Its like that old cliche about political systems, "democracy isn't the best, but its the best we've got so far." Go is very similar. There is so much that Go has gotten right, with very few pit falls. For new code bases made today, it's really hard to justify not using Go in a major way. It makes going back to java, C#, node, python, and even Rust in ways, feel like a net loss. And go is only getting better with the Go team's commitment to and recent focus on the standard library. I really cant think of many web server use cases where Go isn't the best choice for a new product. Maybe Elixir for some use case? But I dont have enough experience with Elixir yet to say.

I am a maintainer of many open-source projects myself. I will tell you that it is really a thankless job and it is very hard work with practically nothing in return. I do not know what the answer is to the sustainability problem in open source. I agree that it is a difficult problem to solve but it does need to be solved.

We tried to migrate to Bun at work, but k8 pod usage went crazy and would not release memory causing the service to scale. Reverted back to Node and issues went away. Will wait a bit more before trying again :/
@awesome-coding

Interesting... in all fairness Node is really mature and optimised quite a lot of stuff. Remember that Bun is faster than Node in some specific areas. There are people arguing that those stats are cherry picked to make Bun look better than it actually is.

Actually the xz attack only affected the latest unstable versions of linux distros, which most people don't use and it only exists for testing purposes. had it not been noticed and pushed onto stable versions, this attack would've been MASSIVE! also a Microsoft employee found this attack by accident because his ssh login took 500ms longer than usual, LOL.
@wlockuz4467
@wlockuz4467 Ай бұрын
Luckily the guy was benchmarking something completely unrelated, but he noticed CPU spikes and memory errors when working with ssh that made him suspicious. I don't know where the 500ms difference thing comes from, but there is no way someone could tell that difference so it's likely misinformation.
@segsfault
@segsfault Ай бұрын
@@wlockuz4467 The guy wasn't benchmarking, he was just testing ssh (a software that uses xz), and he noticed that ssh took a little longer to login than before... because 500ms is half a second and it's noticeable because before the logins were almost instantaneous. so he benchmarked the software and noticed that a library called "xz" was taking alot of time than it is supposed to.

go is a great language but im a ts\js fanboy who is struggling to move to rust . i tried golang within 2-3 days i was good enough to make any kind of api , but still the ecosystem is not good , just 2 days before i dropped my plan to take go forward in my dev journey . ( No good lib for websockets) my goal was to learn some low level concept so that i can move faster in rust !!

No big deal. Those companies are probably already used to migrating to some new fancy tool every couple of months or so since they are working in JS ecosystem When Bun stops being free there will be tons of new shiny things to play with.

i don't think it's a good idea to add signals to js. i realize that it's just a pattern but it's moving towards js becoming a framework. look at how web components turned out. if we come up with a different pattern no one will use it and it will be just another way to do things that complicates js even more. plus imagine people using signals on the server. it's better to keep these patterns separated in my opinion.

@@awesome-coding they need to come up with a new language. dart was at one point going to be natively supported in the browser. it had push back but this was before typescript and when coffeescript and vanilla js were still popular. i don't think dart was the answer but if they proposed a new language now there would be a higher approval rate. wasm is probably the way forward for that but i think of it as more of an alternative as opposed to a standard.

Good updates, but I hope the signals proposal dies. I don't think its needed, it doesn't give anything not already given by the DOM api. Also tc39 is a distinct and seperate concern from css & browser standards.

Hi let me tell you how signals could've helped me, I'm currently building Material3 for a framework called Droidscript to switch between dark and light mode you literally have to restart an app so I implemented signals to allow seamless switching without restarting an app 😊 imagine have to close an app then open it to switch themes 😭😭

My main worry is the use of signals outside of a UI context. I've seen some Vue code bases which use signals for basic API calls without any frontend component and it leads to a debug nightmare at times. They are great for UI updates though.
