KZbinrs used to earn money so that they could make videos, but now they make videos so that they can earn money
Minecraft content is unbearable.
In todays video I talk about the repetitive nature of Minecraft videos on KZbin. Minecraft content used to be different and original depending on who you watch, but now it's all just 100 days, minecraft hardcore, and worse versions of Dream manhunts.
Songs used in order:
SNEAKO TYPE BEAT - KANYE WEST (not an official song)
Gusty Garden Theme - Super Mario Galaxy
Beginners Theme Suite - Rogerl Neills
Star Festival - Super Mario Galaxy
Beginners Theme Suite - Rogerl Neills (again)
Sweden - C418
Mice on Venus - C418
Sweden - C418 (again)
Irl shots were recorded on Sony a6400 with a 35mm prime lens

I couldn’t agree more, it feels like no matter the space, the genre, or game, there is always going to be a formula people will make and follow. Minecraft is arguably one of the most extreme examples of this, but even for content like Halo, rust, other survival games, even TF2, there is that formula that people follow because it gets them views, even if they may want to make something different.

Dude this is exactly what I did last year. I was trying to make the same videos as everyone else because I wanted to make money, even though I said I didn't, I knew I did, I just wouldn't admit it to myself. From mid 2022 - mid 2023, I made one video because nothing was getting views and I didn't want to put in the time anymore, as I had been for years at that point ant saw nothing from it. Thats when I decided to just switch it all up and make videos I WANTED to make. I basically changed from doing the stale challenge video, to videos where I just chat with the viewer about a certain topic I want to speak on with Minecraft gameplay in the background. That was the best decision I ever made because I instantly started making more videos, but making them when I felt like it and it really took this pressure off me that I didn't even realize was there. Not to mention the fact that I got a lot more views and subs from these videos and still do when I upload. Imo, this happened because I wasn't competing with the highest Minecraft youtubers anymore, I wasn't TRYING to compete with anyone anymore really. Its been great to just take a step back and carve out my own little cave so to say that I can enjoy while everyone else is scrambling for crumbs basically. I enjoy the fruits of my labor, not in the form of money (yet) but in the form of likes and comments that I can reply too and have fun discussions with people who enjoy my content. Its great, and to anyone else, if you feel stuck making content, just take a step back, it might be the best choice you ever make!

Success on KZbin is correlated with establishing your own identity on the platform. If you try to imitate others, chances are you'll just get lost in the sea of cookie-cutter content. People who want the kind of content you make just end up watching a few of the thousands of other channels producing it. But if you make something that doesn't really appear anywhere else, your odds are a lot better because you'll have a much better chance of catching wandering viewers who are looking for that thing.

Exactly, i think what you need to have fun doing youtube and grow is an identity that people can relate to or atleast get to know. If i watch X's 100days in Minecraft challenge, they tell me what they did in those 100 days kinda like a diary and afterwards Y's & Z's 100 days challenges do the same, they have no personality. One built a cooler base, one made a redstone contraption, but in the big picture it doesn't matter. Imagine you are at a party talking to a dude and he only goes on and on about how he did that, and then he did that. You would just think "cool stuff" but you don't really get to know the person in a sense of what they like, what they dislike, what are their hobbies. This is what 100 days challenges are to me in comparison to the old let's plays. In let's plays people needed to talk constantly so there wouldn't be many quiet spots in the video. Usually to fill that space they talked about stuff from their lives or gave opinions on certain matters, which made the videos more enjoyable. I watch a youtuber group which did a lot of minecraft content in the 2010's, adventure maps, smp and hardcore with 15min hardcut videos. In those 15 minutes they talked about a plethora of things, recent world events, game news, politics, anything that came to mind. And that made it more engaging. Being different and having a personality kinda gets lost in all these videos.

