As an employee of Steamforged from the release of Kickoff until the launch of Farmers/Blacksmiths, this was interesting to watch and see what happened after my exit from the company. Thanks!

I still get an occasional Guildball game. I am going to a tournament in Leeds in January. I bought and painted all the guilds. But have not managed to play all of them yet. The bad mouthing from the senior management at SFG then Covid really took the wind out of the community. But there is still the group you found. They have done a great job. I backed the Lamplighters. Currently in the painting queue on my desk. Sacking all the game developers after ignoring the opinions of the play testers are two more reasons why they folded the game. They were told that the Miners were over power before the release. Then let them out unchanged. Swore blind that everything was find right up to pulling the plug. Antagonised local game stores too. Glad you found the game. It is really good.

Excellent vid... very good overview. I loved the lore of GB and while I was never great at the game, I always enjoyed it. I'm glad the game is back now, albiet on a print to order form.

Think to properly understand guildball you need to understand mkii warmachine as that was the community that largely formed the early guildball. It was from that the hyper-competitive tournament focused culture formed. And one of the GB creators were former designers of WM/H. The last thing is at the most competitive end there could get broken if you understood it well. If you were the better brawling team often “killing the ball”, basically burying it deep in your own zone, against all but the most agile of teams was advisable. Fun game, great casts, but it wasn’t sustainable. Another logistics issue not touched on is the difficulty for a LGS to stock the whole line (another issue mkii Warmachine shared).

Interesting video. I remember looking into the game years ago, but everyone I asked about it said it was a "solved" game and not worth getting into unless I was interested in a super competitive scene. So I never played it.

Guild Ball got me back into miniature gaming after almost 20 years away from the hobby. I used to work for Games-Workshop and their practices killed my love of anything tabletop. Then Steamforged blamed their community and it felt like GW all over again. :(

I’ve got a play group in GA. I have quite a few teams and love the community project (I’ll be 3D printing the Lamplighters once the STL files are made public).

I think the game wasn’t bloated at all, but kinda suffered from the ruleset being extremely crisp, no-bullshit style (something a lot of games need nowadays, looking at Malifaux 3E). Basically, there wasn’t really any design space to go to (which we can already witness in the community project, it’s the same rules all over) without fundamentally upsetting the game’s balance (shepherd’s guild, their latest release, was kinda broken in half, miner’s guild defied the basic principles of the game and turned into “can the miners player fail the scoring roll”). With nowhere to expand without a major overhaul (they did think about introducing missions and even tried it in one of the prerelease events, but that iteration sucked), there was no real business reason to dedicate resources to the game. I’ve recently played a couple of matches after a 2-year break and it just felt samey and repetitive, like any competitive matches I’ve played before. Previously, the cure would be buying into a new guild (which was cheap compared to other games), but that resource is also limited. All in all, GB was an amazing tournament game that was actually kept alive by the competitive spirit around it, but wasn’t good enough to last in the long run.

Maulifuax dosent nessecarily need less rules. The point of the game is much less of a competitive game but one of infinite expansion. The game by its nature and purpose can not have no bullshit rules. The point is to be a super flavorful game, something diffrent from typical war games. That being said, certain abilities need to be combined since they do the same thing but have a diffrent name.
