Atlantic City has a lot to offer besides casinos. There's the beach, the boardwalk, restaurants, Gardner's Basin, Steel Pier and shops. There is outlet shopping. Sure you can say what happened to it, but there still is a lot of good and fun things to do in Atlantic City. I forgot to mention jet skiing and parasailing.

Sure, if you want to be harassed by beggars asking for money. There is only one real amusement pier for kids and the shops are all high end and who can afford them. The fun is gone on AC, and nothing will revive it until it’s safe to go beyond the lights of the casino with doors and windows locked. And something to do for other folk who don’t gamble

Three things that the federal government did that hurt the city. 1) Running down the hotels along the boardwalk by seizing them and converting them into hospitals for veterans returning home from WW2. 2) An overabundance of federally subsidized low income housing. 3) Requiring sand dunes to be built which eventually blocked the ocean view from the boardwalk.

I love the galaxy brain thinking that leads someone to "the hotel rooms are so expensive so nobody goes there." It's like the old Yogi Berra joke about the restaurant no one goes to anymore because it's too crowded. There's a reason it's impossible to find a room during summer weekends, it's still a massively popular resort town!

Being a lifelong New Jersey native, AC was part of the "Shore trips" I made growing up. However, due to it being somewhat dangerous and the nightlife, my parents always opted for family friendly Ocean City, NJ & Wildwood. That was circa the early 90's. I do have fond sports memories of attending multiple WWE(WWF at the time) events there and seeing comedians such as Kevin James & Rich Little.

Atlantic City's future is not "questionable" or "bleak". The casinos have had some of their best-ever earnings in the first quarter of 2021. The sports betting and online wagering are also important assets that have helped AC to rebound. And, the fact that Atlantic City is one of only two beaches in the state that are free is also something that is very favorable. The beach bars are also very popular attractions. AC continues to work toward more "family-friendly" attractions, such as what is planned for the Showboat Hotel on the boardwalk. I have no vested interest in any of these properties and I don't gamble (other than a $20 dollar "donation" once or twice a year) but I do have a keen interest in seeing Atlantic City continue their renaissance. The Atlantic City Convention Center is one of the best in the country.

I really like AC too, but lets not sugarcoat things. AC still hasn't matched its gaming revenue peak from 2006. As you said Rick, sports betting has really pumped up the numbers, but a lot of those bets are placed online and it simply doesn't create the number of jobs that in-person gaming does. How many workers were employed in AC casinos in 2006 compared to 2022? The Hilton, Sands, Showboat, and Trump Plaza are closed/long gone. Walk through Bally's Wild West and most of it is empty with a broken train and discounted drinks. How is the Pier at Caesars doing these days? Now it looks like ShopRite is going to pull out of its $1 a year lease and not come to AC. AC Convention Center "one of the best in the country?!" Are you kidding? Have you been to conventions in say Orlando, Vegas, or San Diego?

Yeah Jersey lost the monopoly but I disagree in terms of the decline, at least in the past recent years. Things were looking up before covid. The free beach concerts, seafood festival, beer festival, food truck festivals, artists like Post Malone, J Balvin, Marc Anthony, etc were all different streams of revenue the city was banking on and that's what was starting to make AC different. This past weekend was EXTREMELY packed so hopefully they recover sooner rather than later

Atlantic City could possibly out survive Vegas. It's near the ocean and huge cities and a heavily populated state. The top notch beaches alone could lead to AC being a top destination for years to come. Even now AC is still the #2 destination behind Vegas. AC is in the process of considering two measures that would put them ahead of the new casinos in PA and DE. That would be the legalization of cannabis. Yep... imagine being able to legally smoke at the casino. The other is a measure that would allow alcohol in closed containers on the boardwalk. Places would make drinks to go where people could stroll the boardwalk drink in hand!
@rwboa22
@rwboa22 3 жыл бұрын
Another way that AC could still compete with other states could be a Federal law that limits full sports betting to only Nevada, Atlantic City, and Federally-recognized Native American nations and grandfather Delaware for parlay betting during the College Football and NFL seasons. Elsewhere, where most states have their casinos at horse racing tracks, they would be restricted to only betting on horse races. The only reason Nevada has an advantage over anywhere else is that Vegas changed and adapted itself as a Disneyland for adults, yet also, except for Clark County, permits legal prostitution.

I work in Atlantic City and have lived there in the past. If the $ from the casino redevelopment fund taken from visitors parking, you know that extra dollar of the $50 event parking you pay to see a "free" concert, went back to the people of Atlantic City, it would've been tremendous. The city started developing on the bay area, that Harrahs / Borgata / Golden Nugget area, because it's away from foot traffic. So rather than investing in it's people, it invested to get away from it's people. Meanwhile, "greyhound therapy," the practice of other towns taking their homeless and in need of mental health population and sticking them on a one-way ticket to AC never really stopped. Every other neighboring state legalized gambling and has casinos, so there's increased competition. I thought for a while that AC should legalize cannabis and try to get the Cannabis Cup, an international event with no home, to take place out of the AC Convention Center, to retain that "there's something legal here that isn't legal in the rest of the state" attraction point, but I guess someone in a high place really just wanted to invest as a city in those beach concerts, which had little to no long term effects on the city. The AC Boardwalk is also boring, with Ocean City, Wildwood, and virtually every other local boardwalk having more unique stores per mile than AC by a wide margin. Block after Block of Casino awnings on the boardwalk makes for a weird experience. Visitors kind of come and are confused. THIS is the famous AC Boardwalk? There's been development in recent years: Stockton University has some dorms where the old ACHS used to be, and The Walk's outside shopping outlets are still a thing. But it's a city that's main industry, the casinos, just went through a mass exodus a few years back, before Covid, and during Covid most remaining casinos liquidated a big percentage of their employees. This is an issue that rebranding isn't going to fix. There just isn't a reason to go here, and the local population isn't enough, and shouldn't have to, make up the slack for the slow of tourist traffic caused by watering down of the entire AC experience over 30 years.

