It's not just men but women as well, telling somebody to just get therapy is such a disconnected and generalizing statement. Therapy especially consistent specialized therapist are expensive. It is a luxury many people can't afford. So when somebody from a lofty position talks down to those with problems saying it's easy. That shows a clear disconnect or lack of understanding on their part.
@MDonuT-of7px8 ай бұрын
All jokes aside, as a guy who has been around the block in regards to therapy, actually financially affordable therapy is more often than not populated by therapists who weren't good enough to work for private psychiatric clinics. Due to my healthcare provider noticing how they would probably lose my further business if I flung myself onto some train tracks, I was able to spend three months at a private psychiatric clinic, and out of the four therapists I have been with, only my therapist at the clinic was worth a damn. Here are some of the quotes from the non-clinic therapists: - So, if you feel better than last week, then why are you here? - Ah, yeah being autistic is trendy these days. - Who cares if you were sexually abused, that's not an excuse to yell. - Eh, you don't seem very suicidal. Maybe men don't go to therapy because many men just cannot afford an actually good therapist. Not everybody has a penthouse suite in Hollywood. While I know nobody will actually interact with this comment outside of making fun of me for being poor or whatever, I just wanted to share this.
@TheEbe1989Ай бұрын
I think what you said is very true all across the world not just the US. The profession is also stacked with women who can't necesseraly relate to what men go through. I wouldnt wana go to therapy and talk about very personal things to a random stranger. Solid friends, family and communities is what would keep people grounded and happy. Unfortunately modern society separated us quite seriously so people are not having these connections, hence all the mental health issues. The whole idea of this go to therapy culture is just slapping a bandate on a cancer basically. Anyways, appreciate writing a serious comment and I hope you are doing okay :)
@MDonuT-of7pxАй бұрын
For reference, I am from Germany, and while our healthcare system is a thing of pride, sadly our taxpayer-funded mental healthcare is very spotty. And while I would agree that specifically male suffering traditionally takes a backseat to womens issues (by which I mean things like male SA victims or societal disgust towards male vulnerability, not "all women are gold diggers" fresh and fit type crud), I also have to mention that the one good therapist I had was also a woman. I was the victim of CSA at the hands of a female family member, and was completely disregarded until I blackmailed her at the age of 24 to pay for my therapy in exchange for not going to the cops (I have until 30 to press charges). I grew up with a deep seated mixture of envy and disgust towards specifically cis women (shoutout to trans women being there for me, y'all doing heavens work) due to my powerlessness to get justice a total lack of empathy from my family. My therapist being a woman, and basically telling me that "misogyny is not cool, but considering your biography, I get why you needed that to keep yourself from ending it", and being a practical example of being a cis woman who actually cared about my problems saved both my life and helped me see that this whole gender war BS is exactly just BS. Sometimes women therapists can really help male patients, especially if the problem is related to, as was in my case, being either scared or hating women.