KZbin is truly just a reflection of why people say 'Minecraft isn't fun anymore.' As you demonstrated so well (great video, really underrated), Minecraft is a sandbox game, the one rule being they are no rules, and yet the community has made a set of rules for themselves that they so strictly follow. Instead of rushing through the game to create the largest mega base, the most OP armor, just do what YOU want to do. Explore the (kind of) amazing new updates, big or small, take your dog on an adventure, build and experiment, and create your own story. Great video though, this is really well made, I wish you luck in the future!

It's not that creativity is punished, it's that some formats are just significantly more rewarded. What we can do as a community is to watch and promote your favorite creators that you think deserve more recognition.

Unfortunately I think those times on KZbin are both long past and still here. The issue is, those who try to incorporate the spirit of older content are buried under the massive influx of users on the site. Channels like your own are extremely well executed but are criminally under rated because the algorithm scoffs in their face. KZbin itself is no longer about passion. The internet is not longer about passion. It’s a harsh but sad truth. Though even though content made with heart is burried, doesnt mean it is not there. Going on to the search options, and going to “newest upload” is a great way to still discover content of passion.

Yep, doing youtube as a career will no longer allow you to do what you want unfortunately most of the time. That because of the rise of youtube shorts and TikTok which lowered the attention span of most kids considerably making it pretty much borderline impossible to get good retention rate without over editing to the extreme to have a video reach thounsand of views easily because as soon as it gets past you own KZbin viewers it will get buried so no opportunity for a career without going for metas. So personally I run my channel like it was a small hidden cave on the sea of popular KZbin videos and if anyone finds it they are free to join and experience an authentic KZbinr.

I grew my channel at first using trends like 100 days, but I saw most of my real growth when I used my own ideas. My mod videos were the first of their kind and I used simple editing and gave little to no incentive to watch until the end, yet they were extremely successful. I think the real problem is people aren't creative enough, if you make something unique, original, and objectively entertaining, you will grow. and if you're not growing, keep innovating until you do- not by adding more subtitles or more intense music, but by inventing new ideas.

I think you might be seeing the forest for the trees. Countless KZbinrs are still uploading Minecraft videos they want to make, there’s far more Minecraft content that’s genuine and heartfelt and maintaining those nostalgic experiences that were popular on KZbinr 8+ years ago than there is Minecraft hardcore 100 day megabuld challenge content. It’s just damn near impossible to find it because the algorithm doesn’t want to show that content to you. The problem isn’t that creativity is dead, it’s that creativity is hidden. KZbin only wants to show you what’s popular, and like it or not this is what’s popular, so this is what KZbin’s going to promote and try to convince you Minecraft KZbin’s become. If you want to find that genuine and creative Minecraft content, maybe search for Minecraft and filter the results not by recommended, but by upload date. Watch some of the recent uploads, the ones with shitty thumbnails with 2 views. You’ll find what you’re looking for, and maybe watch enough of it and the algorithm will recognize that’s the side of Minecraft you want to see

The irony isn't lost on me with this video, how so many people these days are making videos like this, complaining about minecraft content's lack of originality. Life is a cycle. I think that a major factor that comes into play here with this increasingly energetic editing and megalomaniacal concepts (I could not find a better term to use, I just mean that with every video the challenges grow more and more extreme) is the current "culture" on the internet, one that values quick, loud abd stimulating content. This cycle is caused by short attention spans, which causes others' attention spans to deteriorate even further. Also another thing to note is that the audience of these challenge videos are, let's be real, kids. And not all children can appreciate the finer details of a good minecraft video, they come here to entertain themselves and watch their favourite internet funny men scream through their microphones. And such content watched from a young age can undoubtedly have an impact on the development of a person. But well, the question is, what can ya do?

