I know this was released quite awhile ago, though I have to give a small critique. You told us more about what the game was instead of giving information about what happened to it which you left only for the very end. Most people whom click your video will probably know what spore is, they're most likely looking for a more in depth look at Spores downfall over the years then an explanation of the game. This isn't to say the explanation was bad, but rather it could of used improvement and made simplified.
@notalaeyt7847 жыл бұрын
What happened to it?, that's a stupid question tho. it's still there, nothing happened to it, it's still on steam.
@MissyMona7 жыл бұрын
It's not a stupid question because the question wasn't about Spore alone, it was about the spore brand. It disappeared from the face of the earth, the video is meant to explain what happened to it' as a whole. If Nintendo stopped making Mario games and a video titled. "What happened to Mario" was released I'd imagine it would be self explanatory, everyone knows the old games didn't suddenly vanish.

I'd like to introduce you to "Tu Quoque" It's a logical fallacy where instead of engaging with criticism you attempt to turn that criticism back on the person giving it. It's flawed because it implies that to give a critique you have to have experience in the field, when in reality you are just as much allowed to give constructive criticism. Mostly because as a consumer your critique can impact and help to improve a creator's content, you are after all their audience. So, regardless as to if I could or couldn't do better then the creator of the content, I can say with certainty that if someone was trying to help me improve that I'd take it graciously.

A Breakdown Of Spore Through The Stages; Cell Stage - Basically just Feeding Frenzy. Creature Stage - Conquer everyone through battle or just show them your sweet dance moves. Tribal Stage - Some other animals are getting smart like you, this won't stand. Kill them or befriend them into extinction, it doesn't matter which path you choose, both end with extinction. Civilisation Stage - Wage war against your own kind over resources you'll all eventually end up sharing anyway. Space Stage - Fight Grox and babysit literally every planet under your control because apparently you are the only competent member of your entire species. Do this until you get bored of the game.

Coming from some guy, who when he was a kid, all his computer could play was Spore at low settings. I played the living shit out of this game, found the secrets and little exploits here and there...but when I found the Spore GDC footage, I just felt cheated. That version I saw playtested with a commentary by the developers, looks so much better than this garbage we got handed. *For instance:* In the original demo/version of Spore that was initially created AND designed to be the definitive edition of Spore wayyyy back in 2004-2006, they had analysed animal body movement patterns and integrated some of their own patterns into the game engine. *What does that mean for gameplay?* Well, it means you can design a three legged animal, that would move and behave realistically like a three legged animal. The Cell Stage was also expanded, it wasn't just simple veggies and meat, (that doesn't make any fucking sense even if you ARE A CHILD, science teaches you that cells don't eat veggies and fucking pieces of meat in the sea) you had different variations of microbes/organism that could hunt you and WERE more powerful than you, so you had to runaway or hide/evade. They would also mutate and change with you, as your cell evolved. You would also reproduce realistically like a multi-cellular organism, rather than *in 2008 EA Spore* you squiggle into them and a egg pops out. *The Water Stage* The guy in this video is right. What happened to that? There was no point in cutting it, that would of been the coolest stage in my opinion. Huge leviathans, pack hunters like Dolphins and big predators such as shark-like creatures, again all creatures had realistic behaviour and movement or AI intelligence. I don't see why they cut that, because being me at 8 years old I even questioned it back then, all those years ago. A body that is flat with legs coming out of the water suddenly to colonise? Okay. At least in the *GDC version of Spore* it made a little more sense. This game was good, don't get me wrong. BUT, it could have been better and made more money if they simply went for the realistic route! I don't even have to tell you that kids literally were not interested in this game back in 2008, back then oh COD and Halo were all the rage! If they had gone the realistic route/scientifically accurate route they would of made a lot more money, and as such a more fulfilling game. Don't believe me? Okay, here you go: *GTA 5, The Last of Us, Dark Souls, Moonbase Alpha, etc etc* Furthermore, I would love to contact the developers and I have tried! The reason being is that I want obtain a copy or a demo copy of the original *2005 GDC Spore*. To me, that would be enough of a game even with shit graphics and a resolution of 480p. For fucksake EA, you ruin games! I want the Original *GDC* spore to be released! Like or reply to this comment if you feel the same, LE out. The edit was for a change in my YT name.