@theragnarok13 Жыл бұрын
Been there, went through that. The only thing that helped me realize the problem: she just keeps living in your head rent-free, while you mean nothing to her since the day she dropped you. You’re better than worshiping a cheater that’s not capable to love anyone. I 100% guarantee you she hates herself when alone, and it’s HER own problem, not yours. And it never was. You’re an individual that’s not supposed to be relying on anyone on this fucking planet. You were alone when you came to this world, and you’ll be dying alone. You won’t be able to take your friends/mom/wife/gf/kids with you when you die. Let that sink in and don’t let Hollywood and Disney lure you into thinking that everything is possible. It’s an illusion, a trap, that you created for your own mind. You gotta get out of it. Btw, psychoactive stuff won’t help you heal. You can heal only by sobering up, staying away from alcohol/thc and other crap for at least 6-12 months. Learn to live by yourself, hope for the best, but get ready for the worst. Because the worst usually comes unexpectedly. It’s totally in your hands, you can do it - just make a thorough plan for every outcome that will possibly happen to you. Those things are parents’ death, loosing your housing, loosing your job, severe illness, sudden disability. If you don’t have an exact plan for every disastrous event - you’re pretty much not living in a reality. Because reality comes unexpectedly, and in case you’re unprepared - it will devastate you. Read some ancient Roman/Greek books about stoicism - Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca. They will explain what the real life actually is and how to get prepared. I can keep on going, but it’s all really in your hands. Just know, I’ve been in this situation, I know it sucks. But now I’m completely healed and strong both physically and mentally. I’ll never let people treat me the wrong way, because I treat myself with rigidity - I always keep the word given to myself. If I keep my word given to myself - I think twice before giving a promise to someone else. And if I did - I’ll strictly make it into reality, whatever it takes. Otherwise, if you lie to yourself, by breaking your promise given to yourself, how can you be honest with others? And if you don’t trust yourself, how can others trust your word? Modern society is really f*ked up, all these deceitful things people tell each other on the internet and in real life. The only way is to make yourself as powerful, as you possibly can. The truth is the power. Be sincere to yourself first. You’ll learn many things about yourself, that you’re actually a great person with many advantages, compared to others. When you clearly see your advantages - you know your power, you will never let people take use of you.

Well it's not really about needing therapy it's about getting to a place where your able to be honest with yourself and open about our problems. That's why we have people in our life to rely on each other because not everyone is able to be 100% independent. We are fallible human beings. There's a level of coping that people should be able to tough out but not an extreme level to where you're becoming a problem to someone else although that's rarely. I think the real problem is that families and households are getting increasing toxic and don't truly have people that love them and bring them up in a loving family who don't force you to feel like you're only a burden to them and that you can talk about your feelings with them. The least we can do as humans is lend an ear to someone in need especially within your family. You should never force someone to do what they don't want to but you can only encourage them with love to so something that is better for themselves and I guess sometimes that can be therapy but God damn a lot of times it's used as an excuse to not have to deal with someone else's problems because you have enough as it is. Relationships are for confiding in each other to carry the weight together. Many hands make light work
@DwynTwo9 ай бұрын
Yes, but often times, it's a problem when your friends and family become your substitute therapist. Lending an ear is one thing. Constantly having to listen to your problems and being expected to fix them for you is another. And often times guys will take their self loathing and trauma out on you and excuse it with "Well I was hurt when I was a kid and I am unhappy 🥺"; guess what, I was too, and I told my friends and family about it, but I know that they ultimately cannot help me with it.

Even if you can, it doesn't guarantee anything. I got a session finally 1 year in advance and it got canceled. Cue the I am on vacation sign. Want to reschedule when I'm free 2 years from now on Monday? Hell naw! I can't even get my disability benefits on time 8 months late or at all on other occasions. I would be homeless or dead if it weren't for my family. It doesn't help the agents keep switching, and at least half of them are lazy cold passive aggressive sods. All they gotta do is flip a few buttons and make a call.

In all seriousness, I've been to 3 therapists and had not terrible, but not great experiences. I've found the biggest problem with therapy, and the main reason I think men don't tend to go, is that the vast majority of therapist specialize in specific issues, and are mostly woman, and there just aren't enough that specialize in general male issues. Therefore, men don't take it as seriously.
@DarkVeghetta9 ай бұрын
Therapy for men isn't the same as therapy for women. Women mainly need to talk about their problems. Men mainly need to do something about their problems.

And now I want this woman to be my wife, damnit. I'd like to add, that apart from therapy, it can also be a step forward to open up more to anyone who cares. We need to learn to ask for help, not just from therapists.
@Ugg_Son_Of_Thogg Жыл бұрын
The problem is that no one cares. :( The fear of getting ghosted by others simply for talking about something you're going through (or have gone through for 9 god damn years) is worse when combined with toxic masculinity conditioning throughout childhood while going through some tough shits one after the other. Now I'm unable to trust to confide in anyone, love anyone, or feel loved by anyone. I'm not just gonna die alone, I'm DYING alone. I subconsciously keep any kind of relationships I'd ever make at an arms length just because I'm afraid to show my vulnerabilities. Don't choose the male option in the character menu, this strat sucks ass. You'll probably rage quit by the age of 18.