I really enjoyed this essay since it's something that I resonate a lot with. Although I think it unintentionally takes a hit at videos that DO have that substance you want to see revived in Minecraft content. While there is so much to this game and what it has to offer on KZbin, I wouldn't entirely blame the creators for doing what they have to in order to get seen. KZbin as a platform thrives off of watch time, so without making unique or engaging content in any way, there is a very low chance for those videos to get "picked up" by any algorithm. I've seen some truly talented and insanely creative creators use trending ideas to their advantage and make some of the best videos ever. Personally, I was able to find the fine line between "MrBeast-ification" and passion in my craft, which for most is kind of hard when KZbin shoves numbers and Up/Down arrows in your face pretty much telling you that your video sucks or that you've struck gold and now you have to make that content forever. This is probably one of the biggest struggles for most creators and is why so many people are quitting their existing channels to find something else more fulfilling. Also, I understand the struggle with not really seeing the content you like within Minecraft, but to be real KZbin's "Don't Recommend Channel/Not Interested" buttons work like a charm. I've only really been getting suggested Minecraft video essays/Alpha Minecraft content ever since I started blocking out the videos I don't want to see. Minecraft is one of the largest genres on this platform as a whole, so there is definitely content to your liking out there, it's probably just hidden underneath a very poorly done title and thumbnail. sorry for the yapping! this is a good video, I just think it's unfair to group such a large sum of creators and say their content is 'unauthentic' just because some people have non-aligning intentions with content creation... That being said, it's all Notch's fault for selling Minecraft to Microsoft.

The entirety of Minecraft content being 'stale' can be represented by looking at your channel's most recent videos: 1. You make a point in this video that Minecraft videos are constantly using the same topics over and over, and you encourage people to return to what makes them feel creatively empowered. 2. You have playthrough videos posted on your channel, I imagine you made these to feel creatively empowered. However, they don't really have any views, making KZbin completely inoperable from a business standpoint. That's fine if that's your goal, but many people look to KZbin as a dream career, and a career kinda has to make money. If you stop making money you stop being able to upload once life gets serious with a family. Then Minecraft content is almost exclusively reserved for people who have the most free time, aka kids and people in gap years. 3. You post this video, which ironically enough is a trend. There are many other Minecraft essay videos talking about the exact same things. You did a trend, got views, got subs, and then your next video you post reflects the same 'niche' as this video. 4. Welcome to the club! You are now doing the thing you talked about not wanting to see on KZbin. As a side note, I do also hope that we as creators can continue to evolve the niche and move past the current trends.

this is honestly why i'm switching to being more of a general content kind of guy. im gonna make whatever i feel like but in my own unique style and with my humor implemented and my personality implemented. Whether its fortnite, minecraft, horror, etc it'll be whatever I play with my own style added onto it. I hate the new style (which I imitated because I felt it was the only way to success) and people should really start being unique. The little kids that watch them really don't care about the creator but rather that one specific video or the editing.

I've been making a vanilla series lately. It hardly gets any views at all, and when I see creators of various sizes create vanilla series which perform really well, it's hard not to let that affect me. This video nails how to not compare to others or be so desperate for views, because I daresay for most people who make KZbin videos, it didn't start out of a desire for views, but out of a desire to be creative and make content you're proud of. That's how it is for me, anyway. This video is a great reminder of that ❤

This applies not just to minecraft videos but so many other aspects as well. Here's an example: A while back, an electronic music artist that goes by the alias Chime kicked off the popularity of a style of dubstep called color bass. Color bass is a style of dubstep that takes the non-melodic growls and wubs of dubstep and makes them sound colorful by giving them a melody. When this took off in popularity, it seemed like everyone and their mother was making color bass. Yes even me. It eventually got to the point where almost every single artist I listened to had at least one color bass song. Some artists even switched up their whole style entirely to focus on it. However, one thing felt wrong about it all. One of the most popular color bass songs, Rain by Papa Khan, started a trend of remixes of the song. This led to songs that were inspired by Rain, which inevitably led to every original color bass song sounding like a remix of Rain, just in a different key.

the problem is the algorithm. You need a flashy thumbnail, people who watch for a while, people who come back, unique content that strays from trends is a high risk with a mediocre reward, people would rather not take that risk. why risk losing your job for lower views, even if it's for a close community. 500 loyal subs isn't paying the bill any more then 500,000 unloyal subs.