As a gamedev student, there is one important thing about game development that I feel not enough people understand. Gamedev is FUCKING HARD! Spore is such a huge and complex game finishing it exactly as intended, with realistic creature movement, the aquatic stage and each stage having overall more complexity would be insanity. There is so much that can go wrong at any point, whether that be some art assets not getting finished on schedule, endless bugs that could at any point destroy the inteded experience, keeping all the different mechanics in balance and the urge to add even more elements to the game and so on. The aquatic stage while interesting in theory must have taken more time and effort than the team had to make a product that was worthy of shipment. Even with a great publisher it would still be hella difficult to get it done. The team must have decided that aquatic was the least necessary stage for the overall function and experience of the game as a whole. Managing realistic movement for infinite custom creatures that consistently work would also be extremely difficult to get right without a thousand bugs breaking the game in unique unfun ways. I know first-hand the disappointment of not getting in important parts of the game concept. From small student team to huge AAA releases, it is extremely easy for devs to overscope, and if the stuff that doesn't work isn't cut fast enough, the time loss on those elements will ripple through the rest of the game like a cancer cell. At the end of the day, a game eventually needs to wrap up its development and ship. If not, you're simply not gonna have a game that people can play, and if it can't be played everything will be a waste.
@LiptonTeaGodly4 жыл бұрын
@@arikaaa69 Responding to a three year old comment...but ok! Mate, 4-5 years of game dev is more than enough time to implement the features I listed, better cell stage & water stage. Have you EVEN watched the GDC spore video? They had it literally finished seeing as they could RUN A DEMONSTRATION IN REAL TIME. I'll tell you what happened : EA intervened in the development process several times and continually set new deadlines as is now their standard for games in 2010+. But ya know disregard the 80+ likes that agree with me and totally don't watch the GDC video to understand my perspective... **>You sound more like a frustrated Indie developer**

the problem was that spore was a billion kilometers wide but a centimeter deep. spore is a very good game but it could have been so much more. to explain further there were two main "groups" during the creation of the game one favoring a "cute" shallow approach and the other side for a more deep scientific experience, there was not only the aquatic stage cut but also a few other stages to appeal to a more casual audience there was a long statement by will wright going into more detail. there was multiple stages cut and these were not promises that were not filled like in the case of no mans sky these were things that was in the game but got cut out to appeal to a more general audience *again let me say i do really like spore... but it just makes me sad how they cut so much content.*
@TheSandboxSocial8 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more! I was excited by the idea of the game and it's potential and I had some fun playing it when it came out, however you can tell how shallow the game play was, the space stage was the most fleshed out and interactive but it really took away from the game as a whole and it's progression.

The Sandbox Social totally agree. Each stage does need loads more to do. Also make the planet more detailed. Maybe snowy areas, dense forests, beachs and such. The map in the first game was bland. The galactic adventures extension is the best imo. You can create planets, adventures, and can make creatures pretty much as complicated as you want. It is a little limited though, but games have the potential to be much more complex now so I hope a better more realistic adaptation of Spore with more possibilities will come in the near future. Spore is an awesome concept, but a little simple.

Legend says Thrive is actually being worked on. Thrive is basically Spore Origins, aka Cell Stage. It doesn't look like they are even done with the cell stage. Anyways, it's latest update was a new GUI look. They pretty much need a giant dev team and a TON of funds to achieve their vision.
@dudecool79157 жыл бұрын
Sockman ! No, they're doing all the 'stages' that were in spore and more than that.
@PadsterX7 жыл бұрын
@berserker3247 no, they probably won't finish anything other than their first stage because they have not enough people to work with and no real funding either.

True, they may not have enough, but if they do get a bigger team and because they're "hiring" they will eventually do all stages.

I gave you a dislike but I'll let you know why because I liked a lot of how you presented your video. Finding royalty-free background music can be a challenge. I found your selection distracted from the message of the video. I feel like you touched on most of the concerns, but at 6 minutes I felt that you could have gotten more deeply into your findings. Make a longer video and really get stuck into a rhythm. I know that I was excited about the game, as were many of my friends. We all deeply enjoyed the creature creation stage of the game but each subsequent part of the game felt radically different from the last, and some of those game modes were not fun. I would have liked you to dig your teeth into how the stages of the game really felt like different games. Your intro was short, compelling and told me what to expect from you. Great! One large thing which you didn't address at all was how successful the beta was. Was it a beta? Maybe it was a trial. It was basically just the first two stages of the game, and for many people, those two were the best parts of the game. We spent hours in there making all manner of whacky and wonderful creatures. when the game finally released, there was nothing compelling for us beyond those stages. Also, there were no improvements to the creature creator! People were hopeful and expectant that it would mature and let us create less-cartoony things, but that wasn't the case at all. The game stagnated and wasn't a good experience. And lastly, you didn't address the ending of the game. Once you got to the centre of the galaxy, it was essentially game over as that was the win condition. It felt bad and was on the level of the ending of No Man's Sky. There was no satisfaction.

What I do on Spore: - Open Spore - Do the story once - Create many risible monsters in the editor for several months - Discover asymmetry - Create many more risible monsters in the editor for several months - Discover mods - Create many more more, ... well, you got the idea This is why I have around 140 hours on Spore, taking it into my top 10 most played games Why did EA shut the servers down? I remember being SOOOOOO hyped for this game back in 2008, and I used to play it a lot. The idea of creating your own creatures and evolving them, determining whether they were carnivores, omnivores, or herbivores, and played you reached the Space Stage definitely played into my interest.

I still play spore on occasion. Thankfully I binded the game to my original ea account before origins took control which allows me to get access to online. To bad it seems like no one else is making content. If there was a game that needs a true remake (not darkspore ew) then it would be this game.

