I remember hearing 3-4 years ago that Wilson was starting to rub guys the wrong way - specifically bitching about his OL and always saying what HE needed. I think it goes deeper than that. The problem is Carroll, his ancient philosophy, and the continued bad drafts.

@Greg Moore I'm a Rams fan so I know alot about the Seahawks because we play twice every season and sometimes in the playoffs. The only reason the Seahawks have been relevant the last 5 or 6 years is because of Russ. It is hard to win in this league without an excellent Qb. I know all about this because I suffered through the Jared Goff years and he wasn't good enough to win it all. This year we get Stafford and first year he wins the Superbowl. Your not going anywhere without a legitimate QB. Russ is the reason the Seahawks have been relevant and without him you guys are going to 5-12 every year until you get someone legit. I know all about this all too well. The Seahawks are finished without a great Qb. Good Luck with that.

@Greg Moore Allen isn’t wrong. The interception broke the team because Carroll and Wilson both stood by the decision. Marshawn Lynch told it true when he said the NFL didn’t want him to be the MVP. The game winning call was given to the young franchise QB to help bolster his legacy. The defense dominated the narrative and this was his moment to step out of his game managing reputation. All the Seahawks had to do was tell the truth Monday, say it was a hero call for Wilson and he blew it.
@jasonlyle4113

@Greg Moore Proving what point? The Seahawks are not going anywhere without a Qb period. Russ was the reason you have been relevant without him your finished. You cannot won big in the NFL without a top flight Qb. You had one and trade him away for some picks. Have fun finishing last in the NFC West next season. Pete and Schneider have been whiffing in the draft for years and Russ kept you relevant. Seahawks are officially the worst team in the division now. Lol 😆

Same and totally disagree. They tired the 'let Russ cook' and it didn't work. It led to an offense that would repeatedly go 3 and out while Russ would keep looking for a deep ball. Russ didn't want to play within the system anymore. Russ said Pete has his way of winning and I have mine. That's not going to work. I think the Hawks made the right choice in letting him go. Aging QB who is limited in what he does who is asking for a silly big payday. Let Denver figure out if they want to sell out the organization or if Russ is happy not making the playoffs yet alone a Superbowl after this season. I think Denver is at best the 3rd best team in their division.

It was second down, the clock was running, and Seattle had one time out left. A pass play was the right call. The receiver (Lockette) ran a lazy route and Wilson's throw was high. A throw like that must be down, just encase the ball would not be batted up. If Seattle ran the ball and was stopped, a timeout would have been called. Guaranteeing 3rd down being a pass play. No team wants to be that position. Belichick was a genius for letting the clock run and make the other team panic.

The 49ers.beat the Cowboys, Packers and gave the Rams all it could handle, using that exact formula. Very strong defense, run the ball and that was with JG. The Titans used that very same formula, and that was with a retread QB. It's not so much that it's a antiquated system, it's that Seattle didn't have the talent to run that system. Pete brought a winning culture to Seattle, brought a SB to Seattle,and now SOME fans want to throw him to the curb and under the bus. Seattle is guilty of poor drafting and not getting the pieces to run Pete's style of play. Pete is guilty of interference with their scouts and GM in drafting, trading and free agent signings, no doubt..

It appears to be the "Pete Carroll" show in Seattle. As well, Greg Olsen gave his feedback and observations about his time in the Seattle locker room. Greg said he noticed different ideologies with regard to Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll - offence minded player vs a defense minded coach. Greg said he was surprised at the plays they would call and other plays they would shy away from. Jody Allen appears to have given Pete full control of the Seahawks. As well, Seahawks didn't protect Wilson well. When you look at the defense stats - Seattle ranked pretty low to last place in some categories these past years. I feel like Seattle could have done much more with Russell Wilson. We'll see what happens with Seattle this coming year in the rebuild phase.

Man you’re really selling Wilson a little high here. He’s already in retirement mode. He stopped being a football player first and foremost a while ago, he cares more about his off the field pop-culture persona now than he does about superbowls. And he never proved himself to *really* be one of the greats in my eyes. His bread and butter was scrambling until coverage broke down. That gets you wins against bad to average teams but doesn’t always work against good teams.

What happened? I think the answer is easy and straight forward. Pete Carol has a specific vision for Seattle that's centered around defense and ball control. Russell Wilson had a vision for the Seahawks that centered around him. I don't blame Wilson, but I also think the Seahawks were right to go with Carol. Wilson was in his prime when he was a threat to run. For the past several years, he's become a pocket passer who can't make every read and throw due to his height. He's usually at his best when he's scrambling or throwing deep. Consequently, there were a lot of 3 and outs. I imagine Pete Carol has a large ego, but I suspect Wilson's ego is massive. I think that's why he married a celebrity. That's why he tweets his good deeds. That's why he's in GQ. He likes the spotlight and wants to be the man. If he's not the man in Denver, I'll be curious to see what happens.

everything went downhill around the Ciara time. I do agree that Wilson was the guy to just not make mistakes and if need be, win it at the end. Pete limited his plays with his run run philosophy. The % may be closer but that was because in the 4th they might throw 80% which covered the difference. it was watching a team run into a wall over and over some games until Russ and the OC were allowed to say well we have 2 scores to make up we now have to throw the ball.

His height isn't a factor, ie Drew Brees & Russ might not be able to make reads like Brees but he can physically make the throws & has a stronger arm than Brees & similar height. Problem was that Pete went against his vision of D & ball control cuz of his ego when he went with Russ over Beast Mode losing the SB. The Wilson Seattle era was great and currently better than the Rodgers GB era (having achieved more in less time). They were the best NFC team overall (results combined) since he was drafted, the only one that can compare in the NFC is LA. One NFC and one SB Championship. Eversince that preseason game against the Patriots, every viewer understood why Matt Flynn was not going to start, eventhough just breaking a GB QB record in that one game he was allowed to start for Rodgers superteam.

As a 49er fan, we know just how talented Russell Wilson and the Seahawks have been over the years. But there was always ONE thing that held them back. Playcalling. Whenever they would run the ball, as a 49er fan, I breathed a sigh of relief, because it meant one less play where Wilson has a chance to rip your heart out. Why did this happen? The Seahawks didn’t use Russ as they should have. He got frustrated by the game plan (run first), and the lack of a quality OL. Then he saw how successful Tom and Matt were at TB and LA. So he decided he wanted to go in the same direction. A new team with a decent chance at winning it all. So John and Pete decided it was time to rebuild. So that’s the plan. I’m not confident they will be anywhere close to being as successful as they were with #3, but this is where the GM and the coach have to ‘fish or cut bait’. If this move doesn’t work out, both John and Pete will be gone.

This is a great point. Seattle has been a good-to-great team over the time Russ has been there, but they are far from being a dynasty. From their start to Holmgren, they were the definition of "mediocre." Holmgren's whole tenure? only twelve games over .500. Carroll's reign has been far better than that, but with only the one SB win, it's not a dynasty. The Legion of Boom started falling apart almost the moment the nickname was coined, and like the OP said, nobody has been terrified to play them for years. The last ten or so years, the Seahawks have undeniably good, and sometimes great. during that time, the Patriots have won three SBs, and the Seahawks haven't been to one since 2014. Russell Wilson just gave up he did not have the heart for it anymore. Your problems follow you where ever you go. Just because he went to Denver doesn't mean his problems are not following him!