So much visual overload, I can't stand it. I thought it was because I'm older (I'm 30), but I'm glad to see younger people have noticed that as well. The editing, the video ideas and thumbnails are so similar that you can't tell any of those channels apart and it's sad because I'm sure those people have talent and they would probably get a loyal following if they did their own thing. Where it is right now is clearly unsustainable, as seen by most of the Hermitcraft members getting burnt out in some way. I don’t think we will ever see the return of the 2012-14 LP style but I do think the next big Minecraft concept (think what LukeTheNotable did for MC content) will be much more lowkey.

Hey, new Minecraft KZbinr here who’s experience is actually a little different, I began by making a few jokey videos with me and my friends, and then branched out to a few other things. I have one particularly popular video of mine which is just me detailing my own experience in a certain mod pack and having that experience has been fantastic, I love making videos in my own style and focusing on music, sound and storytelling over too much over editing but I definitely see others do what I do with that style and get larger, lots of people want different types of Minecraft content, it’s just finding a means to break through ;). I love your style of content and never change for anyone

i’ve been watching paul sores jr old minecraft series lately. even though it’s a 40 year old monotone voice man slowly playing and explaining how to do the most trivial things in minecraft (at least nowadays) with a low quality mic, i still love it. it’s just a break from everything. youtube videos can be a break from real life sometimes, but when they’re all the same and start popping up more and more, it’s no longer a break, it’s just something to keep the dopamine in your mind flowing. when i watch his videos (often times later at night) it’s like everything good or bad that day just fades away and i become immersed with this 10 year old video. no 0 attention span editing, no canceling, no drama, no “i built the biggest XYZ in minecraft” just a block game

I rarely get suggested videos by small youtubers, yet typically they have the more unique ideas. People say 'content these days is all the same' and that's just not true, you're just looking in the wrong place. Using myself as an example, I have almost 40 episodes of my own Minecraft series on my channel. I think it's a pretty unqiue idea, at least, I haven't seen anyone else do it. The videos rarely get above 30 views, let alone 20. My editing is mostly just cuts, some zoom and B&W, and I use background music from KZbin. My builds are unimpressive and my thumbnails are not flashy. My videos are the kind of videos people say they don't see anymore; people say they want more of. I've kept up the series for over a year for my only 2 constant viewers, friends of mine. I just want to have fun. I think what people really want when they say MC content sucks nows is for large creators to go back to their old style, their old content. You all know Stampy, DanTDM, SB737, all those guys, I grew up with them, and I'm sure some of you have as well. Now that times have changed, we crave that nostalgic feeling again. We don't want new KZbinrs, we want our old ones back. Or at least be want out new ones to be just like our old ones. Now, obviously the 100 days and hardcore stuff appeals to a lot of people because it's insanely popular. Personally I've never had any interest in it. I'm not really sure where this comment is going, or if I've made any points. I don't think it matters because probably no one will read this. I'm just tired of people complaining that MC content is all the same now when it's not. I could be wrong though, this is just how I see it. Feel free to reply with your own thoughts. This was all typed on phone so I'm sure there's a typo/mistake somewhere, so if you want, go ahead and type your * comment. Thanks and have a good day.

Thanks for spreading the word, more people 100% need to hear this message. I think people tend to forget as well that Minecraft KZbinrs tend to set the trends on how people actually experience the game to. Consider Tekkit gaining popularity with the Yogscast Jaffa Factory series and so on. It's a bit upsetting after running servers over the last decade to see that players feel less confident with themselves over time with these massive youtubers building mega-bases with intense design schemes. It feels now standardized for how you should build and experience the game, impeding personal player creativity and in the end seeing less of that players personality come through what they build. I've seen many people now just flat out refuse to build or servers fill with what feels like a competition of KZbin tutorial mega-bases. Rarely ever seeing people just building something simple and enjoying it anymore.

