Can he just reverse back? That would have been the smart thing to do then going forwards far into sodor during the decay. Also he could have been following Kaitlyn.

Streamlined engines, like Connor, are not meant to go fast backwards. One is for safety, two is for his streamlining, and three is because of visibility for his crew. Connor can go backwards but in terms of express train speeds, it would be more dangerous than good
