@@firefoxriouyh6541 Also, 3m units sold in just a quarter of a year isn't average at all-- it's actually excellent. Most game developers will never see this level of commercial success in their entire careers-- especially indie devs. The game costs $60; I don't think you'd ever complain about making ~$180m in a matter of months, would you? Try not to derive your sense of the "average" from the sales of borderline ubiquitous juggernauts like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Minecraft and GTA V. 3m units sold is much more than the vast majority of video games and albums.

I grew up with the NES. My first Zelda was the original. I’ve enjoyed EVERY release for the most part. Not a fan of the DS titles or Oracle games. I did enjoy BOTW quite a bit. There’s some glaring omissions to what makes Zelda such a great franchise. But I did like it overall. There’s just something about TOTK that I did not enjoy. Mainly the crafting. But there’s more to it. It felt super tedious to get anything done. Exploring was fun and mostly enjoyable. But it grew stale way quickly because it was similar to BOTW. I poured so many hours in BOTW, so TOTK just got boring after a while. So, with the tedious mechanics. The world exploration being similar to something I put over a hundred hours in already, and the continued fractured story telling….I just can’t place TOTK as a great “Zelda” game. I completely understand that I’m not into crafting games. And that plays a huge part. But the overall experience did not give me that same excitement as playing Ocarina in middle school, beating Windwaker, or playing BOTW for the first time. From the start, TOTK irritated me with its game mechanics.

I don't think I've ever commented on one of your videos but I need to point out something. It took BOTW 5 years to get 20 million sales. It took TOTK to hit that same 20 million in just ONE YEAR and it was more expensive. Let's give TOTK 7 years and then we can compare them fairly. Something else to consider is that some people don't buy the 2nd installment of a game until they beat the first and it took me 7 years to beat BOTW. And yes if TOTK was 29 dollars cheaper on the E Shop it would help sales. Regardless TOTK is selling way way faster than BOTW. My second statement is that both of these Switch 900p games are not like the 1080p Zelda games Nintendo made a decade ago so if they patch it to 4k OR IF THEY RE-RELEASE IT then TOTK might sell 30 million a couple of years faster than BOTW. He had some valid points. BOTW was a HUGE reason to even purchase a Switch around launch. It’s also a very divisive game. You either enjoy the game and consider it a proper evolution to the Zelda series. Or you hate the direction they went with because the fractured storytelling, lack of classic items, lack of proper dungeons, and lack of enemy variety. Let’s just say that 0.25% of the people who bought BOTW did not care for it. That’s less sales already. Plus, there’s people who played BOTW, but possibly moved on from gaming. We also potentially have those people who became bored with the Switch and sold it 3 or 4 years ago. Flip side. There’s new adopters and people who were genuinely hyped enough to make this their first experience. I actually considered returning the game after the first few days. I absolutely hated the game. The crafting just isn’t my thing. I’m sure I’m not the only one with that opinion. I’ve actually talked people out of buying it based on what I disliked about it.

Me personally, I think the only thing that held TOTK back from being the greatest game of our generation was the story. The whole world and the sidequests were masterfully and beautifully designed, but the main story itself really lacked. There were times when I first bought the game where I literally groaned playing it because I knew I needed to finish the story to be able to feel like I was progressing in the game, but the story sucked so bad. A week in, I literally had to put it down for a day and do something else in order to regain the wherewithal for the story.

People got caught up in the novelty for BotW are are already sick of open World Zelda. They want classic 3D Zelda back. Open World fans are extremely vocal, but they do not represent all of us. When I played BotW, I was really positive on it during the first few hours, but over tome, things began to grate on me. Sidequests are obtuse and lack proper tracking and guidance, the open areaacks interesting thongs to do and just feels like busywork. The lack of structire makes for terrible stories, horrendous puzzles, and lack of design. I won't call it lazy, because it isn't. But too much openness makes for shallow experiences. Do people forget how little the old 3d Zelda's sold? lol. If anything the open world Zelda games share more in common with the original NES Zelda because that's literally where the inspiration from the game came from. The director wanted you to have the same type of freedom you did in the original. I think they could keep that type of freedom but make it more similar to the old 3d Zelda's but that'd probably require a bigger dev team
@Vigilanteblade

Furthermore, sales do not equate to objective quality. Furthermore, it doesn't invalidate the argument that people are progressively getting sick of open world design. BotW benefited from novelty. I don't think that's the case. The problem is a lack of refinement of the open world gameplay and reusing the map. I mean, what would you think if you took your favorite Zelda 3D game and Nintendo said they were making a sequel but reusing the map that you already explored? It was an obvious major fubar on Nintendo's part. Exploration is THE biggest draw of any Zelda game, 2D or 3D.

I prefer the traditional Zelda formula with complex dungeons and weapons that you can continue to use. I realize people wanted things changed up but making everything tedious like making food all the time and weapons that break after using them 7 or 8 times breaks the flow of the experience for me. Trying to 100% everything is a complete waste of time and doesn’t feel rewarding. BoTW was monumental. It was a trendsetter, revolutionized open world game design, totally reinvented Zelda, and launched with the uber-successful Switch - which onto itself had an immense amount of hype behind it. ToTK is the superior game in most ways. But it was never going to be as impactful as BoTW because you simply can't recreate that unique set of circumstances. We're talking about a sequel on the same hardware versus the excitment of not only a new, totally different Zelda, but also the first ever hybrid console. Not to mentiom Wii U sales. This whole "what happened to ToTK" narrative is so annoying and exhausting and feels like it's just for clicks. Like we're really comparing sales of 7 year old game to a *1 year old game?* Be so serious lol Nothing "happened." The game was a critical darling and sold like hot cakes. Actually the legend of zelda: echoes of wisdom, is coming out on September 27 (I think)

Dude, once I realised it was a Zelda crafting game AND the same map was used, I lost all interest. There was nothing 'new' here for me at all. Looking forward to Echoes of Wisdom so much, top down Zelda is where it's at unless Ninty wants to remake OoT for me?

IMO Tears Of The Kingdom is a far better game in every way than Breath Of The Wild. I mean in Tears you can do so much more, and the world/environments are much larger, theres just so much more to do and so much more going on.

I think it's technically better if you made a checklist of what each has, but that doesn't always translate to better. For me, TotK missed on too many of its additions with regards to being fun and also carried over the unfun aspects of BotW that were easy to overlook for such a novel game but not so much in the sequel.

I hope Echoes of Wisdom does really well amidst the news Tears of the Kingdom is seeing a shrinkdown of sales. There was a real fear for a while that Nintendo would only be doing BOTW-likes from now on. A lot of fans, myself included, didn't want to see Zelda be permanently trapped in the "open-world" model.

This isnt new.... Usually this happens with more than one main line zelda game on a system.... Look at ocarina of time vs Majoras mask... This isnt a bold take or a miraculous prediction. This happens every time, another example is Twilight princess to skyward sword.

TOTK is such a good game. Might be the best Nintendo game ever made

You are wrong about one thing. My buddy Tony did not like BotW, but said TotK was one of the best games he's ever played.

How could totk be the most expensive ?! They re-used 90% of the map and the parts of the sky and underground were so repetitive that it couldn't have been more then 25% of the development🤔