Hey Folivore, youve made some great points. Part of my strife with modern minecraft content is that many creators lose personality in exchange for "epic grand, eye catching stuff". Hopefully, we can see a resurgence in personality-based content instead of idea-based content.

Honestly my biggest pet peeve with a lot of Minecraft KZbinrs (and a lot of KZbinrs in general) is that they tend to speak in loud over-the-top voices like they're constantly yelling and edit out the gaps inbetween sentences. I much prefer people talking normally like actual people IRL do. And while Super Mario Galaxy's ost is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, I'm curious as to why Minecraft KZbinrs always use music from the first Galaxy and not the second one. Less something I'm upset about and more something I'm confused by.

I do agree with what has been said. Myself, was (and still am) in a situation where it is tempting to take notes of the "trends" and how they do their videos, back when I made my first video. Finding a style is very tricky. However, I settled one where I received criticism from people saying it was a breath of fresh air, more align with the old Minecraft content, or original. And what have I done? I poured my passion and personality into those videos. Sure it takes me time and effort, but I can say : Those videos I made? I am proud of the results. I think it's one of the key to defeat the current mindset of Minecraft Content.

Damn this really hits hard as someone who started playing Minecraft from 1.5. I miss watching content like Stampy for example where their just having fun experiencing the game, with no pressures. I think platforms like TikTok are to blame also, it’s shortens our attentions spans meaning KZbinrs turn to these crazy editing techniques to keep retention up. I think many of the community have been inspired by some of our elder KZbinrs to start channels, but this overwhelming pressure to replicate previous successes has led to this unhealthy competitiveness in the community. As a content creator myself, I simply want to create building videos cause I want to teach people how to build, it’s what I enjoy. If I earn money from it, it’s a nice bonus but it doesn’t rule my channel. Hoping the community will fix itself soon. :) Great video!

For 4 years of my life I made hundreds of minecraft videos in hopes that what I created would be seen by a wider audience, that maybe I could even do it for a living. But overtime, that goal felt less and less obtainable not because I wasn't capable of keeping up, but because I had no interest in even watching 100 days of hardcore minecraft where they convert the end, let alone making it. I ended up finding myself in the geometry dash niche which although isn't nearly as big, still (believe it or not) has way more room for creativity with unique ideas and formats for content. Really really sucks to say it, but I'm glad minecraft content isn't my main thing anymore

huge respect to everyone still making their original type of content (people like captainsparklez, hermitcraft members, and more) these people know that if they treated their channel like a business and hired a bunch of people, they could "achieve" significantly larger numbers, but there is no point if they dont enjoy doing that. This of course doesnt mean they are making "lower quality" videos.

Most gaming content is like this. I doubt many will relate but years ago and still to this day I love Monster Hunter. It's been my favorite game series for over 12 years and back in around 2012-2015 youtube Monster Hunter content was very down to earth and was full of all sorts of content types; lore videos, videos about interesting builds or combos, weapon guides, playthroughs, monster guides, challenges, speedruns, hunt-a-thons, social events, game coverage and co-op quest runs showing co-operative strategies. Nowadays Monster Hunter content is completely overrun with non-Monster Hunter content creators one-off monster hunter video or 2-3 new age monster hunter content creators flooding the site with bloated nothingburger content every other day. It is actually very hard to find content of people just PLAYING monster hunter and I mean all of it's aspects including build crafting which is literally half of the draw of the game. That and it is way too high energy for a game with such a teetering flow of stress and relief like Monster Hunter.

Especially with how I’m trying to brand myself now, I know that not everyone one is going to like my content but I’m ok with that now. I just want to make the videos I want to make and when people love it, it means so much more because they’re liking something I’m also passionate about.

