I want to congratulate you on your clarity. Not just because of the way you handled this topic, but also on the clarity with witch you articulate the words. I am italian and I don't speak well English, but I easily understand you. You seem honest to me, and that is also where your clarity comes from.

Thank you very much for this video!!! I've had to educate many on softness of hands and good leg aids (and I'm only a farrier/horsewoman). So many people have been taught wrong, even by trainers. I actually teach kids and adults by taking a couple leadropes, turn the person away from me while holding a lead in each hand, while I hold the other ends from behind them.... and then I barely move one or the other and have them tell me when they feel it. After I've done it 6-8 times, I have them turn around and I show them how light and subtle my movements were and they're shocked. Then I tell them if you can feel it, so can the horse. No need to wrench on their mouth! I'll be using this video as an example!

Thanks Sibyl. Evidently, I didn't explain the concept good enough as I'm already receiving emails from people who came away with the wrong concept. I may need to make a follow-up video. The folks who really pay attention of "how to use their hands" could get a lot out of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3u4k5x_jd-ga9k

I think a lot of people don't understand that light hands kind of equals the pressure that one horse will give to another horse with the pinning of the ears. Which is a no touch pressure asking for movement from one horse to another. Light hands basically is a feel communicated through the reins with "perceived" pressure but not physical pressure.

A lot of people are stuck in this nothing middle ground of average pressure. Pressure should be light, then if that's ignored, as heavy as necessary (bump bump). Reins or legs or anything you do. People who use pressure that is neither light enough at the start, nor heavy enough to act as "a consequence", just end up with horses who ignore them. Because there is no reward, and there is no consequence

A lot of horses I rode as a kid were hard in the mouth because of novice riders constantly yanking them around. It's like when you punish a child harshly but don't explain why they are being punished. It is abuse, and the child learns to simply ignore or avoid the parent. Is see it A LOT in English riding. There's no softness there.