Yeah but like all legendary games. The publishers are scared of fucking it up again, or entirely. Take hl3, l4d3, or portal 3 for instance. Valve wants to get the best way to end the franchise and link all games together, but no one wants to do it, because they are either too scared of fucking it up, or because their “work on any game you want” policy. But for ea, they only care about money, and making a spore2 is hard for them, because they felt the series was a waste of money because they fucked it up so hard. But blamed maxis for it, which led to them shutting maxis down. Now ea has no one to blame if the game goes downhill, so they try to forget of its existsnce

They should make spore 2 basically a bunch of games into one. Cell Stage = Thrive Creature Stage = Something I haven't thought of Tribal Stage = Something I haven't thought of Civilization Stage = Civilization V (Or maybe VI) Space Stage = Avorion (Could be No Man's Sky but they screwed that up a large amount)

It's still probably my personal favorite game, it has an active player base and even got an update recently which might mean some more changes are coming - after nine years! It also has the right amount of freedom and restrictions to inspire creativity. Oh, and the fact that you can pay your allies to conquer other allies of yours without them declaring war on you is just great.

I was just a kid in 2008, so i didn't know anything about Spore's development. I once went to a friend's house, and she let me play a game where you could create your own creature. It was Spore Creature Creator. I had no idea of what this was, but i had a lot of fun creating my own monsters, and i wanted to play the game every time i went to her house. Some time passes, and my dad comes home with a game: it was Spore. I was really happy, i was going to create all the creatures i wanted! Then i installed the game. It wasn't just a creature creator, it was a full game, where you had to create an entire civilization starting from the cell stage. My mind was blown, i had never seen such a huge game, i realized that the creature creator was just a tiny part of something much bigger. I have no idea of how many hours i spent into that game, but i played it for years. I'm glad i didn't know anything about the game before i played, and that at the time i was just a kid. Made me appreciate the game more. I now can see how some people may find it disappointing (and i still crave for a real sequel), but it will forever have a place in my heart

I feel like one of the few people who still plays Spore. I love the freedom of creation, how much you can change, and all these different things you can mold around, and the expansion packs, Creepy & Cute and Galactic Adventures make the game feel even more involved. You have more freedom in the creator, and you can make your own storylines for adventures and create some great levels. Spore is awesome. Too few people know about it.

The part I liked about the game is the fact that all of the content (the creatures, buildings, vehicles) that you see were created by someone somewhere. Everything that you created became part of the universe library.

I absolutely loved Spore, in fact I bought the game without even checking the requirements and couldn't play for months until I upgraded my computer and that single event is what spurred me to start learning about computers and PC gaming. Spore literally started me down the path of becoming an IT professional which I am today. Very weird how simple things like wanting to play a game you spent 30 dollars of allowance on (and that you got hyped up reading about in game magazines) end up driving you towards a career. I got all the expansions, still have the CDs and everything. I have very fond memories playing the game.

It's kind of funny in a way how when Spore was first released there was so much hate for it that it probably caused Will Wright to quit Maxis and stop making video games. Yet, now everyone seems to love Spore so much that they want a Spore 2. P.S. I do play Spore every now and then about ever 6 month to a year (because I burnt myself out on the game five years ago after playing several hours in the space stage). My favorite stages are Cell, Animal, and Tribal.

I remember this game for being very underrated. The Galactic Adventures expansion is where the game really shines, actually. I spend hundreds of hours in making my own "adventures". Basically making the game like a 3rd person shooter with a storyline, many locations and different alien races. I loved to do that. Recently I tried to go back and see if anything changed. And it did, for the worse. When I was into making the creations, I always worked on high details. But with the latest patch from one year ago, the limit got less. In other words: I could not use my older creations anymore and the adventures were unplayable. So that was really sad to see, because of the effort and time I put into the creations.

According to the devs, the water stage was ultimately scrapped because of issues with the controls in a volumetric environment, and they couldn't think of a way to just make it different from the creature stage.

I played it a lot when I was a kid and as I kept playing, I noticed how much was missing from the game so I took it upon myself to install mods and look up the hidden editors to increase my creativity. I don't play the game as much as I create things because I find it much more entertaining. When Dark-Spore was released, I noticed you couldn't do much with the creatures but it sufficed with action which I'm still into today, although the games' servers are down now. I went right back to Spore and installed the Dark-Spore Parts Mod Pack and I couldn't be any more happy. Hopefully one day the servers will be brought back or maybe a remaster for PC or Console.

I like spore, I played it when it came out, and I still play it from time to time now. However, I have one idea that I think is a possible reason for the drop in content, attention, and more. I believe that the biggest problem with spore is that it's too dependent on the community. It loses the magic of discovering new things too fast, mostly in the creature and space stages. If you're connected to the Sporepedia and community too much, things start to get similar and repetitive. If you don't use it, the lack of creatures and races will show. Now, with the community (mostly) dead, many are forced to either, create a ton of creatures to fill their own universe or use the Maxis creations. I like the game, and mostly play to try and conquer the galaxy now, but the fact that I have to create many different creatures to fill up a galaxy to conquer really makes it feel like a chore. The game was good, and still is, but it can't keep the magic of discovery and wonder going throughout the experience.

It's 2018.. I won this game 15 times... It's my favourite game, but I feel like all the stages had a bit of repeating, in other words the stages really took a long time to finish and kept getting longer. I still love it.
