I definitely remember riding Castaway Kids! I was 11 in 1992 but also remember riding it years after that. It was such a relief to go in the cool cave, out of the hot, muggy St. Louis summers. The main memory that stands out were the kids on the plank being yanked all over by the bulldozer. And all of jungle sounds. Great memories. Thankful for that video being around.

If I remember correctly, Castaway Kids ended with the kids being rescued and catching some criminal that was loose in the jungle, and whom we had seen several times throughout the ride. He was also the one who crashed the plane we saw earlier. I'm not 100 percent sure that's how the ride ended, but I remember something like that towards the end of the ride. Again, not 100 percent sure because I am going off a 20 year old memory. I also remember there being a volcano facade in the station that would "erupt" every hour on the hour.

Oh interesting! That volcano effect kind of reminds me how grocery stores used to have thunderstorm sounds when the produce section would get watered. I love this! Thanks for your input. 😊

Great video! I was born in 1977 outside of St. Louis, so my entire childhood was all about this Six Flags, especially The Time Tunnel. I have such vivid memories of it, along with Legends Of The Dark Castle. Interesting Fact: The music that played during the queue line of The Time Tunnel was the title track to Van Halen's album "1984." The song is just about a minute long, and it has a distinct New Age feel to it, so they just looped it over and over while you waited in line. The Time Tunnel had dinosaurs, a wooly Mammoth (that blew a huge blast of cold air as you went by), an Abominable Snowman, animatronic pirates, and the end was an all outer space motif that bathed you in blacklight, model spaceships, and more New Age music. The last thing you saw before the exit was a huge screen where a film was playing in a loop. It was a Merlin looking guy calling himself the Universal Traveller Of Time, and he was saying that he just took you through eons. The Time Tunnel was everything to me when I was a kid. I wanted to ride it non-stop. Legends Of The Dark Castle didn't really have any differences between its scenes, it was just a trip through a medieval castle, with various scenes of dungeons, prisoners, and executioners. You could see that they repurposed a lot of stuff from The Time Tunnel. Of course, I was getting to be a teenager at that point, so it was always a great place to take a ride in the dark alone with a girl. I was really sad when Castaway Kids was taken down, because I could still ride that and remember the original rides that were there, as the ride still had the same track, boats, and musty smell. It was completely leveled for the new DC ride, which can be found at tons of other parks. Another Fun Fact: during Halloween time, The Time Tunnel was changed to The Tunnel Of Terror during Six Flags Fright Nights. It was a horror themed Dark Ride when Freddy, Jason and Leatherface were all the rage, and all 3 of them were in the ride, traumatizing all the kids that went by. I tell ya, the 80's were great!

To this day I still get kind of creeped out by Freddy Krueger. I attribute this very minor case of PTSD to many repeated trips throughout my childhood to 6 flags fright fest lol And 0 my god you brought up the smell of castaway kids! I love that! I think that musty smell may have quite possibly been my favorite part of the ride I know that sounds so weird but it's it's like gasoline it it's such a good smell but it's not a good smell but it's such a good smell. Now I'm all nostalgic like thinking of the old rides and one I have not heard spoken of for decades Tom's twister. whatever happened to Tom's twister? The one that goes so fast it sticks you up against the wall... that Tom's twister. Lol. That ride was so fun!!! as long as nobody puked. GOOD TIMES

I found this channel and immediately subscribed. Mid America should have never removed their boat ride when the other two original Six Flags parks found ways for the classic boat ride and the modern justice league to coexist. Imagine if Scooby Doo had stayed around and we had gotten a reimagined Time Tunnel once they dropped the IP. Yet another example of wasted potential at that park.

Thanks! Yeah, it would’ve been great to see Six Flags revisit an old version of the ride, kind of like Speelunker’s Cave in Texas. Justice League could’ve gone anywhere without sacrificing the boat ride. Oh well.

