Agreed, for the most part. If it's creativity you're looking for, I wouldn't look to AAA devs. They focus test to try to appeal to the widest audience possible, which often dilutes the games mechanics. I would look to Indie devs, those who have nothing to lose. Granted, indie games often take a very long time to make in comparison, just look at Silksong, but the gaming world's smash hits from the past ten or more years have been indie games. Hollow knight, Terraria, Minecraft (originally, its backed by Microsoft now), Super Meat Boy, etc. all have non-triple A ideals at their core (especially difficulty). ULTRAKILL is one of my favorite games ever, and, while technically not an indie game since its being published by New Blood, has an absurdly small team that started out with one dude. FROM software's now incredibly popular souls series originally spawned from a company that was on the brink of collapse, Demon's Souls was popular enough for them to create Dark Souls. These teams had NOTHING TO LOSE, and were able to stretch their creative muscles a lot more because of it. They had passion for their games while making them, look for passion! I'm 23, and have been playing games my whole life, and I haven't lost hope. I think its more about where you look. In the past ten years, big companies have realized that video games are insanely profitable, and try to maximize their profits by making the most widely applicable, journalist friendly pieces of junk on the planet. I found it funny that in the list of games you were excited for, you put two remakes/remasters, which I think comprise a lot of what is wrong with gaming nowadays. I am so tired of remasters, its lazy and uninspired. I understand making your game available for more platforms, but to make your big release for the year a remaster is so lazy and is a blatant cash grab. PORT YOUR GAMES AS A SIDE PROJECT! I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOUR NEW LIGHTING ENGINE! The fact that these games also are eligible for GOTY awards is also very silly for me, especially when they take SO much less work to make when compared to a new game. Remakes are a little better, I mostly hate seeing people compare them to the originals nonstop and get super mad over it. Don't get me wrong, there are some remakes/remasters that I love, but its so tiresome to see all the time and I'd usually rather play the original. Unfortunately, I partially disagree with your point about "triple A companies not caring what gamers want anymore", cause there are so many people out there who still buy the worst games I've ever seen. This goes along with my focus testing point, they do know what works to sell games, they just can't predict what the next hit game mechanic will be (battle royales, for example, were huge when Fortnite and PUBG first hit the scene) which I think is part of your point, they don't want to make something fun necessarily, they want to make something that makes money. I cannot believe, for example, that people buy Blizzard games. Blizzard is like a specialized group of experts who know how to release a great game, and then ruin it over the course of the next couple years. And their recent releases have been awful or uninspired. Also, I don't understand why people buy these "movie games" that are coming out, like The Last of Us 2 and God of War Ragnarok. Dragon's Dogma 2 recently got its first trailer and I'm super excited about that. Itsuno is a visionary and loves making games, so whenever he works on a title, I know I'm gonna like it. He also worked on FF16, which I expect to be hailed as an incredible game. Sorry for the disorganized rant. Thanks for posting this video!
