Read the description for my short write up
The short of it:
Absolute bests or "holy grails":
AMD R9 280x 6GB versions
Nvidia quadro m6000 24GB version
next bests:
AMD R9 280x 3GB or HD 7970
Nvidia Titan X (maxwell) or 980 ti
Why:
AMD stopped having analog out with most of the "r9 era" gpus.
Nvidia stopped having analog out with the "10xx" gpus starting with the Titan X pascal.
Digital to analog converters will only give you about half of the bandwidth needed to max out a really high-end crt.
Pros and Cons:
AMD interlaced resolutions are capped at around 2560x2560 but tend to work better in newer games.
Nvidia interlaced resolutions go a lot higher, flat out WILL NOT function at low interlaced resolutions, and have more issues setting up and getting to work in games.
Nvidia GPUs can be a lot newer with analog out, so the best of AMD won't be able to compete in newer and more demanding games.
Higher Nvidia interlaced resolutions are extremely useful even just for desktop use.
You might need to roll back AMD drivers to before the new radeon control panel to get interlaced resolutions to work.
My opinion:
A Titan X (maxwell) or 980 ti is so much more powerful than a 7970 or 280x that I'd go with them knowing all of the drawbacks. If it were between an older nvidia GPU or a 280x I'd go with the 280x.
Food for thought:
It might be possible to use a older nvidia gpu with analog out as a physx card, and use the video output on that with a newer nvidia gpu with no analog output.