Storybook Amusement - ♥♥♥I want to thank you for creating this video. Back in the 80's, my brother and I went to 6 Flags over Mid-America in St. Louis. At that time, "The Time Machine" was the current version. This ride stuck with me, as it was something kids didn't really get to see or experience back then. My brother and I spent most of the day riding this over and over again. Later as an adult, I remember that small drop being like a huge water fall. It's funny to see how small that drop really was in your video. I searched the internet and youtube years ago for more footage, but people didn't have the video cameras back then, with the exception of a few families that had more wealth then the adverage. Only a few did, but they were so big and heavy, that most only had a camera. Also the reasons there are not many photos of the attraction, is because photos and film developing was expensive, so most limited what photos were taken, if any. Waking up and finding this video this morning really made my day. I forgot what the name was, until you said "The Time Machine", which also matched up with the year we went on a family vacation. I have created a lot of youtube videos and it's more work than most realize. The amount of time and research that you put into this video should be applauded. Thank you so much for all your hard work, and know that this video really touched a theme park lover like myself, who is now able to look back at some fond memories from younger years. Keep up the awesome work. I made sure to like and subscribe! Congrads on the continued success. Should you want or need feedback on other theme parks from years past and what things were really like from someone who worked in them, let me know, as I used to work as a Magician at Walt Disney World in the early '90s at the House of Magic on Main Street USA at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World, and was an original cast member in the night-time parade "SpectroMagic". Many people didn't know that a Magic Shop used to be in there. The awning is still there towards the end of Main Street in dark Green. It still says "The House of Magic", although, they have gutted it and it's now sadly only an extension of the Emporium shops. Although, it was in the magic shop in 1991 that I got to perform one-on-one for Michael Jackson when he was in the park! Other attractions and theme parks that I also used to perform as was, Universal Studios at "The Alfred Hitchcock Attraction" along with playing the role of Beetlejuice in "Beetlejuice Graveyard Review", the original version when Joey Fatone from NSYNC was in the show with me, along with Dancing on Norwegian Cruise Lines, Stilt Walking and acting at MGM Theme Park in Las Vegas in the late '90s, as well as working as an actor an old, yet famous year round haunted attraction called "Terror On Church Street" in Orlando Florida, which was around for 8 years (original attraction). Regardless, I love to support other KZbinrs and content creators!

Thanks for your comment! That's a great story. The drop shown earlier in the video is from a very similar boat ride at Six Flags Over Georgia, but the drop shown in the Scooby-Doo section would've been the same little drop you did as a kid. Wild how our imaginations make it all seem bigger as kids! I wish there were more images out there of Time Tunnel so you could relive some memories. That's quite the resume! I'll definitely keep that in mind. 😊 I really appreciate the kind words. Thanks so much for sharing. And thank you for watching.

At the end of Castaway Kids, the kids congratulate the riders for "helping them stop those machines" (the machines deforesting the jungle,) and they were all together in the last room, looking happy. The "bad guy" who was driving the machine, and who might have caused the plane crash, was all tied up in a vine nearby, held by the dog. That's about it.

I'm happy you are covering these rides, because man they are extremely rare. The Cave interested me because of how odd that one was. Which is ironic since I am Native American myself. Also, I wasn't too much of a fan of the chief you saw that opened his cloth. Not only because of his loud screams (which I can imagine are scary), but because the design itself is quite a negative portrayal of us. Which is a shame because the idea of a haunted figure opening its cloth to reveal a skeleton underneath is a cool idea; they just applied it in the wrong place. That and there was the cool skeleton canoe which I think they could have done differently. There are some bones of a good idea in that ride. But obviously, its a product of its time and in later years I can now see why not many people cover it. In fact, the Roblox guys and I considered turning a recreation of it into something else entirely. Since not only is the ride obscure, but I feel like Native culture in a dark ride would be interesting to explore and do it right. Mystery Lodge at Knott's is proof of doing our culture right.

I really appreciate hearing your perspective. I was incredibly hesitant to cover this ride because of how intense the portrayals were, especially some of the more violent scenes. There were moments in the ride that seemed cute on the surface. If you took out the harsh depictions and roles, it could've been a classic that people loved just as much as the other Six Flags dark rides. Mystery Lodge is a great example! That would be great to reimagine this ride in Roblox. Sounds like a fun project if it ever comes together! Thanks as always for watching. It's great to read your comments.

I would also like to see Native American mythology in a dark ride! I think that Cherokee mythology would make a wonderful ride! (Nite that I’m from TN, so, my local tribes are the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Muskogee, and Cherokee. I have heard several Cherokee myths from several different sources, including a Cherokee man. I am also familiar with Brer Rabbit and view his tales as part of my culture as a Southern person! Brer Rabbit was partially based on a Cherokee Rabbit Trickster)

Your dedication to diving into the histories of these rides will never cease to amaze me 🙌 The way Six Flags is able to repurpose these rides for new stories is quite impressive, and I wish that kind of creativity would return to the chain. Mind you, the Justice League rides are quite amazing, so I'm glad this space had a happy ending. I also gotta shout out the way you handled the problematic parts of this history. I think you talked about that in a very professional and informative manner, so well done. Keep up the amazing work!