No to therapy because talking about your problems without actually self reflecting on past experiences, your behavior, your actions, and your trauma does nothing but drain your bank account, solutions to your problems, learning to accept things that happened, actually letting go of the past, not allowing the past to impact your future and your future relationships, and having to re-experience past things that will be extremely hard to go through, things that you have to come to terms with. I have yet to hear about someone who got over traumatic experiences, worked themselves out of depression, or crippling anxiety, extreme self doubt and a certain amount of lower view that almost exclusively points to why people have social anxiety, with various other reasons that led up to them starting to build and develop those views. Next is people that use it as a crutch to not improve and do more with their lives due to x,y and z, I get it, but letting depression and anxiety win is never the answer, you change the mindset, you start changing how you respond and react to those feelings and internal negative or out loud negative self talk, you start questioning the BS because depression is BS. This is the tip of the iceberg at what seemingly all therapist fail tremendously at... Im still trying to best figure out the always calm and chill and relaxing not judgmental tone and voice, which allows for the building of trust, openness, and vulnerability, dont point things as something they did or didn't do, instead talking about and even showing them how better to do it, combined with teaching better mindsets, I think its necessary to point out what is wrong, but even more importantly what is right, because its more positive and better to associate to, established what and how to achieve positivity over establishing negativity. Judgement and ostracization is what people are trying their best for the most part to avoid
@avertingapathy3052 Жыл бұрын
Isn't talking about them part of reflecting on them. I mean yeah, some can just complain. But stfu and reflect on it yourself mindset is also toxic for people, especially men who on average are more isolated than women. Decent therapy can help people establish safety to process last issues clouding their progress in the present or work on challenges in the future.

Do you have a bunch of male friends who have all tried therapy and ended up worse off for it? If yes, do you think you might have just surrounded yourself with a bunch of men who also share the same pessimistic outlook as you, and as such your perspective on therapy at large is skewed? If no, how do you come to this conclusion at all? Also, have you tried it yourself, and if so what was your experience like?

@@garrettdoyle888 that's the general consensus of society, mostly because the entire field of therapy is full of women and their values are the only acceptable ones, you won't get a single actionable plan from therapy just discussions to solve mental stuff. And that's nice, but guys usually need help with doing shit. We evolved to kill shit and resist in the face of immense struggle, now we're judged on our ability to be friendly and super positive and people act like we're broken when we're the same animalistic respect-driven creatures, just toned down due to society.
@GrizzzlyPanda Жыл бұрын
@@BusinessWolf1 You view therapy like an assignment at work or something to be done to just check off a list, as if to say don't worry society I did your little song and dance. In reality those 'discussions' with someone well trained would probably lead you pretty quickly from your current narrow viewed and victimized portrait of men and yourself in today's world and be able to break that down to a fundamental part of you that you didn't realize existed like fear of abandonment, etc. I mean seriously, take a second and re-read your message. Using the perspective of Man's evolution as a baseline not only shields you from being personally vulnerable in these scenarios, it clouds and diminishes your own individual needs, anxieties, and accomplishments that if discovered with say, oh idk a mental health professional, could actually be used to set an entirely new outlook in life. Good luck tho lol

Back when I was going through a rough patch in my life, I wound up being forced to see a therapist. It was good for me. It's nice having somebody that you can open up to without fear of judgment. Eventually, my therapist moved, and my life circumstances changed, and my social and professional life both picked up. I'm in a better place, but sometimes I miss therapy. I just don't feel as though I have the time or need to try hunting down and meet with a therapist I would gel with. I don't think you need to be in a bad place to benefit from it, but I do recognize that the logistical, financial, and social challenges make it hard for a lot of people to go to therapy unless they are really struggling with something. I hope most people get some at some point in their life even if they feel they are doing alright because some of my most meaningful conversations were in therapy.
