This was one of the cottages built just for summer with no insulation for any usage in the colder months. It serves as a reminder of what Newport was in the days before the marble palace era. Great video.

I have been there, its a nice cozy cottage. It a large Cottage but due to the period of time the rooms are small adjoining rambling around the property. Noticeable amount of China trade antiques. Cute nice property.

My Aunt owned one of these in Pennsylvania, it was much smaller but beautiful. The porch was huge and it had a very ornate entry with heavy wood paneling. However as there were quite a few windows--it was not "dark". There was a separate stairway for servants. Hard to believe that we consider these as mansions or mansion-like, but they were vacation "bungalows" to people who had the means. Beautiful homes now, thanks for showing this one.

Don't pass this by when you're in Newport! Yes, it's wooden instead of stone - but it is lovely and cozy. The dining room, with its metallic tiles and Tiffany glass tiles is breathtaking.

Would love to see you dedicate and episode to the Pittock Mansion, Oregon's most famous and innovative French chateau mansion perched on a ridge of Portland's Forest Park. Built by The Oregonian newspaper founder, Henry Pittock, and saved from ruin in the mid '60's and open for tours. The one place I always take out of town guests and they're never disappointed. The majestic view of Mt. Hood and the city at your feet is alone worth the price of admission.

GOOD AFTERNOON - Yes, I was a Newport for a week on my honeymoon. I didn't want to leave. Saw all the mansions, and they had, at that time, the best seafood I ever had. This is one of those beauties in Newport. Thank you for all your creative works and time. May you have a wonderful HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! PS - do you have any history on President Kennedy when he and his family stayed there for the summers? Did they own a home there?

Program suggestion: One of my favorite houses, which I haven’t seen in 20 years, is Nelson House near Yorktown, Virginia. I first saw it around 1986 when stationed in Virginia Beach and fell in love with it. What a history, Revolutionary and Civil War. I believe it was built around 1711. Georgian architecture remains among my favorite…although as I write this just realizing Nelson House would pre-date George I, I believe, so must have my terminology mixed. Would it be simply Palladian? Now you must do a program, and save me the Google. I also remember a charming small brick house in Virginia Beach called Lynnhaven House, which I think was mid 18th century and unusual because it’s built of brick and actually architecturally interesting for a very small house in what was a relatively sparsely inhabited area at the time. Thanks for the great programs.

Kingscote, like Chateau Sur Mer, in Newport were the 2 mansions that stood out architecturally. These houses had character and style. The opulence of the castles on Bellevue Avenue, to me, paled in comparison to the ornate wood features throughout those mansions. The craftsmanship was extraordinary. Though grand, these two summer "cottages" also had a very warm, cozy and homey feeling. As an aside, Long Island, New York's "Gold Coast", in its heyday had over 300 estates on its North Shore. Shortsightedness deprived us of its history and architecture. A handful still exists. And even fewer of those can be toured. The Gould mansion, "Falaise", at Sands Point is one that remains. And an interesting artifact is on the property. Charles Lindbergh's station Wagon. Thanks for the excellent video.

I do love me a gothic arch. The glass block wall is terrific. So happy to see this one survived. I'm almost surprised it didn't burn down, as so many wooden structures of the age met that fate, between candles, oil lamps, and knob & tube wiring. The striped awning is everything.

There was quite an amazing house located in Elberon NJ, on Ocean Ave, called Aladdin's palace. It belonged to Mary Guggenheim, who was forced out of the home for back taxes, and the house was subsequently leveled circa 1940. This is a place I hope you'll be able to look into, and do a video. Love your channel.

@Eduardo Morales I think this name may have been applied to a number of very large and ornate houses. I wish I could attach a photo of the house I'm making reference to. It was on Ocean Ave in Elberon, NJ. It stood among a large number of lavish summer residences built near the ocean.

I'M 49 years old now and back in the 80s and early 90s it was a spectacular scene to go to Ocean Ave, they were building new ones as well as remodeling the olds ones. Alot of Miami Vice, type mansions and it was even a rumor that the Piano Mansion belong to Billy Joel.

I only just visited Kingscote a few weeks ago while visiting a friend in Boston (I live in Texas so it’s always exciting to see older homes back east). Almost didn’t, went to see The Breakers and wanted to see Marble House and a few others of the grander, but they were closed due to filming of a series called “Gilded Age”. When purchasing tickets the rep mentioned Kingscote and that it is one of the oldest, so I knew I wanted to see it. The Breakers is like being in a museum or courthouse, beyond my imagination to live in something like that, but I could relate to Kingscote and actually imagine living in that house. It’s an absolute must see, very glad it survives. I found out the last of the King family living there, Mrs. Armstrong, challenged city planners in the 1960s and prevented the house from being demolished. If I remember, one of the later architects was involved in designing the magnificent Boston Public Library.
@bhobbs3284
@bhobbs3284 5 ай бұрын
The (old) Boston Public Library was designed by McKim, Mead and White. Although it was based on a building (museum? Library? I forget -- did my research 40 years ago) in Italy it was a bit revolutionary for libraries of the day. Stanford White designed the dining room of Kingscote. It was an early use of cork for sound deadening.