The Castaway Kids were such a nostalgia trip for me. I used to ride that ride every time I went even as I got older. I have such fond memories of the ride, even in its dilapidated state. My favorite section was the bulldozer that would growl and the headlights would turn on unexpectedly (gave me a bit of a jump scare), and the swaying dock where the kids would tug on the rope to stop the bulldozer. I remember how disappointed I was when the rope was no longer attached and the dock didn't move anymore. When I found out they were replacing the ride, I absolutely hated it. I knew the ride was "bad" and in a deteriorated condition, but I was loathed to lose something from my childhood. I rode the new Scooby-Doo ride exactly once, and then never again. However, looking back on the ride (especially in this video), it was definitely time for the Castaway Kids to drift off into the sunset. Thanks for the memories, and looking into this ride.

The lines for that ride were horrifically long and several portions of the queue were outdoors and unshaded. Imagine the fun of making your kids stand in line for an hour for a kids ride. Also, 10:45 probably video cut out there because those heads coming out of the walls of the tunnel squirted people with water and there was a brief rapids/higher speed portion of the ride. Wouldnt want to get those big bulky expensive 90s camcorders wet.

Really interesting to see the history of the dark ride there. Went there during the scooby doo era. Have a distinct memory of bording that ride and shooting the gun and getting beat by my dad. Could ramble on about memories of that place. Lot of very cool history at six flags St. Louis from what I’ve been told by many in the area. Especially freinds of mine who worked on the park or are currently employed. Still remember it being changed to the dc ride and being really mad. It was a complete mess when it opened up as dc.

I used to go at least once every year throughout the late 80s to the early 00s. It has indeed gone downhill, mainly because the staff that they hire are surly, careless, and don't give a damn about the image or the hospitality that used to be so nice there. The food, always overpriced, was at least decent back in the day. Now, the food and snacks (other than First Cone) are really horrid, you have to wait in line for a VERY long time for them, and the staff serving it couldn't care less about making you feel happy to be there. It's just kind of miserable all around. But the rides are still awesome.

like many others in the comments I grew up with this park. i only experienced the scooby doo portion, and have very very fond memories of it. in hindsight, i am sure six flags was happy to get rid of the damned water. it is a classic part of the ride, yes, but i am sure it was a maintenance nightmare, and watching the last ride through, you could tell it was either heavily invest in fixing the broken parts, or start from scratch. it sucks, but being honest it was probably the better decision. Six Flags St Louis doesn't usually get a lot of love from the company, so the vibe is very 'held together by spite, spit, and duct tape'. The one and only time i went on justice league it broke down and honestly? mood. fits this park real well. if it still functions and the parts are available to replace we'll keep things running as long as we can.

Hi, St. Louis resident who can somewhat help with this. Well..... at least with Scooby Doo to Justice League. The situation with this switch was its generalized location. At a certain point, the area became a land called DC Universe with the Scooby Doo ride plopped right at the entrance to it. And, at least when I went, the ride had seen much better days. The blacklight paint was fading, some of the gun game elements just didn't work any more due to overuse. So since Sally Corp had made a Justice League themed ride for a few of the other Six Flags locations, it felt like a good fit.

That giant DC logo on the pathway near the ride looked pretty out of place. 😅 That's how a lot of these regional park rides end up. They get built, serve their purpose, and aren't really cared for. The maintenance issues build up, and the parks just move on. Thanks for watching!

I still miss the Scooby-Doo version. I have so many good childhood memories of it as a 2000s and 2010s kid who's from the St. Louis area. I've only ridden the Justice League one twice. (Once to try it, once with a friend.) Yeah, and if that first one stayed, it wouldn't exist today. It has not aged well.😬 Although the 70s were a different time, and I try not to hold people in the past to today's standards. I may have never ridden it because of my condition of being born like 25 years after it was torn out, but my parents remember it. And they understand why it wouldn't be here today, especially my mom, although they both really enjoyed it as kids. I still go there pretty regularly, and I'm looking forward to the new Joker: Carnival of Chaos coming for the 2024 season. (Although I wished it had a Britannia theme, but whatever. If it gets the park more money to stay open, so be it.) I hope it doesn't mean bad news for the Joker Inc. ride. It's so simple, but so fun. Now to finish this comment off, I'm going to pour one out for all the removed rides/attractions of my childhood at SFSTL. - Water Street Cab Company (Bumpercars): 1973 - 2012 Replaced by the Boomerang (Which I don't even care for that much.) - Scooby-Doo! Ghostblasters: The Mystery of the Scary Swamp: 2002 - 2014 Replaced by Justice League: Battle for Metropolis (I don't care for it that much. I'm not familiar with DC Comics either.) - Rush Street Flyer: 1987 - 2015 Replaced by Fireball (No thank you, I don't want to dangle upside down for seconds at a time.) - Tidal Wave: 1991 - 2019 Currently an empty lot used during Fright Fest (Hope a new coaster goes there) - Moon Antique Cars: 1971 - 2020 Massively shortened in 2007 for the Evil Knievel (now American Thunder,) removed for reasons I don't know in 2020. - Hook's Lagoon: 1999 - 2020 Replaced by Adventure Cove Anything removed before 2012, I only have very faint memories of, no memories at all, or I never went on it.