I feel like this has been an issue with KZbin in general lately and it's why I've mostly seen myself follow smaller channels, the big ones just feel boring and like a cheap copy of each other at this point. I mean I understand *why*, after all when KZbin is a job you care less about creativity and more about actually surviving, but still it feels like almost any big channel is just running out of ideas at this point, the algorithm is and always has been brutal and changes without notice and massively, and a video you put work into not doing well can be stressful. All of that is to say I understand why It is the way it is but I just wish we got to see more creative content that isn't limited to small channels and audiences. Anyway though, love your style and great vid.

I really miss old series and how they felt like someone just starting a world and replaying the game but in a different way each time, taking their time and slowly finishing medium sized projects. Now in the first chapter they get full diamond armor and tools and inmediatly start working in a colossal build, in the second chapter full perfect enchanted netherite and do another colossal build and it doesn't feel anymore like someone playing for enjoyment, it feels like someone doing the biggest build they can for the sake of people clicking on the video (which is 40% timelapse)

This was a really interesting watch adding my own two cents in As someone who has been a long time fan of mcrp content, and now even does work in that community It really mirrors the overall minecraft community, there is less well crafted stories with soul like MyStreet, with almost tv levels of quality, it's %90 pure improv, but not the good kind, the kind with soul, it's very cashgrabby, it's less about making higher quality episodes, and more about getting more episodes out Theres less unique ideas as well, it has to involve whats trendy, like skibidi toilet, garten of banban, or rainbow friends

I couldn't agree more, my channels are tiny compared to even you (You're doing great btw), but my goal is to be funny, entertaining or informative, not seeking out the veritable fountain of wealth that so many think they'll achieve because in the end I would hate making the same over produced rehashed ideas that everyone has done to death. Since I first fell into Minecraft KZbin at the ripe old age of 7 in 2013 I wanted to make my own content, I was in awe of how creative of a medium making your own videos were and that awe grew seeing the way animations and story driven Minecraft series became fully fleshed out. Sometimes I feel like maybe I've become jaded or lost that sense of wonder, and while growing older does have the effect of the latter, it's also down to the way the landscape has changed. It's also no longer that same connected rabbit hole I was so used to, now you'd be hard pressed to get all the big creators in the same Discord call compared to when a skype, teamspeak, or xbox party chat sufficed. beyond that fans now are so ride or die on their favorite creators, even one small critique will get you blasted. All around I think what you and other smaller creators show is that underground little dogs are likely more real for lack of a better word than the big fish and hopefully soon that will change, I'm not holding my breath (Because let's be real I'll be more Oxygen starved than a Pufferfish), but if the algorithm ended Let's Plays maybe, just maybe some tweak will take us out of these dark ages and let original unique ideas thrive again, it wouldn't fix the fans and it wouldn't make every creator besties with each other, but it would make things feel fresh again instead of the same idea filling the trending page. TLDR: Sorry for the novel

To be honest, Videos like these that are about discussing what happened to Minecraft Content is also starting to become a trendy youtube topic on it's own and filled with repetitiveness. Heck commentary channels that discuss the rise and falls of youtubers/mc servers, MC drama, and all that are all the same. We are in times now where this is a big opportunity to discover something new to make in the community that no one has thought about. I think dream has done this successfully by making his manhunts as they're unique for his own identity. However if we keep discussing the state of Minecraft content then we're just being distracted on finding the opportunity of uniqueness.

I wish I'd heard this two years ago. In pursuit of money and attention I began to mimic those annoying aesthetic furries. I got popular, I got views, I got money, but it all felt so hollow. I hated it. I quit art and animation because of the burn out. Putting on a mask drains you so quick. I've only now begun to animate again because I realised that I really don't care about the views. I don't care about the money. I care about art and what makes me happy. One of my fans who's been there since the start (around 2018) is still making content that he likes even though it doesn't get a gazillion views. That's inspirational to me. You'll find your people. Everything has a market. Be it art, gaming, music, etc. Don't lose sight of who you are for some stupid internet clout, because in the end it doesn't even matter.
