@@ikad5229 you're not taking into account that the spanish took litterral ship loads of gold and silver from their colonies, even rio de la plata means river of silver, they named a ducking river after the mineral they loved the most. They were exploitative with all of their colonies, and i know that because in Brazil, where i am from, we study the colonial process, and not only were native people's exterminated by disease and war, they were also forcibly 'assimilated' into the catholic religion. Lands confiscated, and slave labor was also rampant(?) (although i will cede that Brazil was the last country in the whole world to abolish slavery, it was not due to Portugal's choice to continue it, it was our imperial dumbasses not realizing the long-term impact of having 50% of your people duxking enslaved). In essence, spain fuxked the natives without lube for some 300 years non-stop, then erased much of their history, and also left the land without much in the way of rarer minerals such as the aforementioned gold, silver and yada yada. Mesoamerica and all spanish colonies are poor, and even Brazil, who's currently the stage of tge biggest shitshow you can imagine, is richer then most of them (argentina and colombia and chile actually are pretty well off when it comes to gdp/per capita).

Just look at New York City flag, it basically pays homage ro the Dutch Prince flag same goes for the flags of Manhattan and the Bronx *which is even closer to the Prince flag with the boroughs symbol in the middle. Oddly when my home town changed from Matawan Twp. to Aberdeen Twp. Some city in Scotland sent them a Scottish flag, and they flew it, not sure about now.

I was born in New York, and moved to Aberdeen Township which is also and was called Matawan twp. till the 70's. There are roads around the area which have dutch names being a part of New Netherlands. In the northern part of New Jersey, in some communities and declining there is still dutch ancestors, and some in the hills in the northern part of the state till the 60's or early 70's there was a community of mixed Indian, Dutch and freed black slaves that spoke Jersey dutch.

Also it's cool to point out there was an ethnic Dutch/Batavinized European population in New Jersey and New York long after the capitulation, which you could equate to the Afrikaner Boers, that lasted well into the mid-19th century, there being an estimated 80,000-90,000 of them around the time of the first 1790 census, all while speaking Dutch seven or eight generations after the first settlers arrived, one of these people being President Maarten Van Buren. My own surname apparently comes from a settler of Frisian origin named Andries, anglicized to Anderson, and my great grandmothers name comes from a Pomeranian refugee from the Thirty Years War to the Dutch Republic named Von Ketel, thence to Nieuw Nederland, where the family name was Batavinized to Ketelhuyn, and then again Anglicized to Kittle. It's such a shame that we lost so much fascinating and valuable culture, both European and Indigenous, to such aggressive English language chauvinism over the course of two centuries. How amazing it would be today if there was a segment of the population in North America today that still spoke "Amerikaans" like the Boers speaking Afrikaans.

fun fact the Bronx area got its name from a Swedish immigrant (I think he was navy captain) who arrived in New Amsterdam in 1639. His name was Jonas Jonsson Brunk and I suppose he had served with the Dutch and wanted to retire. So he bought up a bunch of land form dutch and the natives. Eventuelly thay all calld it ”Bronx land”

A wonderful video Hilbert. However, Nieuw Nederland also included New Jersey and bits of other current states. I'm a real Yankee [i.e. New Englander] and that is supposedly a Dutch word, possibly derived from the name Jan Kees. I lived in Albany and saw quite a few buildings of Dutch style, and place names from the Dutch. My landlord at one time was named Rick van Winkel and there was an old Dutch graveyard in Jersey City near Journal Square. Thanks for this delightful excursion, I look forward to many more.

Dutch influence was huge. Van Buren was an American President and English was his second language. Presidents Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt were huge influences in the US and they were Dutch ancestry. Roosevelt: Field of Roses in Dutch

My grandfather has been heavily involved in the restoration and running of Landguard Fort in Felixstowe, Suffolk, which for much of history protected the port of Harwich, which was one of the few deep water ports on the east coast of England. One of stories he always tells me is of the Dutch invasion there in 1667. The story of the battle is actually very interesting, but it's a long one. (I'd be very interesting in seeing you take that on: with your interest in Dutch history, it might make a good video). But, the upshot is that some have suggested that if the Dutch had managed to capture Harwich, it would have been such a serious blow to the English economy and naval ability that they would have done anything to get it back, including returning New York.

I live in Northern New Jersey, about 10 mins from New York City, and Dutch place names are still very prevalent even in New Jersey. In fact, Dutch names are big in New York all the way up to around Albany.

Just a note, the population surge wasn't really a result of what Stuyvesant did. It was more a result of increased trade in the region and also a pamphlet written by Adriaen Van derDonck (a lawyer living in New Amsterdam) called Remonstrance of New Netherland led many people to immigrate because his descriptions of the colony in the pamphlet. If you're wondering why the pamphlet was titled that it was because Van der Donck was opposed to the West India Company owning the colony and wanted the Dutch government to take control of it.

In Colin Woodward's book, American Nations: A History of the 11 Rival Regional Cultures of North America. He postulates that the culture of New York City and the surrounding counties are still influenced by the Dutch founding the city as a trading center. The "New Netherland" region as he named it, is more focused on capitalism, liberalism, and religious tolerance compared to the other regions.

New York and Albany are named after the same guy! That's right, the future James II was the Duke of York and Albany back then. The reason for him having both titles is interesting. You may know that the English King's second-oldest son has often received the title Duke of York (Prince Andrew being the most recent example), and James was the second-oldest son of Charles I. But Charles I was also King of Scotland, and Duke of Albany was a similar title given to the Scottish King's second-oldest son.

Right now I’m reading “Protestantism and Patriotism” by Steven Pincus, which covers the first two Anglo-Dutch wars. Suffice to say he makes a very convincing argument that they were ideological rather than economic conflicts. The wars actually hurt the English merchant community and were undertaken in spite of their protestations. Then what were they fought for? The first war was instigated by apocalyptic Protestant republicans who sought to crush Dutch Orangism, which was linked to the House of Stuart and thus threatened the security of the Commonwealth. Hence the peace treaty that ended the war included the Act of Seclusion, which prohibited the young Prince of Orange from ever becoming Stadholder. It’s truly ironic that William of Orange ended up as the great Protestant hero; when in the 1650s the Cromwellians hated him and did everything they could to keep him from power. The second war saw a complete ideological reversal from the first. The Restored English monarchy opposed the republican regime of Johan de Witt and sought to advance the interests of the House of Orange in the Netherlands. In other words, England and the Dutch had switched places in the struggle between republic and monarchy. Leaders of the Cromwellian regime during the first war like Algernon Syndney, who was exiled after the Restoration, accordingly switched sides and supported the Dutch in the second war.

Such as the concept of Santa Claus, the words cookie, cole slaw and others. As well as several other place names outside of NYC: Yonkers, Hoboken, Kinderhook, etc.

Suriname did not yet get independence in 1954, but I think it was 1975. There is a lot more to tell about Nieuw Amsterdam. But really we should not forget two things in context. 1) It never was profitable. 2) The winters were horrific on the whole northern hemisphere (little ice age happening). So, in Dutch eyes, New Amsterdam was a non-starter. It was not a big price to pay for Surinam.

Fun fact: New Netherland colony was bartered with a Roon Island in Mollucas (world main spice producer), and now while new York was a metropolis, a roon island was underdeveloped, spice production there, altough still exist to the present, but its quantity Its nowhere near at it was in Colonial Period

most dutchies americanised their names. all of the Vander-something names are dutch. those whom you may know as 'yankees' are the ones called Jan or Kees , the 2 most common Dutch names. It’s actually insane how they don’t know what he did for our country during WW2. Churchill was as everyone else not perfect but he did great things.
