. I'm American but have lived two years in college in Germany. Mexican food was the food type I missed most when there. Back then, anyway, Germans had no clue about Mexican or Tex-Mex (that's 1990-ish). They didn't use most of the spices, herbs (try to find cilantro!), chiles, cheeses, salsa, etc.

I remember my high school hosting German exchange students 15 years ago. I didn't have any interaction, but I remember when they arrived. It was cold season, and they all seemed to be exceedingly well-dressed in expensive coats and luggage. I remember looking around at my fellow students and comparing how we dressed, and it felt really intimidating. It was weird because I attended the wealthiest school district in my state. I remember thinking that we were probably disappointing them.

If the 'Mexican' food contains these ingredients--- beef, yellow cheese (like cheddar), wheat flour, black beans, canned vegetables (especially tomatoes), and cumin.--- then it is actually considered Tex Mex. Those ingredients are generally not used in authentic Mexican dishes.
@TuFargon54
@TuFargon54 6 жыл бұрын
Mac Tek I was raised on Tex-Mex, so I don't really care. It was homemade and we didn't call it Tex-Mex, it was just what we had. Also, nothing came out of a can. It was in the 50's and 60's before it was labeled Tex-Mex...and like they say, it is delicious. Most "authentic" Mexican food is generally too greasy and has more of a primal flavor. Btw, fajitas are Tex-Mex too: • www.gazettetimes.com/news/local/history-of-fajitas-is-short-flavor-is-not/article_2bc50150-5d0a-11e1-b076-0019bb2963f4.html

Although you find these accents very American-which they are-notice how Scandinavians who spend months here also speak English with no accent. My wife and I were on an annual trip across "the pond", and sat next to a young Romanian guy who had been an exchange student in southern Texas. This guy sounded exactly like a person who had grown up on a ranch in Texas. You would not believe it. Here is quite an irony: To be quite frank, we live in Memphis, where a vast number of people who grew up here have trouble Speaking English. What is Their excuse?
