Hi Logan, both sets of my Grandparent's are gone. It makes me smile that I see yours working in the greenhouse and looking happy. Treasure them buddy. 😊

Your dad is a smart man. This year I got some tomato seeds from Baker Creek that were infected with something. I know this because I sanitized all my equipment. I even restarted all the tomatoes and separated them by variety and found the infected seeds. I lost 500 tomato plants. I was quite upset at the seed company.

Thank you for updating us on the onions. I grow a bunch in a seed tray myself and hold the seedlings in there until planting. I'm curious to know what fertilizer you use to keep onion seedlings at their healthiest until they go into the field.

Small backyard hot pepper grower here. From what I understand, the nightshade family is prone to disease. That's why I don't throw my old tomato or pepper plants in my compost bin. Thanks for another great video.

And the coating on the seeds is typically a fungicide so they don't rot during storage or when they r first planted. Sometime, some companies will also add an insecticide to protect them as well but that is typically for when u r planting directly to the ground

My onion seeds were almost a complete failure last year. 30 percent, maybe. I got red onions off the seed rack at the store this year and went about 75 out of 128 on them. I'm over 100/128 on White Sweet Spanish planted 3/15. Those seeds were from Hazzard's in Michigan.

I must admit, first time I've heard about sanitized tomato seeds. I've heard about disease being in the soil. Not sure if that's actually a thing, but I've heard it before. We use to own a tomato farm, I'll have to ask an elder, above my pay grade. Another great video.

Personally, I had the same issue this year. White onions grew great last year so I used the same seed this year, and my germination was about 20%. Grab a new pack of the same seed from this year and had about a 90 to 95% germination. My guess is that the onion seed need a very cool place to store to keep them happy during storage.
@jandawood1234 Жыл бұрын
I had two year old Spanish onion seeds that did not germinate well. I ended up getting some fresh seeds and they germinated right away. I read that allium seeds lose about 50 percent germination each year. For example, 50 the first year, 75 the second year and 87.5 on the third year

@rickthelian2215 Жыл бұрын
Oh no not the onions, they call them onion sets😊 Great idea by your dad for back up. One year old seeds shouldn’t be an issue if they where originally sealed, if open yes risky in storage due to conditions. I think you shouldn’t risk a whole planting with older seeds a few trays okay.😢

Yes, it's a rip off buying that in small bags, I made that mistake just once. I bought the 3 cubic feet bag at a nursery, going on my 2nd year using it, the bag was 80 dollars, that's Hawaii.

Logan, I have seen your progress last season for sanitation but still question it. You guys are giving great quality. However, no other farmer, greenhouse, or anyone does the crazy extra effort you all do. Again, seeing this extra mile is not worth it. Please reconsider because weather & soil is causing diseases. Your wasting time and effort. Cheers great channel
