interesting fact: this game was originally set to be released on the Dreamcast.

The difficult control scheme is the entire point of Gunvalkrie. The game is 100% about mastering the controls. Like NiGHTS, the sparsely populated levels with enemies with almost no AI would not work in a game with normal controls, that was focused on normal game objectives. Each level forced you to get better with the controls to pass, and BECAUSE the game was built around mastering control rather than fighting enemies, the level design got INCREDIBLY inventive for the time, fully utilizing the power of the XBOX to do things that had never been done. Once mastered, the game gave you a sort of freedom that was unparalleled. Like many of things that are great, the average person did not recognize the beauty and Genesis of Gunvalkrie game design and instead chastised it for not meeting average expectations.

Gunvalkyrie and Jet Set Radio Future were the only two games I've ever owned for my OG Xbox. I had been given a free Xbox by a friend and immediately went out and bought JSRF. I bought Gunvalkyrie once I'd learned that it was also made by SmileBit, and because the cover art is so cool.

Love this game. So happy to see it on the backwards compatibility list after an actual 20 years. Now I can play it whenever I want without lugging out the old Xbox. It has some real speedrun potential, too.

Isn't it funny that all of the games you mentioned were only on Xbox exclusives? And I'd add blinx the time sweeper to that list which was one of my favorites from that time. Jet set radio was an amazing game that I definitely wish continued on. The only PlayStation exclusives in contrast became household names. Spyro, crash Bandicoot, Devil may cry and metal gear solid to name a few

I loved this game! Too many people complained about the controls and killed all chances for a sequel.

I definitely have a lot of fond memories of this game it was really really good tho I do hold it responsible for breaking more than one xbox controller joystick lol! I really loved its art, world building, and unique gameplay even to this day. I hope it gets a port or something it just has to. I think its ripe for an anime adaptation too

I remember back in early 2002 this game was being called more metroid than metroid prime lol this was back then when Metroid Prime 1 had a lackluster closed doors showing at E3 2001. I think if this game had better controls and a bit more variety, it could have done better. I enjoyed the game for what it was, it was a challenge but fun.

Wasn’t it imposible to take the y axis out of inverted mode? It’s because of this game that I now play inverted. I miss this game so much !

One of the biggest problems with this game is the way the stroy is told. Or rather, the way it's not told at all past the opening cinematic. Instead you just wander through levels without any context as to where you are and what you're trying to accomplish. Even your character gets zero development. I played this game to death and it was super cool with rock solid gameplay, but with the clunky controls, abstract levels and obscured story with no dialog or character development, it was a hard gane to like