Should we have the injun joes cave, time tunnel, and dark castle audio on the lost media wiki?

As someone that road it many times, it's disappointing to see that there is nothing available on the web regarding "Legends of the Dark Castle." It was an awesome ride with a medieval horror setting and was very atmospheric. I'll never forget the killer sinister organ soundtrack it had playing in it.

That's interesting! Yeah it's hard to find people talking about it. Any memories? I suppose they turned it into Castaway Kids to be more kid-friendly than a spooky castle.

@@StorybookAmusement Well, I remember the storyline of the ride borrowed from Sauron's character in Tolkien's LOTR. The main villain of the ride was called the Black Knight, basically the story's "dark lord" as it were. He terrorized the land from his dark fortress, known as the "Dark Castle" with his demonic minions and instilled horror and loathing in everyone's heart. Then one day, the people he ruled over rose up and rebelled against him. A hero stepped forward and supposedly slayed him and his spirit was banished from the world. Time passed, and people thought he was gone for good, but his evil spirit crept back into the world, took form once again, and gathered all creatures of darkness to himself, taking over his dark fortress once more, and beginning a new bloody reign of terror. Of course, it was much more, horror/dark fantasy based than epic/high fantasy. One thing I particularly remember is a screaming decapitated head on a canopied bed, and also some medieval peddler killed by his own cart as it turned over on him, as well as the gigantic Black Knight himself, a monstrous executioner-like dude, an undead king and queen on their thrones, a view of the Dark Castle from what was meant to be the outside, a cave with bats hanging from the ceiling, and undead soldiers that served the Black Knight, if I remember correctly. There was lots of other stuff of course. All the characters were either animatronic or mannequin-like.

@@MrSentinel83 Sorry for the late reply, but this is some incredible detail! That sounds absolutely terrifying, and I can see why it lasted such a short time. As a ride type for families, that theme sounds really intense. Super interesting they did that! Thanks for sharing all this.

@@StorybookAmusement I was like 6 years old when I first rode it, and came out of it a bawling mess because it scared the living shit out of me, but as that day wore on, and I began really thinking about it, I found I really enjoyed that ride's dark and sinister atmosphere, and I went on it like three more times that day and another three when I came back a couple of years later. That ride would plant a seed in me that would later grow into a passionate love for dark fantasy/horror literature. If you really want to know what the atmosphere of the ride was like, read Clark Ashton Smith's "Averoigne Cycle." I wouldn't be surprised if the designer/makers of the ride were inspired by it. Just sinister medieval fantasy black magic and necromancy thick as hell in that ride, and it was genius. If I could find someone that did computer animation and music, I would love to do a video recreation of what I remember from that ride. I could do the voiceover work and describe how the ride was so they could properly recreate it. People need to see how great and atmospheric this ride was! Still can't believe the internet is completely devoid of anything about it; no pictures, no nothing!

@@MrSentinel83 I appreciate that recomendation! That awesome that this ride sparked a lifelong fascination. Some rides have a way of doing that! I would love to see a project like that unfold. I'm sure there are former team members out there who could provide some more insight about the details too. I'd usually go that route, but I didn't want to do a deep dive into this one as much.

Injun Joe is quite a derogative and demeaning archetype, but if you consider the fact the character was a half-breed, struggling to find his place in society as much as the true Native people were (and still are), he's more of a tragic character that documents the social condition of Native Americans in 19th century MidWest America. It's a shame that Mark Twain "villianized" Joe for the sake of glorifying his trademark character Tom Sawyer, who I can understand documents the new, naive outlook of White American settlers at the time.

This is an insightful way to put it. It's definitely more complex than just brushing it off. I somewhat regret how I handled this video and probably would've approached it differently today. Thank you for your comment and adding to the conversation!

Justice league was a huge downgrade from scooby doo. It’s like if someone tried to build the Spider-Man ride from universal on a $10 budget. It’s an empty ride with broken effects

Sad that the channel creator has to brush Injun Joe's Cave as offensive. Have Mark Twain's books been banned too? Because the characters used words that make the modern day SJWs lose their mind. 🙄

I understand it was a different time. Theme parks are meant for everyone; the use of slurs and negative depictions could be genuinely offensive to some. In hindsight, I laid it on thick in this video. But if you take a moment to look into the topic, you may learn the word and depictions are largely considered offensive. But thanks for your comment.
