What happened to Gas Monkey Garage?

The Gas Monkey Garage was the Dallas-based custom auto shop behind the successful reality TV show “Fast N’Loud,” aired on Discovery Channel and featuring Richard Rawlings. He and his team would search for decrepit and worn-down classic cars all over the US, and restore them in the garage. In each episode, the team, which was composed of brilliant fabricators and mechanics, worked to a strict deadline to rebuild those rusty, often abandoned old classics into beautifully restored hot rods, and Richard would sell them, frequently earning a huge profit for the shop. The TV series premiered back in June 2012, and aired for eight years with its final airing in June 2020.

I watched another video which said when the discovery deal ended, the old team were released (after Kaufman leaving) as part of their salaries were paid by discovery to fulfill TV obligations. Makes sense. Now he's solo he's has a new team which he can afford. Simple business economics. I prefer Gas monkies new format. Less TV bull, and just real stuff.

Used to watch this until all the drama and personal life nonsense was added in. Began recording the shows so I could skip those parts. Last couple shows I fast forwarded through took about 12 minutes, since there was only about 8-10 minutes of the crew actually working on the cars.

Initially I loved the show for the first few seasons it aired, but it quickly became way too much drama, and so much of it was manufactured. Every episode was some stupid deadline they had to meet or "we're gonna lose the shop!" But, Richard was the real reason I quit watching...he's just too unlikable. He's unquestioningly a great and savvy businessman, but success also went straight to his head, and unfortunately, "great businessman" and "douchebag piece of shit" often go hand-in-hand.

Here's the deal. Richard made a lot of money from doing fast and loud on Discovery. His team were also on Discovery's payroll that's why they all left when the show ended. Richard could not afford to pay all of these guys a salary without discovery income. And it would make no sense to keep 5-7 guys around with no show to film since all of the cars being built were being built because of the show and not because a "client". Richard is smart. All of his shop people now are young kids with the exception of Phipps. Less money for Richard to pay. There are very few builds these days because builds don't pay without a TV show. He goes around buying cars and eating tacos. He makes advertising money from you tube and deals with very little overhead. So keep watching his videos on youtube. Richard doesn't need to build cars in 30 days anymore for a TV show to be Rich.

Well said. These sorts of shows are SO misleading. There is no way in hell they could have built the cars they did for what Richard said they cost, and the claimed time it took to built them. In addition, for what the cars sold for, there was no way in hell they would have been making any money. All these businesses are only viable as long as the Discovery financing is in play. "Gold Rush" is another good example. The amount of gold those guys were finding would not have even paid the bills if they weren't subsidized by Discovery.

I wish they would work on my Tracker..I put it in the shop to have a belt noise fixed and they Broke the bracket. .They broke the bolt hole that the bracket hooked to.. And the part is imposable to find so they gave the fan and the broken parts and said we cant find the part.. They said drive home fast.. WHAT.. They Broke my car and said sorry about your luck.. It was just a show that had its run. Truth is there isnt a bunch of guys lined up to have cars restored. People who want a classic usually want them already done and they usually get ripped off. I bought a classic once, a nice unmolested 66 GTO which I proceeded to pour 50k into 12 years ago. Still have it, drive it about a dozen times a year.

Rawlings ego is the size of Texas. Too arrogant and full of himself for my liking. They took junk cars and jury rigged them together and sold them to unsuspecting fools. The original crew was okay when the show first came on but as Rawlings ego and wallet got bigger, the quality of the show and the cars never improved. A bunch of hacks building junk only amuses people so long. After seeing Aaron the so called engine genius blow up multiple motors on the show, he never impressed me either. His own show was a total flop.

The red headed spray painter, I liked him, he left, but the icing on the cake for me was when Aaron left the show. After Aaron left, I never watched another episode.