I remember going to Atlantic City in early 60’s. I wanted to see that famous horse on the pier dive ,from way high, into a relatively small pool of water. Boy was I disappointed when I finally paid to see “the show” and realized that the horse didn’t actually “dive” into that pool of water. What actually happened was the platform the horse was standing on was collapsed from under him and he literally FELL. The process was exactly how they hang people, but without the rope tied to his neck. I can only imagine how that horse felt each time he was put on the elevator to be hoisted up to that platform.

They really only go for concerts, comedy shows, parties the hotels and casinos put on for holidays like NYEs, Halloween, and Christmas. And there's many indoor pools in the major hotels in AC too. Yes, a huge portion of AC is the beach even though a good chunk of us NJ people don't go to the AC beach cause it's not the cleanest but it does bring in some traction during the summer months. During the winter and Fall, the beach turns into places for events. Theres fireworks on the beach during NYE and I saw an ad once for ice sculpting contest on the beach once too. And a gigantic arcade just opened for kids at the showboat and next year at this time there will be an indoor water park which will attract more families with kids .Wildwood is way overpriced the prices for rooms are ridiculous Atlantic City you can get a great bargain and have the beach and have the gambling Atlantic City offers much more than Wildwood .in wildwood you can walk the broad walk with your kids and go on the rides and eat at a bunch of hamburger joints that's fine if that's what you want ..but if you are an adult there's much more to do in Atlantic City there are great high-end restaurants . .in wildwood the prices of the rooms are much much more money than Atlantic City.in Wildwood the motels are like motel 6s they couldn't compare with the great hotels in Atlantic City

The biggest problem in Atlantic City is the same problem Las Vegas had at one time. Corruption. Even during those times in Las Vegas, they still made sure to put money into the city and casinos. Atlantic City's corrupt government ended up with large amounts of money in their pockets, rather than reinvesting in the city. Since the beginning, the casino/boardwalk area and the rest of the city are two completely different zones. There is extreme poverty RIGHT NEXT TO extreme wealth. If the government did its job PROPERLY, it would have used all that tax income from the casinos to build up infrastructure and lift up its people from their severe economic situation. Atlantic City could have been more...

The local government of Atlanta City really are frustrating. Ever since the "success" of the casinos in the late 70's, they've been obsessed with trying to find this next big "Quick Fix" to the city's problems, that simply doesn't exist. If they really wanted to help the City, they'd address the real issues effecting it like the homeless problem, the drugs, the crime, the lack of jobs outside of tourism and the casinos, and the high cost of living. If they would address just one or two of these issues, than people would consider coming back and actually have some hope for the city, but they just won't.

ALL of these places have a certain cachet built over decades that other places do not. Also, Las Vegas and Macao have large dedicated airports, so it is easy to fly in an out of, which really helps. Monaco? You fly into Nice and go by train, limo, car, or yacht along the French Riviera to get there, but to stay in Monaco you need large stacks of money.

This so sad bc I grew up in Atlantic City and still live pretty close by, I got back all the time. I’m 24 now but when I was growing up there I never new it used to be a much brighter place filled with more life and less crime, always just thought poverty and crime was always how it was. When I got older of course I caught on but it’s just sad to say my home city in such bad condition especially when I got family there still, don’t even get me started on old friends I lost due to crime.

The beach and boardwalks are great and as long as you stay in the hotels/casinos you’re fine. But that’s it. You don’t want to “explore” the city after dark. I’ve been going to AC for years and the city outside the aforementioned areas are still full off strung out junkies and beggars and the parts of the city that aren’t flush with money are run down and dilapidated. That’s always been AC or at least in the 17 years that I’ve been going there.

AC always did have a shady side, but not like this.

One of the main problems was the three states surrounding the state of New Jersey opening casinos, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York, also, the state of New Jersey allowed casinos to be in North Jersey

Atlantic City needs to model itself after Hollywood Florida or Venice beach California. More affordable housing and high end condos. Develop the city People don’t really go to casinos just to gamble but to experience the dining and nightlife options. Las Vegas knows this. Stop blaming poor people ( ghettos ) for the mistakes of corrupt and short sighted bad city planning. How is a casino town broke ? Where’s the money going ?

I came here for the weekend. Haven’t been here since summer the 2012, a few months shy of Hurricane Sandy. I can tell the charm it had when I was last here it’s not the same. This place lost so many attractions and it’s literally nothing here. Idk what happened but coming here this weekend made me realize how much stuff was gone. It’s literally a shit hole.
